Advantages

Power unit S63B44Tx was developed specifically for installation on M5 cars from the Bavarians, and is an improved version of its predecessor S63B44TU, which received from owners a sufficient number of positive feedback. The motor received a number of new changes that allowed it to achieve such great power figures. The main ones include:

  • A heavily modified Valvetronic system that maximized the performance of the superchargers and the motor as a whole.
  • Revised Double-VANOS system to achieve lower fuel consumption without reducing displacement.
  • Installation of new Garrett MGT2260DSL compressors to provide 1.5 bar working pressure.

This allowed the BMW F90 with this engine under the hood to accelerate to the first hundred in just 3.4 seconds. At the same time, the maximum speed reaches 305 kilometers per hour, which is a lot for a serial civilian car.

Disadvantages

The classic problems for the Bavarian engines are not absent in this case. The main problem with S63B44Tx power units is oil consumption. This is caused by the fact that the grooves in the pistons are quickly clogged, resulting in the loss of ring properties. But this is not related to the age or mileage of cars, as the fault can be observed in cars with a mileage of about 50 thousand kilometers. The solution to the problem is to replace the piston rings in combination with a complete overhaul of the engine.

But it’s not just the rings that can cause these problems. Alucil, of which the cylinder block is made, is highly corrosive, so increased consumption of lubricant can also be caused by this phenomenon. Even a major overhaul will not help – the entire block will have to be replaced.

When cars with such motors are idle under the hood for a long time, the owners may encounter an equally unpleasant problem – water hammer. During the production of the entire line of S63 motors, Bavarian engineers could not find suitable piezoelectric nozzles, so this trouble can occur because of them. It is better to replace the problematic unit at once without waiting for the appearance of malfunctions. Any injectors from the latest revision of the motor line will do.

The ignition system often malfunctions and starts to show skips. The cause is classic for such situations – problems with the spark plugs. For these motors, it is best to use spark plugs from the M-series sports modifications.

Technical specifications

The displacement of the S63B44Tx engine is 4,395 cubic centimeters. This figure is provided thanks to a piston stroke of 88.3 millimeters, as well as eighty-millimeter cylinders, which are arranged in a V configuration of 8 pieces. The direct fuel injection system in combination with these indicators allows you to get a compression ratio of 10:1.

For maximum performance, it is recommended to use only high-octane gasoline, AI-98 grade. The average consumption is about 11 liters for every hundred kilometers driven. At the same time, about 245 grams of carbon dioxide are emitted into the environment for each kilometer driven.

In the range from 5.6 to 5.8 thousand rpm the engine reaches maximum torque values, which are 750 Nm. If you spin the engine up to 6000 revolutions, you can get from it the output of 600 horses, at speeds of 6700 it is possible to remove about 625 horsepower.

Dual supercharging in the form of turbochargers is used for maximum performance. The engine is fitted with a start/stop system. There are 4 valves on each cylinder.

Tuning

The great potential for increasing the output of such motors is provided by the presence of two turbines. Therefore, there are no problems with tuning. The maximum output of 680 horsepower can be achieved in a very simple way – a classic software change.

It is also possible to get about 750 horses. For this you will have to do a little bit of work, but the result will be tangible. To do this, you need to install downpipes, as well as replace the standard exhaust system with a sports modification. The final stage of all this will be software tuning.

This engine is installed on the following models:
