The S14B23 engine, from its introduction in 1986 to the present day, continues to be a model of German quality. It has very compact dimensions. It was developed for the BMW E 30 M3. The M10 block was used as the basis for this engine. Characterized by high power and reliability, it was often subjected to tuning by people involved in the development of custom vehicles.

The first production of the S14 engine took place in 1986. The engine was presented in two variations. In addition to the 2.0-liter model, a 2.5-liter model was also available. Since this engine was developed for the BMW M3, it is not surprising that it was these car models that made these motors popular among athletes involved in professional and illegal racing.

Advantages

The S14B23 BMW M3 features a four-valve cylinder head. It is distinguished by a multi-throttle intake. For each cylinder here it is provided in a separate form. In this model, there is also a device that allows control of the exhaust and crankshaft, which has eight counterweights.

The S14 engine does not have a hydrocompensator. Therefore, it is necessary to perform periodic valve adjustment.

As a rule, engines of the same model were produced with the same parameters. But this is not the case with the S14 engine. Depending on which market it would be sent to, its power was either reduced, or, on the contrary, increased. So, in Italian cities it was possible to buy such an engine only with reduced power. The presence of this aspect was conditioned by the peculiarity of taxation, which changed significantly when the engine power increased. To reduce the engine power, the piston stroke was shortened to 72.6 mm. But in America, the engines were delivered exclusively with high power.

Of the features of this engine should be highlighted, the presence of:

  • of the catalytic converter;
  • of the modernized camshaft;
  • cylinder head, which was produced in a similar manner to the s38;
  • inlet valve bores, they were up to 37.5 mm;
  • enlarged to 32mm and exhaust valve ports.

In operation, the engine is unpretentious and works easily even with poor quality fuel. But this feature is not reflected in any way in the duration of the operational life of the motor parts. On average in the city, about 11.2 liters of gasoline are consumed per 100 km. When driving on the highway, fuel consumption is significantly reduced, and is from 7 liters. The engine works on oil of two brands, SW 30 and 40. On average, about 900 grams are consumed per 1000 km. The technical fluid should be replaced every 12,000 km.

Disadvantages

Engine S14B23 belongs to reliable models, working without failures until the manufacturer’s specified warranty life of exactly 350,000 km. But from what will be used more often driving, a malfunction in the engine can occur earlier. The following problems can appear:

  • The appearance of idle breakdown. This type of failure can occur at any stage of engine operation. The main cause of its manifestation is a low fixation of the throttle on any of the cylinders. And also a clog on the sensor controlling the idle speed;
  • Difficulty in starting the engine. This malfunction is caused by a defect in the operation of the anti-theft device, which was not noticed at the factory by the manufacturer. Elimination of this trouble is carried out by two methods. Either by re-flashing the equipment in the service station or by disabling the alarm system;
  • increase in vibration load. This aspect appears when the engine injectors fail. Ignoring this failure always leads to a shortening of the engine’s operating period;
  • late ignition indicates a problem in the air flow meter. Troubleshooting consists of replacing filters and adjusting the equipment.
