The engines in this series have successfully replaced their predecessors in the general market. They usually have 4 cylinders, and started to be produced in 2011. They are used in many modern versions of cars from the famous manufacturer. The motor received a turbocharged supercharger, Vanos and Valvtronic systems. Popular publications even recognized the engine as the best in 2012. Let’s consider the technical characteristics of this power unit.

The volume of this unit is equal to 2 liters, and the cylinder block is made of aluminum. As a power system, an injector was used, it had 4 cylinders. And here on each cylinder there were 4 valves. The stroke of the piston here is 90.1 millimeters, but the compression ratio varies from 10.2 to 11. Maximum power in this version is equal to 245 horsepower at 5000 rpm. The maximum torque is 350 N*m at 1250 to 4800 rpm. As fuel, it is best to use gasoline of 95 or 98 brand. In urban conditions per 100 kilometers of gasoline consumption is 8 liters, on the highway this figure drops to 5.7 liters per 100 kilometers. Oil viscosity should be at the level of 5W-40 or 5W-30. The volume of oil in the engine is about 5 liters, and its consumption is less than 700 grams per 1000 kilometers. Replacement is carried out once every 10 thousand kilometers. The resource of the power unit is more than 250 thousand kilometers. Tuning will help to improve the power to more than 300 horsepower.

BMW N20B20B motors were installed on light sedans, sports coupes or large SUVs. The installation is versatile and reliable. 2 balance shafts are combined here with sprayed steel on the cylinders, forged crankshaft with 4 counterweights. Advantages

The powertrain uses Valvtronic, which helped manufacturers reduce gasoline consumption by 10 percent. Here, an unusual throttle flap has been used to supply air to all cylinders. Air, on the other hand, is supplied to the chambers when an edited intake is applied. The intake valve is applied with an editable height for proper operation. This whole described mechanism is what is called Valvtronic.

Here a turbocharged supercharger and twinscroll system was used. The turbine was fitted with 2 snails of the required size. This enables good torque at different rpm. The engine is easy to drive and responsive.

Dual Vanos helps to change the phases of gas distribution. The system takes advantage of two camshafts on the exhaust and intake valves. This helps in reducing the flow rate and lowering the emission of gas into the air. At idle speeds, the motor’s performance has stabilized and at all rpm levels, the power has improved. But the unit’s reliability and problems don’t stop there. The sealing rings continually deteriorate, backlashes appear and the motor wears out. Dual Vanos reduces consumption, but becomes more reliable because they use an assembly.

Disadvantages

The idle speed sometimes floats. This problem is most often caused by a dirty idle valve. It is standard, but you need to apply a little effort to solve it. This destabilizes the operation of the valves.

The N20B20B engine vibrates due to the old age of the fuel injectors. This malfunction is very frequent. The resource of the injector, however, often ends not in time, which worsens the process of injection of air or fuel mixture. They enter the cylinder with the wrong ratio and violates the dynamics and parameters.

A broken air flow meter leads to ignition delays. This enriches the air and fuel mixtures. Because of this, fuel consumption will increase, because there will be more fuel than needed and less than needed air in the mix.

Electronics can fail under long maximum load. Therefore, using the engine at its maximum capabilities is not necessary. Very frequent oil and gasoline changes will not show the full efficiency of the power unit. It is more correct to fill 98 brand of gasoline and use the oil that is recommended by the developers.

Some motorists claim that the oil supply is poorly implemented. Until 2013, this problem occurred after 100 thousand kilometers. At this time, the liners turn, but the problem is not detected during driving. Only during jamming can it be felt. But after restyling, the manufacturers removed this malfunction. The N20B20B connecting rod does not meet the stated parameters and very quickly comes to failure.

Modifications

The regular native modification is the first and began production in 2011. Here used pressure of 1.15 bar, compression ratio 10, maximum power of 245 horsepower at 5000 rpm. Maximum torque here 350 N*m is obtained at 1250-4800 rpm.

  • O0 are more produced for cars with the 25i index. The developers have reduced its power to 238 horsepower at 5000 rpm. Maximum torque remained at 350 N*m at 1250-4800 rpm.
  • The M0 was launched in 2012, and the compression ratio was 10. Power was at the level of 218 horsepower at 5000 rpm. Maximum torque is 310 N*m at 1350-4800 rpm.
  • The U0 has a compression ratio up to 11, and the pressure here blows at 0.55 bar. There is a small exhaust, and power equals 184 horsepower at 5000 rpm. The maximum torque is equal to 270 N*m. All of the above modifications are produced nowadays.

Chip tuning

The easiest way to increase the model’s output from 245 to 280 horsepower is to apply classic stage one tuning. The second stage involves replacing the intercooler, cold intake and exhaust. All of these changes will help achieve 300 horsepower. N20B20A and N20B20B difference is the reduction in life after a while.

On this model, tuning is not strongly recommended, because it leads to rapid wear of the power unit. The resource of the internal combustion engine in its initial form is 250 horsepower. Therefore, tuning will only help to significantly reduce these indicators. Most likely, it is worth buying another motor, which will not lose resource with tuning.
