Bavarians have always pleased the owners of cars of their brand with quality power units, which have a fairly good resource, and stand out with excellent technical characteristics. On the cars of the 7-series BMW you could meet under the hood engines M67D44.
It is a diesel engine, which provides a working volume of 4.4 liters. The layout of the internal combustion engine is V-shaped, with eight cylinders. There is a double supercharger in the form of a turbine, allowing you to get about 329 horsepower of maximum power.
This modification is the second in the line of M67 engines. Engineers made the maximum amount of effort, which made it possible to increase the maximum power by 16%, at the same time from the predecessor it was distinguished by a reduced mass. Production of the engine started in 1998, and was completed in 2009. Assembly was stopped due to stricter environmental requirements, so it was necessary to switch to more modern solutions to reduce the amount of harmful emissions into the atmosphere.

During the development of the M67D44 engine, the engineers of the Bavarian concern were tasked with reducing weight and increasing maximum power. And the set tasks were accomplished, which allowed to increase power by 16 percent, and the weight decreased by 14 percent, compared to the previous lineup.
At the same time, the engineers of the German company obtained such indicators without increasing fuel consumption, which is quite difficult. This was achieved thanks to the installation of a lightweight crankcase. This part was made of aluminum alloy. Also, a positive effect was obtained thanks to the use of a particulate filter in combination with innovative fuel injection technologies.
Disadvantages
As a rule, all engines produced by the Bavarian company, pleases car owners with their high reliability. Often, problems are caused by improper operation and maintenance. But all engines are characterized by certain nuances, and M67D44 is no exception.
If you consider this particular modification, the main problems are caused by the use of low-quality fuel. As a result, you get broken injectors and a failed high-pressure fuel pump. Therefore, be sure to control the quality of fuel that will be used for the engine.
But there are also some maintenance advantages to these power units. By installing hydraulic compensators, the need to adjust the thermal clearances on the valves is avoided. Belts with special design are also used, which avoids maintenance of auxiliary drives from replacement to replacement. Also, the fact that both rows of cylinders can be operated independently deserves special attention. Typical problems are usually not encountered, but occasionally the motor servos that drive the throttle flap can break.
A huge number of drivers complain that the M67D44 has burnt valves, but if you replace the lubricating fluid in time, such problems do not occur. It is also required to be sure to control the oil level, because even the manufacturer assures about the tolerance in the consumption of 800 milliliters for every thousand kilometers of mileage. It is also necessary to be very careful when selecting the oil to be filled into the engine. You can find a huge number of suitable filling liquids in the operating books, as the motors are not very fastidious about the choice of lubricant. Since the motors are characterized by high performance, it will not be possible to use mineral oil, you will have to pay attention to synthetics. Optimal oil characteristics are 5W-40 or 10W-40.
It is best to choose an oil with SN or MB 229.5 tolerances because of the high temperature load on the power unit. It is also worth paying attention to the climatic conditions in your region.
Modifications
The M67D44 is not the only engine in its range, it has a number of modifications. M70B50 is a motor that differs in cylinder arrangement. The block camber is 60 degrees. This was done in order to increase the efficiency of the power unit.
You can also find a modification M73B54, characterized by the installation of a single camshaft. At that time, the Bavarian concern did not apply such solutions. The engine also has a half-cylinder adjustment, aimed at protection against detonation.
The M73TUB54 is an improved version of the M67D44 power unit. The power characteristics of this motor have not been changed. But the reliability has been improved by additional innovations from the technological point of view. The most striking example is the system of generator cooling with the help of liquid. Control of the thermostat was transferred to electronics, which minimized the risk of overheating.
Technical specifications
The exact volume of the diesel power unit was 4423 cubic centimeters, which was obtained thanks to 87 millimeters of cylinder diameter and a piston stroke of 93 millimeters. The compression ratio was 17k1.
For proper operation, only high quality diesel fuel should be used. The engine is equipped with a double turbocharging system to ensure maximum power. The average fuel consumption is about 9 liters for every hundred miles traveled. At the same time, the emission of harmful substances into the atmosphere is 239 grams per kilometer.
Maximum power of the powertrain is reached at 3800 rpm, and is 329 horsepower. Peak torque is achieved at 2,500 rpm and is 7.5 thousand Nm.
Four valves are used on each cylinder, giving a total of 32. This indicates that each cylinder head houses a pair of camshafts responsible for the intake and exhaust valves.
Tuning
The first thing to understand is that M67D44 motors are characterized by good performance even without additional modifications. At the same time, the suitability for improving the output in this engine is very low. The close arrangement of cylinders does not allow to bore them to increase the working volume. The only thing that can help is classic chip tuning and modification of the fuel supply system to the engine.
