BMW M5 F90

The online presentation of BMW M5 vi F90 took place on 22.08.2017. The official introduction of the sports car took place a month later at the Frankfurt Motor Show. In October, its sales in Europe began, and domestic BMW dealers started receiving orders for the new BMW M5 F90 in November.

The most serious difference from all generations of M5 is all-wheel drive. The cars of the first 5 generations were rear-wheel drive. The model BMW M5 F90 has increased in dimensions, became more powerful than its predecessors and received new modern equipment. Specialists of sports division of BMW “Motorsport GmbH” participated in its creation. As a result, the “E” class sedan is a family car, a business car, and a racing car.

Appearance

The exterior of the BMW M5 cannot be confused with the bodies of previous generations of “eMocs”. It is beautiful and assertive at the same time. It has more aggressive bumpers and wide fenders. It is completed with large-sized air intakes, disks R19/20, and behind you can notice a quartet of paired spigots. Concern’s engineers decided to refuse from “fog lights”. They were replaced by diffusers of blowing to better ventilate front brakes. Aggressiveness of the car is given by relief sidewalls with muscular chassis arches.

Buyers are also offered differently styled exterior sport mirrors and a new body color, MarinaBayBlue.

Dimensions of the BMW M5 F90 are as follows. In length, the sports sedan has stretched to 4.96 (compared to its predecessor, an increase of 55 mm) meters. The width of the car is 1.90 (plus 12), height – 1.47 (plus 16) meters. Wheelbase of M5 F90 is 2.98 (plus 9) meters. The ground clearance of the car is 132 (plus 12) mm.

The weight of the sports sedan was also reduced. German engineers tried to reduce the weight of BMW E60 and BMW 61, but they failed. Therefore, when creating the M5, specialists of the concern applied the modular platform CLAR and used lightweight materials. The hood with stiffening ribs was created from aluminum, the roof of the car – from carbon fiber, a lithium-ion battery was installed in the trunk. A special system was created for the exhaust. These and other innovative systems allowed the Germans to reduce the weight of the sedan to 1.85/1.93 tons.

Interior

The sportiness of the sedan emphasizes the interior of the car. The BMWM5 F90 has a new three-spoke multitouch steering wheel with relief outlines. On it, red-colored keys immediately catch the eye. These are M1 and M2.

The dashboard has a different graphic, with a warning from the indicator on the right when the rev limit is reached. The inserts are made of carbon fiber, pedals have metal plates. The door sills have been modified. Projection display allows you to display on the windshield data navigation system. Its area on the M5 F90 has increased by 70%.

The seats are tightly upholstered in Merino leather. They have a range of electric adjustments. For an extra charge, you can get fully electrified multifunctional seats, which have much better lateral support and a special structural shell.

High level of comfort on the rear sofa. Three adult passengers will not feel discomfort. There is enough space for both legs and head.

Other interior elements fully correspond to the interior of a standard “five”. The white interior looks especially beautiful at night. This can be judged by photos of BMW M5 F90.

Trunk volume is 530 liters.

In addition to the standard version, there is also an exclusive one. BMW M5 F90 firstedition cars are produced in limited edition (400 copies) and their body has a color of dark red metallic. The equipment is a full package.

The M Special version of the 2018 BMW M5 F90 comes with R20 wheels, parking assistant, door closer, four-zone climate control, Harman Kardon acoustics, smart key and the ability to charge various devices wirelessly.

The consumer can order different options. For example, you can get the Mperformance package on the BMW M5 F90. With it, the car will have a different bodywork and a different interior design.

In the BMW M5 F90 Competition Edition version, the car’s power will increase to 625 “horses”. Compared to the “regular” M5, it accelerates to 100/200 km/h in 3.3/10.8 sec. The exhaust system – double chrome pipes. There will be a particulate filter. This additional element will reduce CO2 emissions into nature. The engine will be combined with an 8-speed “automatic” M Steptronic.

Another set, BMW M5 F90 ramon performance, has already a power of 790 (!) hp. This figure was achieved after the processing of the power unit. Therefore, the acceleration of the sports car is 2.7 sec. This car can seriously compete with Bugatti’s Veyron hypercar even when equipped with standard turbines.

In 2019, a BMW M5 F90 competitionpackage version is expected. Such a car is expected to have 616 hp, improved suspension and sporty M exhaust. Production of the car is scheduled to start in July, and the first deliveries will begin in August. BMW M5 F90 black edition can also be ordered.

Technical specifications

Now let’s see what are the specifications of the BMW M5 F90.

The M5 F90 is powered by a 600-horsepower, V-twin, eight-cylinder unit with a displacement of 4.4 liters and direct fuel injection. The BMW M5 F90 has two turbochargers and a reinforced crankshaft. The air cooling is indirect, the lubrication system is optimized, the exhaust system is improved and lightened. Hence the power of 600 “horses”. Note that tuning BMW M5 F90 and refining the engine to stage 2, will increase its power to 750 hp.

The engine BMW M5 F90 combines with an 8-speed automatic. There is a technology “M XDrive”. By default, all traction goes to the aft axle. However, if necessary, the power can be transferred to the front chassis. This function is performed by a multi-plate clutch. Transmission of the new “eMka” allows the driver to choose 3 modes of potential distribution/operation of the stabilization system. These are 4WD/MDM, 4WD Sport/DSC and 2WD/DSC off.

In the last variant the sedan becomes rear-wheel drive, in the first two cases it is possible to move with all-wheel drive. In addition, Sport mode improves the car’s handling.

The acceleration of the BMW M5 F90 sports car is rapid. From 0 to 100 km/h the car reaches in 3.4 sec. and from 100 to 200 – in 11.1 sec. The maximum speed of BMW M5 F90 is 250 km/h. By ordering the V-Drives package, you can raise the speed limit without a limiter to 305. Fuel consumption in the city / on the highway / mixed cycle is 14.5/8.2/10.5 liters. CO2 emissions are 241 g/km.

The size of the fuel tank is 68 liters.

The car was equipped with two aluminum suspensions: front independent (MacPherson) on double wishbones and aft multi-lever. The steering wheel had Sevrotronic adaptive steering.

The braking system of the sports sedan is worth mentioning separately. In the “base” the car is equipped with 6-piston brakes, which have calipers of blue color. Option – ceramic brakes, lightened by 23 kg. They improve braking dynamics of the car and allow it to bear serious loads.

Comparison with competitors

The M5 F90 has few rivals. We can note Panamera Sport from Porsche, GS-F from Lexus, Mustang from Ford and Challenger from Dodge. However, the real competitors are two. They are the RS7 from Audi and the E63 AMG w213 from Mercedes.

That’s the data we’re going to compare.

The cost of the M5 F90 is higher. It is more expensive than RS7/E63, approximately by 200/700 thousand.

It has a slightly weaker motor: 600 hp vs. 605/612. The volume is the same as Audi’s, but smaller than Mercedes’: 4.0 and 5.5. Slightly better acceleration than Audi, but the same as Mercedes (3.4 sec. vs. 3.7).

All cars use AI-98 fuel, but in its consumption BMW is inferior to its competitors. RS7/E63 is more economical than F90 by 1/1.5 liters per 100 km in mixed cycle. The capacity of the fuel tank is greater in Audi. 75 liters against 68/66 liters in BMW/Mercedes.

The BMW is 75/20 kg lighter than the Audi/Mercedes, but it has 8 mm less ground clearance: 132 vs. 140 for its competitors. It is also slightly inferior in terms of “hold” volume: 5 liters – RS7 and 10 – E63.

All cars have a speed limit of 250 km/h.

And a bit about options. All three cars have:

• Onboard computer;
• Air conditioning;
• 8 airbags;
• Central locking;
• Power windows on all doors;
• ABS and stability control systems;
• Heated exterior mirrors;
• Heated seats;
• Steering wheel/seat adjustment;
• Audio system.

The M5 F90 doesn’t have “fog lights” (we explained their absence above), while its competitors have metallic body color.

In our opinion, in the confrontation BMW M5 F90 vs Mercedes AMG E63s, the advantage of the competitor of the “Bavarian” emerges. The E63 AMG S has a more powerful motor, larger volume, lower fuel consumption and higher ground clearance. It is not inferior to M5 F90 in acceleration and in maximum speed. Finally, E63 sedan is much cheaper.
