The year 2008 was marked for the German concern by the release of the first turbocharged 8-cylinder engine with V configuration. The release of this power unit was aimed at displacing the N62 range, to be more specific, the N62B48 engine. These engines were distinguished by the development of a new cylinder block, for the production of which was used aluminum. Complementing this block was a lightweight crank mechanism. The cylinder head was also finalized. The main changes were a complete change in the location of the valves. The cylinder head, installed on these power units, was also equipped with an EGR system. This allowed to change the phases of gas distribution on the intake and exhaust shafts.

The timing drive was also slightly redesigned and received a chain drive. The superchargers have also been changed. Garrett MGT22S turbines were used. These turbines worked in parallel, and their location was slightly different from the classic one – they were placed in the cylinder camber. When fully operational, their working pressure was 0.8 bar. The electronic control unit on this power unit is Siemens MSD85. The N63B44TU3 version appeared in 2012, and it marked a restyling of the old powertrain model. The main changes in this version were the pistons, which have a modified bottom shape. An adaptive crankshaft and redesigned connecting rods were also a difference.

The need to install the Valvetronic 3 system necessitated a complete redesign of the cylinder head. This provided a change in the working height of the intake and exhaust valves on the engine. The TVDI direct injection system was also an addition to the powertrain. The camshafts on this engine were replaced with newer, improved versions.

Advantages

VANOS, the exhaust gas recirculation system, has also undergone a certain number of changes, which allowed to change its adjustment range and significantly expand it. Certain modifications were also made to the fuel supply and coolant recirculation system. The intake and exhaust system was unchanged. The pumping elbow of the supercharger has also received some modifications, though in insignificant quantity. The old electronic engine control unit was replaced by a modified version – Bosch MEVD17.2.8.

All cars of the concern having 50i index became the cars envisaged for installation of N63B44TU3 power units. This motor became the basis for the new N63 range, which gradually displaced them from the automobile market.

Disadvantages

N63B44TU3 motors do not stand out from the general flow of engines of the German concern, they, like all engines, consume a lot of oil. Piston rings quickly lose their properties, and their grooves are also rapidly contaminated. It is these breakdowns that affect the increased consumption of working fluids. A distinctive feature is that oil can consume even new motors, the mileage on which does not exceed 50 thousand kilometers. There is only one way out of this situation – major engine overhaul, providing for the replacement of rings.

The cylinder block of this engine was manufactured using alumina. This metal has never been particularly resistant to oxidation and corrosion. Increased oil consumption by this engine can also be caused by corrosion. It is much more difficult to fix this problem – you will have to buy a new or contract cylinder block.

After long periods of downtime, owners of such engines may encounter another problem – water hammer. During the production of engines several times different injectors were used, which did not quite meet the requirements, and this is one of the reasons for this trouble. The problem is solved very simply – the injectors are replaced with one of the latest BMW modifications.

This engine is installed on the following models:

BMW 8-Series (G15)
