The N43B20OL power unit is a motor from the N43 range, which were produced to replace the obsolete N42 models. These are four-cylinder engines equipped with two camshafts, organized according to the DOHC system. Each cylinder has 4 valves, giving a total of 16. The fuel injection is direct, organized according to the HPI system, which allowed to ensure the greatest combustion efficiency in the respective chambers.
Powertrain production started in 2007, and was stopped in 2011. N43B20OL is a modification of the N43B20 engine with a displacement of 2 liters, which differs in torque and power, thanks to the introduction of different software and some design changes.

Disadvantages
The N43B20OL motor is characterized by certain typical faults that also apply to other N43 powertrains. The main faults of such motors are:
- Increased vibration. This is the first sign of clogged injectors. You can try flushing them, but it is better to go to a store and have new parts installed.
- Ignition coils do not have a long service life. The ignition coils do not have a long service life and may be defective if the engine is running on three cylinders.
- Vacuum pump rarely travels more than 80 thousand kilometers. If leakage is noticed, it is necessary to contact service to replace the defective part.
A common problem is overheating of the power unit, so owners of cars with such motors need to constantly monitor the temperature. Internal combustion engines are very demanding to the quality of gasoline and oil used, so it is necessary to use only high-quality substances. Timely replacement of consumable elements, as well as compliance with maintenance recommendations will allow to achieve a fairly long period of engine operation without serious breakdowns.
Tuning
First of all, it should be understood that N43B20OL engines are designed for moderate city driving, so you should not count on a great potential for increasing the output. You can try to change the software and install a sport intake and exhaust. Such actions will give the opportunity to get about 15 horsepower, which is relatively small and will not be strongly felt during driving.
It is pointless to make other changes, as you will not get much performance anyway. The best option is to swap to more powerful powertrain models, for example from the N55 range.
It should be taken into account that the motors are characterized by a fairly large age, so some of them may have already used up their resource, although it is quite difficult to do so. In any case, there are no too big problems with motors, so if there is a choice concerning their purchase, you can lean towards a positive decision.
Technical specifications
The gasoline power unit was installed on the BMW 5-series, and its working volume was 1995 cubic centimeters. This was achieved thanks to a cylinder diameter of 84 millimeters and a piston stroke of 90 millimeters. This solution allowed to provide a compression ratio of 12 to one.
The maximum power of the motor is 170 horsepower, which is achieved at 6,700 rpm. Peak torque can be obtained at 4.2 thousand rpm and it is 210 Nm.
The inline four-cylinder engine can be called economical, as it consumes about 7 liters of fuel per hundred kilometers of travel. When driving in the urban cycle, the consumption increases to 9 liters per hundred kilometers. There is no supercharger in the engine.
