The M62B44 engine replaced the familiar M60B40 engine in 1996. All motors of the M60 range were replaced by modified versions of the M62 series engines.The M60B40 engine was used as the basis for the creation of this motor. M62B44, the characteristics of which were quite impressive, was characterized by the installation of a single-row timing chain. Unlike the previous engine, which was equipped with a double chain, the life of this version often exceeded 200 thousand kilometers of mileage.
The M62b44 motor, tuning of which is described below, was also characterized by the installation of new throttle plates. The intake manifold also received changes. The applied ignition coils had practically no differences from those installed on M52 engines. An innovation was the use of a programmable thermostat. The engine control unit used was Bosch DME M5.2.
The specifications of the M62B44 powertrain, reviews of which are provided below, were slightly changed in 1998. Until then, the M62B44 was produced without vanos, but now the motors were accompanied by a VANOS system. With the additions should also be noted the installation of electronic throttle, intake manifold with a reduced diameter of the channels, and the replacement of the old electronic control unit for a new – Bosch DME M7.2. The finalized engine was labeled M62TUB44. This engine was installed on cars of the German concern, having the index 40i. M62B44 with mkpp served as a base model for the creation of a less powerful power unit M62B35 with a working volume of 3.5 liters, as well as a more voluminous motor M62B46, which provided 4.6 liters of volume.
In 2001, the production of 8-cylinder engines with V configuration started, which began to supplant the previous lineup. The N62B44 engine began to gradually squeeze the M62B44 power unit out of the automobile market.

Disadvantages
