S63B44O0 is a 4.4-liter gasoline-powered powertrain. Thanks to the installation of a double supercharger in the form of a turbine, it develops a maximum power of 555 horsepower. Motors were produced specifically for installation on the X5 from the Bavarians.

Advantages

After the production of M5 cars in the E60 body was completed, the M GmbH division decided to abandon the S85B50 engines, and the V configuration with ten cylinders in general. The decision was made in favor of eight-cylinder motors, which were equipped with two turbochargers. The civilian, but powerful N63 was taken as a basis for the production of motors. The cylinder block, connecting rods and crankshaft were taken from it, and the pistons were replaced with new ones for the appropriate compression ratio.

The cylinder head was taken as the basis from the N63B44 motor, which was slightly redesigned. The intake camshafts remained unchanged. The exhaust camshafts were slightly modified. The valves along with the springs remained from the predecessor. The inlet valves were given a diameter of 33.2 millimeters and the exhaust valves were 29 millimeters. A chain from the previous modification was used to drive the timing mechanism.

The intake system succumbed to minor changes, in particular the exhaust manifold was changed to a new version. Turbines were replaced by Garrett MGT2260SDL, which worked on twinscroll system, which allowed to provide pressure of 1.2 bar. Siemens MSD85.1 was used as the electronic control unit.

Disadvantages

Power units are characterized by a classic problem for Bavarian engines – increased oil consumption. First of all, this problem can be caused by contamination of grooves on the pistons, as well as loss of ring properties. It is noteworthy that this can be detected even on engines that have passed about 50 thousand kilometers. The malfunction can be eliminated only with the help of engine overhaul.

After the motor has been idle for a long period of time, it may suffer a hydrostroke. This is usually caused by unsuccessful piezoelectric nozzles. For all the time of production of engines, they were changed very often. To avoid such troubles it is necessary to install injectors from the latest version on the power unit.

Also, ignition misses are not an uncommon problem. The spark plugs can be diagnosed as the main source of this problem. The problem can be remedied by replacing the plugs with a modification for M-series engines.

In addition, you may experience increased lubricant consumption due to increased corrosion of the alusil. Only a new cylinder block can solve the problem.

Also, the fact that the turbines are located between the cylinder rows can be considered a big disadvantage. This ensures a high concentration of temperature in the cylinder block camber. And just in this area pass the lines that provide oil supply to the turbines. As a result, owners of such motors get clogged spigots, which prevents the flow of oil and the blowers fail. Increased temperature in the camber also leads to rapid wear of cooling system connections and vacuum tubes.

In order for the motor to last as long as possible, it is necessary to keep a close eye on its technical condition and to undergo regular maintenance. This approach, in combination with prompt replacement of unsuccessful components, makes it possible to avoid serious problems.

Technical specifications

Inside this motor provides 4,395 cubic centimeters of working volume, which are achieved thanks to the fact that it is eight-cylinder, and is made in a V configuration.The cylinders provide a diameter of 89 millimeters, and the pistons run at 88.3 millimeters. This makes it possible to achieve a fairly high compression ratio for gasoline engines of 9.3 to one. There are four valves on each cylinder, which provides for the use of a pair of camshafts on each of the heads.

For normal operation it is recommended to use gasoline with octane number not lower than 95. Under this condition and measured driving, the engine consumes about 14 liters of fuel for every hundred kilometers traveled. Emission of harmful substances into the atmosphere is 258 grams per kilometer.

Thanks to the installation of dual supercharging, the motor can reach a maximum output of 555 horsepower, which is developed at 6 thousand rpm. Peak torque can be felt if you spin the powertrain to 5,650 rpm, and it will be 680 Nm.

Tuning

It should not be forgotten that the S63 is a turbocharged motor, so problems with its modernization are very rare. It is enough to replace the standard software with Stage 1 firmware, and as a result, the engine will be able to produce about 680 horsepower.

For those who like more power, you can try replacing the standard exhaust with a sports exhaust system, as well as adding downpipes. You will also need to make the appropriate software adjustments. The result is an increase in output of up to 750 horsepower.
