Advantages

In 2002, M57D30 power units appeared, which began to be installed under the hood of Bavarian cars. The working volume of these engines is slightly less than 3 liters. Such indicators designers managed to achieve due to the fact that they began to use a crankshaft with an increased index of piston stroke, which reaches 90 millimeters. As an additional supercharger used an updated version of the turbine Garrett GT2260V, and the power unit is controlled by an electronic unit DDE5.

The M57 engine lineup also included the M57D30TUTOP, which was the most powerful version. The maximum power was achieved by using two turbos with different impeller sizes, BorgWarner KP39 and K26. The turbochargers have an operating pressure of 1.85 bar, which is quite a lot, and allows to achieve a compression ratio of 16.5.

All power units belonging to this range are equipped with an electronic system that regulates the geometry of the impeller on the turbine. The standard power supply system is made in the form of direct fuel injection from the Bavarians, which is known to all – Common Rail. This power system is characterized by the presence of a pressure accumulator. In the design there is a standard intercooler, which allows you to blow into the engine much more air.

Electronic modern sensors allow to control the operating temperature of the lubricating fluid. The piezoelectric injector installed in the fuel supply system ensures that the right amount of diesel fuel is delivered into the combustion chamber depending on the specific needs of the situation. This solution makes it possible to obtain minimal fuel consumption and also has a positive effect on the level of harmful emissions into the atmosphere.

In order for the power units to provide the required emission figures, the Bavarian designers had to use intake manifolds equipped with vortex flaps. As the crankshaft rotates at low speeds, one of the intake channels is blocked by these flaps. The result is greater combustion efficiency due to improved fuel quality.

Disadvantages

The same, problematic and unfortunate, swirl flaps are also present in the design of this intake manifold. The nodes are subject to increased wear, and can simply fall out inside the engine during operation, which leads to its disrepair. To avoid getting into a major engine overhaul, you need to remove the swirl flaps beforehand, and put plugs in their place. After physical removal it is necessary to change the software for normal operation of the motor without these units.

The occurrence of extraneous noises and strong knocks is also a common problem that owners of cars with such motors may encounter. As a rule, the main cause of this trouble is the failure of the crankshaft damper. It is necessary to simply replace the problematic unit.

The motor may simply stop pulling and there is a loss of normal power, accompanied by a strong exhaust odor in the cabin. This is also a typical malfunction, which is a crack in the intake manifold. It is best to put a new unit, but choose it from the standard version of the M57D30 engine, as in it it is made of a strong cast iron alloy.

Fuel injectors, as a rule, do not cause special problems to owners of cars with such motors under the hood, but they do not pass more than 100 thousand kilometers. Turbines for 400 thousand kilometers do not break down, and do not cause special problems. But it is necessary to use only the original recommended motor oil, otherwise the resource can be significantly reduced.

These motors are known among owners of Bavarian brand cars as one of the most high-quality and reliable. If the engine is properly maintained and only high quality fuel and lubricant are used, no serious malfunctions occur with it. It is very important to use only quality diesel, as the fuel system is quite complex and can fail quickly. If the car is operated properly, the resource of the M57D30TU2TOP can be more than 500 thousand kilometers.

Modifications

The M57 engine lineup is quite successful, so Bavarian engineers constantly carried out refinement of engines, which entailed the appearance of a huge number of modifications:

  • From 1998 to 2003, a version of the M57D30O0 engine was produced, which is considered the base engine. Such power units can be found under the hood of BMW 330d E46 and 530d E39. Thanks to the installation of a Garrett GT2556V turbine, this motor developed maximum power of 184 horsepower and torque of 390 Nm.
  • M57D30O0 is a more powerful modification that was on the assembly line from 2000 to 2004. It is a modification with slightly increased power, which is intended for BMW E39 530d. The maximum power of the engine motor is 193 horsepower, and the torque is up to 410 Nm.
  • The M57D30O1 / M57TU is an engine for the BMW 330d E46 and X3 E83 that was on the assembly line from 2003 to 2006. The displacement of this powertrain has been facelifted to 3 liters, and it is also powered by a Garrett GT2260V turbine. The engine has a maximum output of 204 horses and 410 Nm of torque.
  • M57D30O1 / M57TU is a modification for BMW E60 530d, 730d E65, X5 E53 and X3 E83 cars, which was produced from 2002 to 2006, and had a maximum output of up to 218 horsepower, as well as a torque of 500 Newtons.
  • M57D30T1 / M57TUTOP – modification, produced from 2004 to 2007, which is the top. The difference of the engine is the use of two turbines BorgWarner BV39 + K26. As a result – it was possible to remove from the engine 272 horses and 560 Nm of maximum torque.
  • M57D30U2 / M57TU2 is an engine modification designed for installation under the hood of BMW 525d E60 and 325d E90, which was produced from 2006 to 2010. The main difference is the use of an aluminum cylinder block, as well as refinement of the fuel supply system, which allowed to achieve compliance with Euro 4 environmental class standards. The peak power of the engine is 197 horses, and the torque reaches 400 Newtons.
  • The M57D30O2 / M57TU2 is a 231 horsepower unit that was fitted to cars on the E90 330d and E60 530d. The maximum torque is 500 Nm.
  • M57D30O2 / M57TU2 is the engine version intended for installation on the E60 530d. Peak power of the motor is 235 horsepower and torque is 500 Nm.

Technical specifications

The exact working volume of the engine is 2993 cubic centimeters. Diesel is used as a fuel. The diameter of the cylinders is 84 millimeters. The inline six-cylinder block uses a crankshaft with a piston stroke of 90 millimeters. There are 4 valves on each cylinder. The compression ratio is 16.5 to one.

The engine emits up to 210 grams of pollutants per kilometer. Depending on driving style, the average consumption of the M57D30TU2TOP ranges from 6.7 to 7.8 liters per hundred kilometers.

Thanks to the twin-turbocharger, a maximum output of 286 horsepower is achieved at 4.4 thousand rpm. Peak torque starts to appear at 1750 rpm and amounts to 580 Nm.

This engine is installed on the following models:

BMW 5-Series (E61)

BMW 5-Series (E60)
