The M47D20 diesel engine has proven itself to be as positive as possible during the period of its constant use. This power unit was used exclusively for BMW cars belonging to the third and fifth series of production. It has an in-line form and a 4-cylinder head. There are 4 valves on each cylinder.

It is recommended to use diesel fuel for comfortable operation. At the same time, the consumption can be called actually quite economical. If you mainly move on busy urban roads, for 100 kilometers you will have within 7-8 liters. Driving on the highway will take away only 4-5 liters. And if we talk about a mixed style of driving, you will spend about 5-6 liters per 100 kilometers. Oil consumption is equal to 700 gr per 1000 km.

The technical characteristics of the M47D20 engine for BMW can be called excellent, if only for its life, which in practice is 400,000+ km. With proper care and favorable operating conditions, the figure can be much higher.

Regardless of your goals, this motor will do its job perfectly. Even if the power figure is too low for you, it can be easily adjusted with the proper manipulations, but we will return to this point a little later.

Advantages

The described motor appeared as a replacement for the M41D17 engine. If we rely on numerous reviews of the M47D20 engine, this time the manufacturers have really worked hard. In front of you is an in-line power unit with a cast iron cylinder block, the diameter of each of which is 84 mm. The block is covered with an aluminum twin-shaft head. There is a system of direct fuel injection. The creators used a chain in the timing drive. Active production of the described engine was stopped in 2007, it was replaced by another diesel engine with four cylinders – N47.

Disadvantages

Despite all the positive aspects, the M47D20 motor has problems. We will try to list the most common ones:

  • After some time, the axles of the swirl flaps wear out. They can snap off and “fly” into the engine itself. This is fraught with the fact that your power unit may become inoperable. We recommend that you remove the flaps in advance and put the plugs in as well. In the process, you will need to remove the intake manifold one way or another. Clean it, and at the same time the valve – EGR. If desired, you can plug it. After all of the above is done, we advise you to engage in re-flashing the ECU directly under the current operating conditions.
  • Occasionally, the occurrence of foreign noises is noticed. This is a fairly common problem with M47s and often originates in the crankshaft damper. Inspect the crankshaft damper and replace if necessary. The part has an approximate service life of 100,000 km.
  • The M47D20 sometimes loses traction after 2,000 rpm. This is a solvable problem and we recommend that you contact a specialist immediately.

We have managed to list not all the problems. Sometimes owners have to meet with tensioning of the timing chain, sometimes oil leaks and so on. All of these are insignificant and can be solved without special monetary expenses.

Without proper skills, we do not recommend “self-treatment” of the power unit, because this is fraught not only with the intensification of existing problems, but also the emergence of completely new ones. Therefore, the best solution is to contact qualified specialists.

Modifications

The M47D20 engine has few modifications, such as:

  • M47D20O0. Produced from 1988 to 2003. It has a power rating of 136 hp.
  • M47D20U0. Power – 116 hp. Years of production: 2001-2003.

Chip tuning

If the owner of a car with the described motor believes that the horsepower indicator in it is too low, this problem can be changed by increasing the power through various manipulations. For example, you can go to a special place where you can request a firmware control unit. This will cost you about 15-20 thousand rubles and will give an increase of about 30 hp.

If that’s not enough, you can get a turbo (Garett GT2260 from the 530d), an oversized intercooler, injectors (535d), and some other parts. This is a more complicated path, but it will ensure you reach a bar higher than 250 horsepower.
