B48A20M0 is a gasoline engine from the German automobile company BMW, which is characterized by two liters of working volume. Thanks to the installation of an additional blower in the cylinders, which is organized in the form of a turbine, it was possible to achieve a maximum power of 192 horsepower. This power unit was developed and manufactured specifically for installation on the X1 from the Bavarian company BMW. The first car with this engine under the hood came off the assembly line in the second half of 2015.

Distinctive features

The B48A20M0 motors bear some resemblance to their B38 predecessors, which differed only in having three cylinders. The common features were that these engines came with the features provided by BMW EfficientDynamics technology.

This technology involved blowing additional air into the powertrain fuel mixture using a Twin Scroll turbine. This is a version of the turbine with two exhaust ducts. This solution maximizes the efficiency of the supercharger.

These engines also utilize the Valvetronic system. This system has been used to provide maximum power with a relatively small engine displacement. First of all, it aims to change the valve travel depending on the speed at which the crankshaft of the power unit is rotating.

The Double VANOS system is used to change the camshaft timing, allowing the valves to be synchronized by changing the position of the camshafts. The unit for this system is located between the chain drive gear and the camshaft.

Fuel injection on the power units is direct, and is organized with the help of High Precision Injection technology. This system provides for the presence of a central multi-tooth injector, which makes it possible to work normally paired with an additional supercharger.

The B48A20M0 motors are characterized by providing greater efficiency than previous similar power units. They are also more robust than their H-series predecessors. There are no exact figures and data regarding how much these motors actually run. Not much time has passed since the beginning of their production, so motorists just have to guess and hope for passport data.

B48A20M0 engines, as well as their three-cylinder counterparts, can be installed not only longitudinally, but also transversely. This significantly expands the possibilities for manufacturing new car models, as well as the use of such motors as a swap into older modifications.

Features

The whole line of B48 power units from the Germans provides for an in-line arrangement of four cylinders, as well as accompanying the gasoline-powered motors with a turbine. This is a new generation of motors, the blocks of which were completely made of aluminum alloy. The development and assembly of these motors was aimed at displacing the outdated engines of the N20 model range from the assembly line.

The power units use cylinders with a diameter of 82 millimeters. There are four valves on each cylinder. Since the motor is a four-cylinder engine, it has a total of 16 valves. These valves are driven by a pair of camshafts. This system allows for a compression ratio of 11:1.

The engine is capable of developing a maximum output of 192 horsepower. At the same time, this performance is achieved at 6000 rpm. The maximum torque reaches 280 Nm. This torque can be obtained between 4 and 6 thousand revolutions per minute.

Normal performance of the power unit is ensured only when filling with 95 gasoline. Average fuel consumption in a mixed driving cycle is about 6 liters per hundred kilometers. In case of aggressive driving or driving on poor road surface, fuel consumption may slightly increase.

The engine is equipped with a start-stop system. This has a positive effect on fuel consumption and significantly reduces harmful emissions into the atmosphere. For each kilometer traveled, only 146 grams of carbon dioxide are emitted. The work of the system is perfected at a high level, so there is no discomfort while driving, and the power unit responds adequately to the accelerator pedal.

Motors do not burn oil and do not cause their owners much trouble, and also have a fairly long service life. Only to achieve such indicators it is necessary to choose oil and gasoline very carefully. The lubricating fluid should be changed after every 5-8 thousand kilometers of mileage.

This engine is installed on the following models:

BMW X1 (F48)
