Advantages

This is a power unit belonging to the N52 engine lineup, which is another engine with a displacement of 2.5 liters. The N52B30 engine also belongs to this lineup. A distinctive feature of this lineup is that all six cylinders of the motor are located in one row. In 2005, this motor was first installed on cars of the Bavarian brand, and its main purpose was to replace the M54B25 engine.

Although virtually all M-series engines were simply slightly modernized and redesigned versions of their predecessors, this engine was completely new. The engine was based on a lightweight cylinder block, using a magnesium-aluminum alloy. The design also utilizes a new weight-saving cylinder block and a redesigned crankshaft with a redesigned crankshaft structure.

The engine design also includes a new cylinder head, which features the well-known Double-VANOS system, mounted on two camshafts, which changes the timing. Also, in addition to this, there is the Valvetronic valve lift height modification system. The combination of these solutions has made it possible to obtain reduced fuel consumption. The timing mechanism is chain-driven. The intake manifold used in the power unit is DISA with variable length. The fuel injectors are mounted directly in the cylinder head.

The replacement for the engine was released already 2 years after the start of its production. The Bavarians introduced the N53B30 engine as a replacement. But despite this, the motor was installed on cars for many more years, and the complete stop of its production was made only in 2011.

Disadvantages

The most common problem that gives owners of cars with this motor under the hood certain difficulties is the increased consumption of lubricating fluid. This is because the BMW N52B25OL uses very thin oil rings, which lose their original properties very quickly. Increased wear of the oil caps is also one of the reasons why the engine eats oil. The most unpleasant thing is that problems with oil consumption begin to appear at mileage up to 100 thousand kilometers, which is quite unpleasant. It is necessary to check the condition of the nodes, and if necessary, install new oil caps and rings. Along with this, it is worth paying attention to the condition of the crankcase ventilation valve. Motors that were produced since 2007, and are characterized by the installation of a black cap, do not suffer from such problems.

You can simply ignore this problem, add the necessary amount of oil and continue to drive as it is. But this will not do any good, as the catalytic converters will quickly become clogged with carbon deposits. As a solution, you can buy new catalytic converters, but it will cost a lot. An alternative is to buy inexpensive flame arrestors.

A ticking sound that occurs when the engine is running is also a common problem. As a rule, owners of engines manufactured before 2009 are faced with such malfunctions. Also, a characteristic feature is that the sound is heard only before the operating temperature is reached. This is a design feature that does not entail negative qualities for the power unit.

The problem of floating revs is also quite common among owners of cars with N52B25UL under the hood. Most often, the cause of the problem is a broken Valvetronic system, a worn out Vanos valve, or a failed flow meter. Improper maintenance is one of the causes of Vanos failure. It is necessary to try to use only quality oil, and change it more often than once every 20 thousand kilometers. Repair of the system is to flush the valve. If this did not bring any results, then it will have to completely replace it.

Technical specifications

The exact working volume of the inline six-cylinder motor is 2497 cubic centimeters. During its operation, 174 grams of harmful substances per kilometer are emitted into the environment. The average consumption of the N52B25UL is 9.5 liters of gasoline for every 100 kilometers.

The maximum power of 177 horsepower is reached at 5800 rpm. If the engine is revved up to 5,000 rpm, peak torque of 230 Nm can be achieved.

This engine is installed on the following models:
