M57TU2D30 is a diesel power unit, which is characterized by a working volume of 2.9 liters. Its power can vary from 245 to 306 horsepower, depending on the modification. On the motor there is an additional supercharger in the form of a turbine. The development of the engine was made with the purpose of installation on the BMW X5.

Advantages
The installation of M57 engines began on Bavarian cars back in 1998. They replaced the outdated M51 diesel engines. The new engine was developed on the basis of the predecessor, so it also provides for the installation of a cylinder block cast from aluminum. The cylinders themselves received an increased diameter of 84 millimeters, and inside there was a crankshaft with a piston stroke of 90 millimeters, which allowed to provide almost three liters of working volume.
The design is covered with an aluminum cylinder head, which provides for the installation of 24 valves, and is organized according to the DOHC system. Inlet and exhaust valves had the same dimensions – 27.4 millimeters, and the diameter of their feet is equal to 6 millimeters. The springs and valves are the same as those used on the M47 four-cylinder engine.
The camshafts are driven by the timing chain. Under normal operating conditions, the chain may not need to be replaced as it has a long service life.
The power unit is equipped with the classic, for the Bavarians, Common rail fuel injection system. It also has a turbocharger, accompanied by an intercooler. The M57TU2D30 is equipped with a Garrett GT2260VK turbine, which is characterized by variable geometry.
In order to meet all environmental requirements, the engine was fitted with an intake manifold equipped with swirl flaps. This allowed to achieve that at low speeds one intake channel is closed and provides better formation of mixture with its subsequent combustion. Also, the EGR valve, which directs part of the exhaust back into the cylinders, contributes to better combustion. The electronic control unit of the engine is Bosch DDE6.
Disadvantages
A typical problem with the M57TU2D30 engine, as well as its variants and the entire M47 range, is swirl flaps. They can break off while driving and end up inside the powertrain, rendering it unusable. The optimum situation is to remove this assembly physically and programmatically to prevent such malfunctions.
Motors can cause inconvenience to their owners in the form of knocking and extraneous noises. This is due to failure of the crankshaft damper. It should be diagnosed and replaced if necessary.
You may experience a sudden drop in power and exhaust fumes may enter the interior of the vehicle. This problem is usually caused by cracks in the exhaust manifold. It should be replaced with a cast iron one, from conventional M57 powertrain versions, without the TU prefix.
Piezoelectric injectors on such motors have a fairly long life – about 100 thousand kilometers. The turbine also serves for quite a long time, only if high quality oil is used. It will be able to pass more than 300 thousand kilometers. The use of low-quality lubricant can severely impair the life of this unit.
In general, the diesel power unit M57TU2D30 is characterized by great reliability and good operating life. With proper care and the use of quality oil and fuel, it does not cause any special problems. Using quality diesel fuel is one of the most important factors when using such a motor. Otherwise, fuel systems begin to deteriorate. With timely maintenance, and compliance with all recommendations for operation, such motors pass more than 500 thousand kilometers.
Technical specifications
The exact displacement of the M57TU2D30 motor is 2,933 cubic centimeters. It is an inline six-cylinder engine with a cylinder diameter of 84 millimeters. The piston stroke of 90 millimeters provides a compression ratio of 16.5 to 1. A turbine is installed as an additional supercharger.
Maximum torque depends on the modification, and can range from 540 to 600 Nm, which are achieved at 1750 and 2500 thousand rpm, respectively. Peak power is achieved at 4000 and 4400 rpm, and can be 245 or 306 horses.
The design uses 4 valves for each cylinder. Fuel consumption averages about 7.5 liters for every hundred miles traveled. At the same time, the emission of harmful substances into the atmosphere reaches 198 grams per kilometer.
Tuning
As a rule, such engines are not often tuned, as their basic power is enough for a comfortable ride. But if you really want to, you can get about 40 additional horsepower by regular chip tuning. Installing a downpipe will give the opportunity to add another 10-15 horses under the hood of your car.
