This engine was produced from 1996 to 2005, during which time it had many trials and joys. The aluminum cylinder block has become a tradition for such power units. Here again the injector was used, which became a stable power system for such apparatuses. Again the motor was produced in the form of the letter V. It had a sufficient number of cylinders of 8 pieces, and each of these cylinders had 4 quality valves. The stroke of the piston here was only 82.7 millimeters, but the diameter of the cylinder reached 92 millimeters. But the compression ratio of this engine was equal to 10. The volume of this version was as much as 4.4 liters. Here at 5400 rpm the power was equal to 286 horsepower. And the maximum torque at 3600 rpm could be 440 N*m. As the main fuel was used at least 95 grade gasoline.

Ecological norms Euro 2-3 gave an opportunity to slightly reduce air and environmental pollution. The consumption of this device on the highway was up to 9.2 liters per 100 kilometers, on the mixed territory this figure increased to 12 liters. But within the city the consumption could reach a record 18 liters per 100 kilometers, which was very disappointing for motorists. The oil in this variant went away at an approximate rate of maximum 1000 grams per 1000 kilometers. The manufacturer recommended to use only 5W-40, 0W-40, 5W-30 or 0W-30 as an engine oil. At one time there could be about 7.5 liters of this liquid in the engine. And it was worth to change it somewhere once in 7-10 thousand kilometers.

When measuring the operating temperature of this power unit, a figure of 105 degrees was obtained. The motor resource in practical conditions will be more than 400 thousand kilometers under the condition of good care, proper maintenance and replacement of consumables. When tuning this variation of the engine, it was possible to get more than 500 horsepower in potential. It was installed on models with the index 540i, 740i, X5, 840Ci. E31, E38, E39, and E53 cars were used in this case. The Range Rover, as well as the Morgan Aero 8 stood out among these standard variants.

Advantages

In 1996, these engines completely replaced all their predecessors. They were refined and modified to get a good result. The predecessor did not give the new engine its cylinder block, because it was completely changed in order to increase the diameter of the cylinders. Nicasil liners were also obtained. And only after 1998, this part began to be made of alusil. The crankshaft became completely modern and was made of steel, it was with a long stroke. Also six counterweights were used. But the connecting rods did not change at all, they had a new diameter, and the quality of the part was commendable.

The head for the cylinder block was similar to the previous one, except that the camshaft characteristics were noticeably changed. The phase and lift had new improved values. The old valves already had a new intake and exhaust diameter. The springs together with the plates were produced in a lightweight version, but the new cylinder-head cover was completely made of magnesium. The timing chain had one row, after the unsuccessful use of two rows, the developers decided to simplify the part. Its resource was within 150 and 200 thousand kilometers of distance. Throttle flaps here were completely updated, the intake manifold became different, but the ignition coils practically remained the same as before. Also, the manufacturers used a thermostat, which could be programmed for convenient indicators. The control system received a new developer, it was the famous Bosch. After 1998, the engine was able to change in technical terms. The system that changed the phases of gas distribution on the intake shaft was used for the first time for such models. The intake manifold and the reduced ducts began to look more harmonious in this variant. The Bosch control system had already received noticeably different characteristics and updated version.

There was another competitor with 3.5 liters, as well as one variant with 4.6 liters, both of which played a notable role in the decline of the above-described engine. The version of the V-shaped character, which appeared back in 2001, a little by little began to oust the described series from the market, and eventually completely replaced it with an improvement in parameters. This motor is evaluated by motorists as very good.

Disadvantages

The engine has a noticeable knock and other unpleasant sounds. Stretched timing chain has become the most important cause of such a malfunction. The shelf life of this part usually ranges from 150 to 200 thousand kilometers, depending on the manufacturer. The chain and tensioner bypass bar so often become the cause of such breakdowns. However, the tensioner itself is not ideal, along with Vanos, whose resource lies within the same limits. It always needs to be checked and replaced in good time.

It was often noted that the gasket on the valve cover leaked profusely. If the element is replaced in time, unpleasant odor and other consequences can be avoided. The cooling liquid in the bath can also leak, to prevent this from happening, the same bath or gaskets on the intake manifold together with the pumps must be properly replaced.

Floating RPMs have often been seen to cause problems with the motor not running properly and unevenly. This turns out to be due to air sucking which is looming in the intake manifold. HVAC breakdowns or high flow with air changes can also be the cause of such unpleasant actions. Sensors with throttle position or clogged throttle plates are less likely to cause this.

After 250,000 kilometers of range, oil consumption will increase significantly. This can be easily solved by replacing the removable oil caps. After 200 thousand kilometers, the unit cushions will also fail, and the alternator will not be able to withstand long with all these features of work. The engine should receive only the correct oil that the developers recommend, the fluids for operation should be of high quality to allow all systems to work long and stable. Constant maintenance, proper care and replacement of fluids will keep your machine intact for years to come.

Modifications

There are not so many modifications of this power unit on the market. As before, the main parameters of difference in them are the maximum torque and power, which received other characteristics. The first indicator will be equal to 420 N*m at 3900 rpm, which will not give such opportunities as the original version. But the power of 286 horsepower here will be achieved only at 5700 rpm. Other indicators are changed only slightly or remain the same, so they do not need to be described again.

Chip Tuning

To increase power in the Vanos variant, a high quality intake manifold would need to be installed, which would have the wide channels from its predecessors. Camshafts with modified specifications would help this process a lot. The customization of the added parts along with the sports exhaust are very quick and precise. After all the operations done, it is possible to get both less than 330 and more than 340 horsepower, which in urban conditions will be more than enough. Standard chipping will not help in any way.

When you need to get power up to and over 500 horsepower, you need to choose the right compressor. Professionals will always tell you the right one and advise you where to buy it, they are available on the market and are often ready to be installed on standard BMW firmware. But their price may seem quite large for simple amateurs, so you will need to spend noticeably on this part. It is necessary to buy the right compressor set and pump from Bosch at a pressure of half a bar you can get both up to, and more than 500 horsepower ideally. To get into the depths of the machine and look for the conditions of the strongest increase in power, you will have to spend too much money. In this case, it is better to choose another engine with much stronger capabilities.
