The exact size of the engine is 1995 cubic centimeters with a compression ratio of 16.5 to 1. Engine power, depending on the type of N47D20U1, ranges from 116 to 218 horsepower. The number of revolutions per minute reaches 4.4 thousand. The motor meets the environmental standards Euro 5 – 6. One of two turbochargers is used, either Garret GTB1749 VK or BorgWarner Kp35. The total weight of the engine reaches 150 kilograms. The motor is quite economical, in the city per 100 kilometers of travel consumes about 6 liters. Advantages
Started to be installed in 2007 on BMW in 87 body. It replaced the previously popular M47. The main difference was a lighter cylinder block, and their diameter was also changed. Inside there is a crankshaft with a stroke of 90 millimeters and piston height of 47 millimeters. The head has 2 camshafts, the diameter of the intake valves is 27.2 millimeters, the exhaust is 24.6 millimeters. N47D20U1 is characterized by Common rail injection system. Initially, a Garret turbine was used, which was characterized by variable geometry. The chain is located behind the engine, according to the manufacturer’s claim its life is similar to the motor, but in practical conditions this is not the case. In 2014, the production of N47D20U1 stopped due to the release of a modern diesel analog of the B47 series.
Disadvantages
The motor has a few drawbacks to consider before purchasing the N47D20U1.
- When the timing chain is stretched, noises occur at the rear of the engine. In practice, the timing chain lasts about 100 thousand kilometers. In case of careless driving, the problem will appear earlier. The solution is to replace the chain, otherwise it may break. When replacing the chain, the engine must be removed, which is due to the rear position of the timing chain.
- Noises may be caused by the crankshaft damper, which has a service life of about 110 thousand kilometers.
- Like the engines of the M47 version, swirl flaps are used, which cannot enter the motor. However, due to the operation of the EGR, soot forms on the flaps. To avoid this it is necessary to clean the flaps together with the manifold or install plugs.
Engine overheating may cause cracks between cylinders. Engine life depends on the quality of maintenance, if problems are solved in time, it will last about 300 thousand kilometers. Frequent oil changes and use of high quality fuel will extend the engine life.
Modification
There are several modifications of the N47D20 engine.
- N47D20K0 – is considered the weakest representative of this series of motors of all. It is characterized by a power of 116 horsepower at 4 thousand rpm.
- The N47D20U0 has 143 horses and a maximum torque of 300 Nm. It is characterized by DDE 7.0 ECU. Supercharging is 1.5 barr.
- N47D20O0 – modification received 177 horsepower. A different engine control unit was used – DDE 7.1. It is characterized by piezoelectric injectors.
- N47D20T0 is one of the most powerful modifications. It is characterized by the use of two turbochargers and increased pressure. Maximum power is 204 horsepower.
- N47D20K1 began production in 2011, replacing the previous K0 version. It is characterized by the use of DDE 7.1 ECU. It consumes less gasoline. Power remains the same – 116 horsepower.
- N47D20U1 replaced its predecessor in 2011. IHI turbocharger is used. Features more power at medium speeds.
- N47D20O1 replaced the O0 in 2010. It has a maximum of 184 horsepower and uses the MHITF035HL turbine. A 163 horsepower version of the engine was also present.
- In the N47D20T1, the intake and exhaust have been modified and the DDE control unit version 7.3 has been used. The power output is 218 horsepower.
Chip tuning
A firmware upgrade on the 118D will be sufficient to increase horsepower. This will increase the power by 40 to 55 horsepower. The 20d version has the possibility to “pump” up to 220 horses. When using a standard turbine on a 116 horsepower engine, the power increases to 200. When tuning the best version of the motor it is possible to achieve 280 horses.
