This brand of engines entered production in 1998 and until 2002 pleased its consumers and car owners with good performance. The cylinder block here was made of cast iron. As a power system there was a quality injector. The row arrangement did not distinguish the device among competitors. There were only four cylinders available. And for each cylinder there were 2 valves. Professionals recorded a piston stroke of 83.5 millimeters, and the cylinder diameter was 85 millimeters. The compression ratio in this model became 9.7. This engine has a displacement of 1.9 liters. At 5500 rpm it produced 118 horsepower, and at 5300 rpm it was reduced to 105 horsepower.

The maximum torque at 2500 rpm is 165 N*m.

If you increase the rpm to 3900, you can get a torque of 180 N*m. It is best here to use gasoline grades not lower than 95, it will keep the part intact. It has an environmental standard Euro 3, and the engine weighs 138 kilograms. Gasoline consumption in urban areas will be 11 liters per 100 kilometers, on the highway this figure will fall to 6 liters per 100 kilometers, and in mixed territory consumption will be about 8 liters per 100 kilometers. The oil consumption will be almost 1000 grams per 1000 kilometers.

The following oils can be used for full performance: 5W-30, 0W-30, 5W-40, 0W-40. There is approximately 4 liters of oil in the engine. It is best to change it every 7-10 thousand kilometers. At the moments of the engine in the operating mode, the temperature is from 90 to 95 degrees Celsius. The resource of the apparatus will be more than 300 thousand kilometers in practice. Potentially, tuning can give more than 150 horsepower.

Advantages

At the very first stage of development, the engine was called M43TU and was a modified version of the previous models. Here the block for the cylinders had to be modified for the balance shafts. It became slightly bored for the pistons, and a crankshaft was used for increased piston stroke. The connecting rods and pistons were also changed.

The camshaft in the weak version has been modified, the rest of the cylinder head is untouched. The exhaust manifold is made of plastic, and the proven Bosch engine management system was installed.

Cars of index 18i or 16i were fully suitable for this apparatus. And in parallel, the developers produced models that had 16V. After the replacement of the motor, a model with a volume of 2 liters appeared.

Disadvantages

The new system resulted in the model sometimes being “famous” for oil leaks. The valve cover usually has the biggest faults in such versions. It is not difficult to solve such a problem, it is necessary to replace the gasket, sealant and HVAC.

The engine usually gives ambiguous characteristic sounds, crackles, noises, knocks. This may occur as a result of a broken damper. To prevent such problems, it is necessary to use a repair kit in time. In addition, hydraulic compensators may also knock.

When accelerating, sometimes drivers find a dip in speed, the car can float at the revs, the engine overheats. But the small power is the biggest problem, because the power plant has insufficient resources. In general, however, the engine has a good resource, if you take good care and maintain the machine, then you can drive many hundreds of kilometers. Operation without problems is almost impossible here.

Modifications

  • The M43B19 UL was produced from 1998 to 2001 inclusive. It is a weak model with an additional camshaft. The power output here is 105 horsepower at 5300 rpm. Maximum torque will be 165 N*m at 2500 rpm.
  • The M43B19 OL was produced from 1998 to 2002 inclusive. This version is the basic version, it has an output of 118 horsepower at 5500 rpm. Maximum torque here is equal to 180 N*m at 3900 rpm.

Chip tuning

Most often, in order to increase the power of this engine, specialists use a stroker from neighboring models. If desired, the user can familiarize himself with the main manipulations from any professional. It is also possible to install a cold intake, an intake manifold for sports models and a camshaft with a phase from 266 to 272. An exhaust manifold with 4-2-1 technology is still in use. The car will lose a little bit in the lower gears, but you can squeeze out another 20 to 30 horsepower. The best way to pump the machine will be to buy the engine with a contract and install a powerful engine with reliable characteristics at the very beginning. The rating of this machine is assessed by experts as good.
