Advantages

M57TUD30 engines were first installed on Bavarian cars in 2002. The working volume of the new development was three liters, which were obtained by increasing the stroke of the piston on the crankshaft. The characteristics of the M57TUD30 were provided thanks to the installation of a new modification of the supercharger Garrett GT2260V. The DDE5 electronic control unit also contributed to the dynamic performance.

This motor has electronic adjustment of the impeller geometry, which allows to increase its efficiency. The Common Rail direct fuel injection system is characterized by the installation of a pressure accumulator. By installing an intercooler, it was possible to provide a greater amount of air supplied to the motor. Electronic sensors made it possible to control the level of lubricating fluid in the engine.

The piezoelectric injector, which is located in the intake system, ensures that the correct amount of fuel is delivered to the cylinders. This unit is also aimed at reducing fuel consumption and lowering the level of harmful emissions into the atmosphere. The intake manifolds of the power unit are equipped with vortex flaps, thanks to which it was possible to achieve full compliance with environmental requirements. Each flap closes one intake valve when the engine is running at low speeds. This improves the quality of the mixture and ensures complete combustion.

But the description of the powertrain does not end here, as it also has an EGR valve. This is done to ensure better combustion quality of the mixture in the cylinders by directing part of the exhaust gases inside the combustion chamber.

Disadvantages

Owners’ feedback indicates that such power units are very capricious to the quality of the fuel used. If low-quality diesel fuel is used, the injectors will not fail, the fuel pump will fail, and other elements of the power system will not work correctly. It is not worth saving on fuel, as replacement of all fuel system components will be very expensive. In case of normal operating conditions, the injectors are able to pass about 100 thousand kilometers. Unlike the M51 motors, the M57TUD30 has a fairly high-quality high-pressure fuel pump. Turbines also have a normal service life, which often exceeds 450 thousand kilometers. But such indicators will be possible to get only in case of using high-quality lubricating fluids, otherwise, the resource will be much lower. Oil should be changed every 8-10 thousand kilometers, it is better to replace the filters, as well as the cover of the filter element housing, as they are very often damaged.

Sensitivity to overheating is also one of the disadvantages of this motor. As a result, owners get expensive repairs and a huge number of other disadvantages. It is also worth constantly monitoring the condition of the exhaust gas recirculation valve, which is considered a weak point of such power units. Less often, problems can arise with the mass air flow sensor, as well as electro-vacuum hydraulic supports of the power unit. Such elements should be replaced after overcoming the mark of 20 thousand kilometers.

A not uncommon problem is the formation of oil leaks on the connections from the turbine to the intercooler or vent valve. Many owners make the mistake of assuming that the turbine has failed. The cause needs to be looked for elsewhere. The problem is that the oil separator does not work properly, which leads to a lack of timely cutoff of crankcase gases. This entails the formation of oil vapors on the sockets. To eliminate the problem, it is worth replacing the roller responsible for cleaning the crankcase gases, and at the same time change the oil in the engine. It is not superfluous to flush the cyclone.

Similar to the M47in M57TUD30 motor line, the M47in M57TUD30 motors install not very reliable swirl flaps that break off and fall into the engine. This can disable the entire powertrain. To prevent such a problem, you need to remove the flaps and replace the software for normal operation without this node. After overcoming 200 thousand kilometers, the crankshaft damper begins to work badly. Extraneous noises and sounds during the operation of the motor can help diagnose this malfunction.

Technical specifications

The M57TUD30 engine features a displacement of 2993 cubic centimeters. It is an in-line six-cylinder power unit with a cylinder diameter of 84 millimeters. This working volume is provided thanks to a piston stroke of 90 millimeters. The motor also has an additional supercharger in the form of a turbine.

Diesel fuel is used for operation. The average consumption at measured operation and normal quality of road surface is about 9.1 liters per hundred kilometers of traveled distance. At the same time, the emission of harmful substances into the atmosphere does not exceed 243 grams per kilometer.

Maximum torque is 410 Nm, which the motor develops when revved up to 3,250 rpm. Peak power reaches a mark of 204 horsepower developed at 4,000 rpm.

Tuning

Classic chip tuning can help increase horsepower by 40 horsepower. Installing downpipes helps to add about 20 more horses to your powertrain. It is pointless to dig further, as it will cost more, and you will not get normal output. It is easier to weld a more powerful engine into the car.

This engine is installed on the following models:

BMW X3 (E83)
