Advantages
The engine from the new series has replaced its equally popular predecessors. The previous evolutions are quite unlike it, because it is completely new. The cylinder block is made of aluminum and magnesium to emphasize the lightness of the design. The Cinder Block has also become lightweight and the crankshaft has received a lot of changes. The cylinder head has been updated by the developers and has again received a system that changes the phases of gas distribution on both shafts. This dual Vanos is meant to refine and improve the performance of the engine.
Valve lift has also received a new system in order to improve fuel economy and add noticeably to the output. The timing drive provides a chain, which got the application of length on the intake itself and applied manifold. The required injectors are also installed in the cylinder head, and the latest system from the global developer Siemens is used to control the unit. The unit is used for cars with the index 25i or 23i. Already after two years, the engine received a replacement in production. And further other versions were also removed from production in connection with the release of the latest models.
Disadvantages
The main problem is that there is a huge oil consumption. The removable rings are too thin and they get dirty very quickly. The caps are almost impossible to remove for cleaning. Modifications
The U1 was produced from 2005 to 2008 and is the base engine of the series. The intake manifold reduces power here to 177 horsepower at 5800 rpm. Maximum torque here is 230 N*m at 3500-5500 rpm. It is suitable for BMWs with the 23i index.
The regular mod was produced from 2009 to 2011, it has a completely different intake manifold. Its output is 204 horsepower at 6400 rpm. The maximum torque here at 2750 rpm is 250 N*m. This version is also available for BMW with the index 23i.

Chip tuning
The motor is not much adapted to refinements of various types. It would be better to buy a powerful car. But in case of tuning you can use a Chip.
