The BMW M57D25 is a diesel engine that stands out from the other power units in its range with a working volume of 2.5 liters. Its maximum power reaches the mark of 163 horsepower. The internal combustion engine is equipped with an additional supercharger in the form of a turbine. The installation was made on cars of the Bavarians of the fifth series. The most striking representative is the BMW E39 with M57D25 under the hood.

Advantages

The technical characteristics of this 2.5-liter motor are provided due to the fact that it was created on the basis of a three-liter analog M57D30, which has undergone certain changes that allowed to obtain geometry with the parameters of power units of the M51 line.

The engine has a cast iron cylinder block with a cylinder diameter of 80 millimeters. Inside the block there is a crankshaft that provides 82.8 millimeters of piston stroke, the compression height of which is 47 millimeters. The connecting rods are quite long – 137.6 millimeters. In combination, these parameters allowed to get 2.5 liters of working volume.

A distinctive feature of the M57D25 engine from the M51 series engines is the use of a cylinder head with two camshafts, providing the operation of 4 valves on each cylinder. The exhaust and intake valves do not differ from each other in diameter, which is 26 millimeters. The valve feet are also the same – 6 millimeters each.

The camshafts are driven by a timing chain drive. The chain life is quite long, and with normal maintenance, M57D25 reviews claim no problems with the chain drive.

The organization of direct fuel injection is organized by the Common rail system. The turbine is Garrett GT2052V, characterized by the possibility of variable impeller geometry. This provides greater engine performance.

To improve the environmental performance of the powertrain, it was decided to use EGR for exhaust gas recirculation, which also had a positive effect on fuel consumption. Vortex flaps were installed on the intake manifold. Bosch DDE4.0 electronic engine control unit was used.

Disadvantages

It is necessary to know what should be the temperature of the engine and constantly monitor this indicator, otherwise there is a high probability of overheating, which is fraught with a broken cylinder head.

Also, as with the M47 versions of the engine line, these powertrains have a problem with the swirl flaps. While driving, they can fall off and get into the interior of the engine, especially when the starter is cranked for long periods of time. This can lead to the need to overhaul the engine. To avoid such troubles, it is best to remove the flaps, then adjust the software for normal operation without these devices.

Extraneous noises and sounds may occur while driving. This is also a fairly common problem, which can be caused by crankshaft damper failure. It should be checked and replaced if necessary.

It is not uncommon to find that the cabin smells of diesel and the engine starts to lose power. This problem is caused by a cracked manifold on the exhaust. You will have to replace it with a new one, it is better to use a cast iron version.

The injectors do not cause problems until they pass the 100 thousand kilometer mark. Turbines also last quite a long time, and if quality oil is used, they can run more than 300-400 thousand kilometers. The use of low-quality lubricant can lead to a reduction in service life.

In general, this motor does not cause quite a lot of negative feedback from owners, as it serves for quite a long time, in case of timely and quality maintenance. Using quality fuel and suitable engine oil it will be possible to overcome about 500 thousand kilometers without the need for serious repair of the power unit.

Technical specifications

The M57D25 engine provides a displacement of 2497 cubic centimeters, which is provided by eighty-millimeter cylinders and a piston stroke of 82.8 millimeters. This allows to achieve a maximum compression ratio of 17.5, which is quite high for diesel power units.

The engine is very capricious, so it should be filled only with high-quality diesel fuel. In conditions of normal road surface and measured driving, in the city the car with such an engine will consume about 8.2 liters of fuel per hundred kilometers of traveled distance. When driving on the highway will have to refuel about 6.7 liters of diesel for every hundred. At the same time, emissions during each kilometer are 180 grams of harmful substances.

Thanks to the installation of a turbine, when the engine is cranked up to 4 thousand rpm, it manages to provide 163 horsepower. Peak torque reaches 350 Nm when the engine revolutions are 2-2.5 thousand rpm.

Modifications

A total of two modifications of the power unit were produced:

  • From 2000 to 2003, the M57D25O0 version was produced. This is the basic version of the motor, which provided for the installation of a Garrett GT2052V turbine. This solution allowed to develop up to 163 horsepower and maximum torque of 350 Nm. This engine could be found under the hood of E39 525d.
  • From 2004 to 2007, there was a version M57D25O1 on the assembly line. This is an updated modification of the M57TU motor. The power was raised to 177 horses, and the maximum torque reached 400 Nm. This was achieved thanks to the installation of a Garrett GT2056V turbine. This motor can be found under the hood of BMW E60 525d.

Tuning

The margin for modernization of this motor leaves much to be desired. It is possible to carry out classic chip tuning. Changing the software makes it possible to get about 40 more horsepower on top. It is not worth trying to squeeze more out of the engine, as it will not bring proper results and may negatively affect its resource.

This engine is installed on the following models:

BMW 5-Series (E39)
