Advantages

The reviews that the M62B44TU engine has received claim that it is quite reliable and a good option to buy. It provides good traction in the entire range, including the lower range. The operating life of this power unit with timely maintenance and measured operation, overcomes the mark of 500 thousand kilometers of mileage.

Also, M62B44 and M62B44TU engines are characterized by good suitability for overhaul and partial repair. But for this power unit are characterized by all the problems faced by owners of motors made of aluminum and coated with nicasil and alusil. Among experienced specialists, these engines are nicknamed disposable. The M62B44TU version has great advantages, as the alusil cylinder blocks are more repairable than the nikasil ones.

If there is an option to purchase a used car with such a motor under the hood, it is worthwhile to immediately carry out diagnostics, which allows you to identify and eliminate all faults. After that, you will feel comfortable behind the wheel, and will not face a large number of different problems.

Disadvantages

Cars, under the hood of which engines M62B44TU are placed, do not cause their owners huge problems, but some typical faults still appear. The main disadvantages of such power units are:

  • When the vehicle is running, you may hear a knocking noise. This is the first indication that the timing chain is stretched or the tensioner bar is broken.
  • The valve cover gasket and coolant bath also often leaks. These are typical faults that are very easily fixed by replacing the antifreeze reservoir and buying a new gasket under the manifold and pump of the cooling system.
  • Often, owners of cars with such motors may encounter instability of operation. The cause of floating revolutions, as a rule, is that the intake manifold begins to suck air. The crankcase ventilation valve can also fail, which leads to similar problems. Often the cause is also the failure of the throttle position sensors or mass air flow sensors. In the latter case, the throttle valves can also become dirty.

Increased oil consumption in such motors begins to be observed after passing the mark of 250 thousand kilometers. The problem is solved quite simply – the classic replacement of oil caps. Also, after passing 200 thousand kilometers, it is necessary to pay attention to the condition of the engine cushions and replace them if necessary.

M62B44TU motors will operate properly only if a quality lubricant is used. Manufacturers recommend using 0W-30, 5W-30, 0W-40 and 5W-40 oils. Lubricant 10W-60 can be used, but you need to do it extremely carefully, especially in winter, as its increased density can lead to a problematic start of the motor. In general, the motor will not cause problems and difficulties if you do not save on working fluids and maintain it in a timely manner.

Description

1996 marked the year when the M60 range made history with the arrival of the revised M62 series, along with the M62B44 power units. The previous M60B40 engine was used as the basis for the 4.4-liter displacement engines. The old cylinder block was slightly modified by increasing the diameter of the combustion chamber. Nicasil liners were used, which were replaced by aluminized liners in 1998. The crankshaft used was a new steel-cast crankshaft with increased stroke length and six counterweights. The connecting rods of the M62B44TU and its conventional version remained the same. The pistons were replaced by new ones with a diameter of 92 millimeters.

The cylinder heads were the same as on the previous version. The characteristics of the camshafts also succumbed to changes. The valves remained from the old version. Plates and springs were reduced in weight, and the cylinder head cover was made of magnesium.

The double-row timing chain has been replaced with a redesigned single-row timing chain that provides 200,000 kilometers of service life. The throttle plates have also been replaced with newer versions. Changes did not pass by the intake manifold. Ignition coils became similar to those that were used on the line of M52 motors. Among other things, a programmable thermostat was introduced.

In 1998, an updated modification of the engine called M62TUB44 was presented, which began to be equipped with the VANOS intake shaft timing system. On the power unit began to use an electronic throttle valve. On the intake manifold used channels with a smaller diameter. Electronic control unit began to be installed Bosch DME M7.2

In 2001, production of a new version of the engines in V8 configuration began, and then the M62 series was replaced by the N62 line of engines, characterized by the use of new technologies and greater performance.

Technical specifications

The M62B44TU motor provides characteristics in the form of a working volume of 4398 cubic centimeters. The piston strokes 82.7 millimeters, while the cylinder diameter is 92 millimeters. This combination allows for a compression ratio of 10 to 1. There are four valves per cylinder in the eight-cylinder V-type engine.

The maximum torque of the motor is reached at 3.6 thousand rpm, and is 440 Nm. Peak power is reached at 5,400 rpm and equals 286 horsepower.

High-octane gasoline is used for good performance. Fuel consumption averages up to 12.6 liters per hundred kilometers on the highway, and up to 18.8 liters per hundred in the urban driving cycle. The maximum indicator of harmful emissions into the atmosphere is 295 grams for each kilometer of traveled distance.

Tuning

To increase the power of the M62B44TU motor, it is recommended to first throw out the standard intake manifold, replacing it with a modification from the standard version, which is characterized by a greater width of channels.

The installation of more efficient camshafts is also necessary, it is recommended to install 258/258. It is possible to add to this configuration and a sports manifold on the exhaust, as well as to make a competent program adjustment. As a result – the power reaches about 340 horsepower, which is quite enough for traveling in urban conditions. Classic software replacement in this case can not do, as it will not bring much result.

For those who want to get more than 400 horsepower there is also the option of installing a compressor on the power unit. On the automobile market there are a large number of different options that allow you to install all this “miracle” on the standard piston group of the engine, but they cost quite a lot. In addition, you will also have to replace the standard pump, for example, with a Bosch 044. Give the engine a pressure of half a bar and it can develop a maximum power of 400 horsepower, and sometimes even more.

It makes no sense to build a turbo version, as it will not give a special advantage over the compressor, but it costs much more. And in this case, it will be much more rational to move to BMW M5, which is characterized by a large power reserve.

This engine is installed on the following models:

BMW 5-Series (E39)

BMW X5 (E53)
