Due to the fact that each new model of the M3 was heavier than the previous model by as much as 200 kg, the engines produced at that time were not suitable for this iron horse. For this reason, BMW developed a different kind of eight-cylinder engine, which in 2007 the whole world learned about. The development of the unit was made on the basis of S85B50. Many spare parts were changed, and some, in general, were completely removed from the engine. Thus, two cylinders from V10 were unnecessary in the new model. Instead of them, the contract engine S65B40 was equipped with V8 cylinders, the working volume of these elements is 4.0 liters.

As in the S85B50, the cylinder block used in the model being developed on its basis was of identical design, with a cylinder spacing of 98 mm. The connecting rods and pistons used in the s65b40 are identical to those used in the M5 engine. The cylinder head was also not subjected to any changes. But the Double-VANOS timing system could not be avoided. The oil pump was removed. From the S85 engine in the new unit also remained identical valves and springs. On the inlet, 8 throttle valves are used.
Siemens MS S60 is used as the control unit. The injectors used in the engine have a capacity of – 192 cc. It is because of the presence of these features, the unit easily develops 420 hp.

This engine was developed for use in the BMV M3. In addition to the E90 body, it was also installed in the E92 and E93 models. But folk craftsmen, this engine actively began to be used in improving the qualities of other car models. Advantages

Despite the fact that the s65b40 unit was developed on the basis of an obsolete engine, it still became the owner of good characteristics:

Disadvantages

Despite the fact that the S85 used as a basis helped the developers to create a more powerful engine, the faults in this engine turned out to be identical to those in the S85 unit. Thus, in S65B40 problems begin after a short period of engine operation. As a rule, after 80 thousand kilometers, there is an urgent need to replace the connecting rod liners. This procedure should be performed regularly, each time, as soon as after the change of these elements the mileage is 80 thousand kilometers.

Of course, you can take your time to change them, but in this case, the risk of serious troubles with the motor operation increases. Though not so frequent, but still repair, requires and Vanos. If you do not perform its repair in a timely manner, then soon the engine will be observed unpleasant rumbling. Despite the presence of these shortcomings, it is safe to say that this engine is not bad, and is able to work for a relatively long time. But provided that during operation it is regularly serviced and not subjected to overheating.

Tuning

Of course, in addition to its installation, it will be necessary to change filters and firmware. As a result, the motor will give up to 450 hp and a serious growl, which will give the vehicle special colors. You can increase the power of the engine even more with the purchase of 286\286 rasperdvals. These can be used to increase power to 480 hp.

But it is possible to maximize the power of the machine by purchasing strokers that increase the displacement to 4.4 liters and the piston stroke to 82.7 mm. The 4.6-liter strokers are also used to improve power, with 94mm pistons and an 83mm crankshaft. New connecting rods are also installed. These types of kits allow to increase the engine power many times, and leave behind the mark of 500 hp.

Having bought and installed a compressor on the engine, kits from ESS can be quickly overcome many kilometers without any problems from the side of the unit. VT2-625 is considered to be a good kit. With its use, the engine can produce up to 625 hp. In order to prevent the unit from malfunctioning, in addition, you should install ESS crank liners. It is possible to increase the power by more than 700 hp. But to give the engine this level of power you will have to spend more money and show better skills.
