M62B35TU is a gasoline power unit with a displacement of 3.5 liters. The maximum power reaches 245 horsepower. The motor was installed on the BMW fifth series.

These engines were characterized by great reliability and good technical characteristics, thanks to which they managed to become popular among fans of cars from the Bavarians. However, practically all German-made engines are characterized by such indicators.

Advantages

The first versions of the M62B35TU power units began to be produced in 2003, when they began to be installed on serial cars. The M62B44 version was taken as the basis for production, which was characterized by good technical characteristics, but began to become obsolete at that time.

During the assembly of the motor, some design changes were made to improve its performance:

  • Cylinders began to be produced with the diameter reduced to 84 millimeters.
  • For the manufacture of liners began to use alusil, before that, the engines were equipped only with nikasil liners.
  • The camshafts have also been modified, and their phase has been increased. Some parts have also been lightened by using alloys with a lower weight.

The main assembly of power units was made on the territory of Germany. But over time, part of the production was moved to partner plants that cooperated with the Bavarians under contract.

Disadvantages

Regarding reliability, the engines do not cause special claims from the owners. In the case of normal maintenance, it is possible to avoid the appearance of particularly large problems. It is also worth noting the high service life, compared to motors of similar class.

But despite all this, you can’t do without characteristic problems that arise during long-term operation of power units. In M62B35TU there are some components that should be paid special attention to.

Leaks are not an uncommon problem with these motors. This is due to the fact that the gaskets are made of low quality materials. Therefore, oil leaks cannot be avoided. Such problems become most noticeable when the oil pan is slightly deformed.

The motor may create an increased level of noise during operation. As a rule, this defect is noticed at a mileage of 250 thousand kilometers. This fault does not cause any problems, except discomfort while driving.

Less often, owners of M62B35TU may encounter floating rpm while driving. The cause of this deficiency is air intake through the throttle valve.

There are no more difficulties in the operation of such power units. In case of normal measured operation and timely maintenance, repairs may not be required even after 300 thousand kilometers of mileage.

The main engine maintenance action is to change the lubricating fluid. Change the oil after every 6-9 thousand kilometers of mileage. Together with the lubricant, it is better to change the filter elements. Some owners also wash the motor itself, but it is not necessary to do this. Such a procedure can negatively affect the resource.

The timing chain resource is about 300 thousand kilometers according to manufacturers’ assurances. The signal for replacement is a noise that increases with increasing revolutions. Some owners of cars with such a motor replace the entire timing chain at the first signs of wear of any parts.

Repairing such a motor is not a cheap pleasure, as well as all other engines from the Bavarians. First of all, it is influenced by the high cost of spare parts. Even in the case of purchasing a contract motor, it is impossible to do without investing a serious amount of money. Also, a notable fact is the lack of repair sizes of connecting rods, which leads to the impossibility of boring the crankshaft. In case of its failure, the part will have to be replaced completely.

Technical specifications

The exact displacement of the power unit is 3498 cubic centimeters. It is characterized by the presence of eight cylinders, and is made in a V layout.The cylinder diameter is 84 millimeters, with a piston stroke of 78.9 millimeters. This allows for a compression ratio of 10 to 1. Four valves are used per cylinder.

For normal operation it is necessary to use high-quality gasoline with octane number not less than 95. It is difficult to call these motors economical, but do not forget that they are eight-cylinder, so depending on the manner of driving, fuel consumption per hundred miles traveled is from 11.9 to 12 liters.

The engine has a maximum output of 245 horsepower, which is achieved at 5,800 rpm. Peak torque is reached at 3.8 thousand rpm, with 345 Nm.

Modifications

There is also an engine M62B35, which has the same displacement, but has a maximum output of 235 horsepower and peak torque of 320 Nm. Otherwise, all parameters are similar to the power unit M62B35TU.

The M62TUB35 engine has a displacement of 3.5 liters. At the same time, it stands out with a maximum power of 238 horsepower. The maximum torque does not differ from the M62B35TU motor and amounts to 345 Nm.

Tuning

Often, owners of cars with such motors, apply only chip tuning. Changing the software allows you to get more power, as well as increase the dynamics of the car by 10-15 percent. This is the easiest way to increase the output of the engine.

It is not uncommon to install a sports manifold. This reduces drag, which has a positive effect on the efficiency of the power unit. But this leads to an increase in noise during operation. Less often the compressor is installed. Together with the installation of a compressor, a more powerful fuel pump will have to be used.

It is not worth installing a turbine, as the engine already produces a lot of power without it. The cost of installing a turbine is quite high, and you will not get a huge increase in power.
