This engine was produced from 2000 to 2006. It also used aluminum for the cylinder block. Nothing changed here in terms of the power system and the familiar injector was adopted. The row arrangement did not surprise anyone. The 6 cylinders helped to achieve a great result for performance and for each such cylinder there were 4 valves.

The piston stroke was again 75 millimeters, but the diameter of the cylinder was slightly reduced and was 84 millimeters. The compression ratio was again equal to 10.5. The volume of this engine 2.5 liters perfectly coped with the absorption of fuel. Power was 192 horsepower at 6,000 rpm. At 3500 rpm, the maximum torque was 237 N*m.

Again, at least 95 gasoline was suitable as fuel. The Euro 3-4 environmental standards made it possible to reduce the air pollution factor. The engine weighed about 130 kilograms. Gasoline consumption in urban areas reached a crazy 14 liters per 100 kilometers, on the highway it fell to 7 liters per 100 kilometers, but within mixed territories it was equal to 9.4 liters per 100 kilometers. The oil was again spent in the limit of 1000 grams per 1000 kilometers. For the engine the best solutions were oils 5W-40 or 5W-30.
Up to 6.5 liters of oil were present in the engine at the same time. Replacement here was recommended every 10 thousand kilometers. Again, the operating temperature of the engine was about 95 degrees Celsius. The resource of the engine was not bad and amounted to about 300 thousand kilometers. In the potential tuning could allow to achieve 300 horsepower. The apparatus was installed on the 325i, 525i, X3, X4, Z3 series.

Advantages

The problems in this version repeat their predecessors. The motor is durable and of high quality, it has received very good marks from specialists. The cylinder block in this unit has not changed, it is made of aluminum with liners made of cast iron. The crankshaft is also made of cast iron, connecting rods slightly increased, now you could see small-sized pistons.

The cylinder head is also unchanged, there is a dual vanos. But the long intake manifold has been updated and greatly reduced. It has wide channels, it helped to improve the power of the motor and gave free work to all its systems. The electronic throttle slide received a diameter of 64 millimeters, and the control system from the famous manufacturer Siemens was noticeably updated.
The motor was often used on the series indexed 25i. In 2005-2006, this engine began to be displaced by inline sixes and other quality units.

Disadvantages

The oil is still very much lost due to the piston rings, which are often clogged. New rings will improve the performance of the machine and parts from other models can be used. The crankcase gas vent valve may also need replacing, and it should be done quickly if it breaks.
The engine can overheat, its condition depends directly on the cleanliness of the radiator. Cleaning, running air from the cooling systems, checking the pump, radiator cap and thermostat will help to solve all problems with this part.

The ignition is sometimes skipped, this occurs frequently in other versions as well. The hydraulic compensators can also be clogged. To solve the problem, you need to buy a new part.
The red oil light burns out because of the poor condition of the pump or cup. These elements need to be replaced in time and everything will start working normally again.

The position of the camshaft and its sensors are not exactly stable and sometimes fail. The threaded fasteners are again lame, the thermostat does not hold for long, the requirements for oil are greatly inflated, and the uninterrupted service life is not long. Still, this model is much more reliable than its predecessors. For swap and other operations the motor is suitable perfectly.

Modifications

Changes and modifications are not provided for this version, they are not needed for this model and will only work to the detriment of the wonderful engine.

Chip tuning

The engine’s power is very easy to increase with engine improvements to the 3 liter version. To achieve this result, it will be necessary to purchase a crankshaft, pistons, connecting rods, intake/exhaust, camshaft, injector and control system. The Stroker kit of this version will improve the power to 230 horsepower.

Power can be improved more strongly with sport camshafts. Improved phasing, lifts, cold intakes, equal length exhaust manifold, straight pipe exhaust will help achieve the desired results. A full tune-up will show 260 to 270 horsepower.

Turbo can only be used after repeating the algorithm for previous turbocharged upgrades. The connecting rods and pistons in the base configuration can handle up to 400 horsepower.

To avoid doing all of the above, you can purchase a high quality kit compressor. It will be installed on the basic pistons and give out about 300 horsepower of power. The cost of such an undertaking is its main disadvantage, it is unlikely to be affordable to the owners of such engines.

This engine is installed on the following models:

BMW 3-Series (E46)

BMW 5-Series (E60)

BMW 5-Series (E39)

BMW X3 (E83)

BMW Z4 (E85)
