The N62 series power units are large-sized, high-volume engines that replaced the previous generation M62 and belong to the new NG (New Generation) series. The reliable and powerful motor has been recognized by motorists due to its good technical characteristics and high environmental standards.
Production of the engine lasted for three years from 2001 to 2004. Engine N62B36 V-shaped eight-cylinder with a working volume of 3.6 liters. The gasoline engine is capable of producing up to 272 horsepower at 6,200 rpm. The familiar combination of Valvetroic and dual VANOS is inherent to this series. The N62B36 engine has an advanced lightweight aluminum cylinder block with cast iron liners inside. This design allows for trouble-free overhauls. Inside the block is an updated crankshaft with forged connecting rods. A special feature of the engine is the right angle arrangement of the cylinders.
The cylinder head is similar in structure to the 4.4-liter power unit. The difference is the reduction of the intake valve size to 32 mm on the N62B36. The diameter of the exhaust valves has not changed and is still 29 mm. In addition, the cylinder head is equipped with the Valvetronic 3 valve lift height modification system. The thickness of the steel cylinder-head gaskets has become 6 mm. On the intake and exhaust shaft is a modified BiVANOS / DualVANOS variable valve timing system. The timing system uses a chain.
Thanks to numerous changes in the engine design, the manufacturers have achieved lower fuel consumption, reduced the amount of harmful emissions into the environment, increased power characteristics, torque parameters, as well as acoustics of the power plant.
The average engine fuel consumption is 10.7 liters per 100 km in mixed mode. It is recommended to fill the tank with quality gasoline not lower than AI95. The engine was installed on two versions of BMW: 735i E65 and E66 735 Li.
Three years after the beginning of production of this motor, it was replaced by a four-liter unit N62B40, developed on the basis of N62B36.

Disadvantages
Due to the similar engine design with N62B44, their problems and sore spots are completely identical. After 100,000 km of mileage, increased oil consumption is observed. The reason lies in the oil caps. In the absence of timely repair after another 100,000 km there are malfunctions with oil rings.
RPM floating is another problem with the N62B36. Also, on the 735 BMW, the car may be tripping at idle speed. The engine starts to malfunction because of the ignition coils failure. To eliminate the problem, it is necessary to replace them, then the engine will work in normal mode. Also, the causes of trolling N62B36 can be found in the air intake, flow meter or valvetronics. According to reviews of owners of BMW 735, there is often an oil leak from the crankshaft oil seal, or the effectiveness of the sealing gasket of the generator housing has decreased. In this case, it is necessary to carry out the replacement of the valve cover gasket bmw 735 N62B36.
Chip Tuning
In order for the N62B36 engine to be able to squeeze out many times more horses, the easiest option is to perform chip tuning. The essence of the event is to buy a sports exhaust system, replace filters and customize the ECU. Chip-tuning N62B36 allows you to increase the power of the engine up to 300 horses. Trying to further modify the car is not worth it, it is easier to buy a more powerful model.
To prolong the life of the N62B36 motor, as well as to avoid the above problems, you should carefully monitor the quality of fuel, oil change, timely maintenance, replacement of consumables.
