The B47C20O1 is an inline four-cylinder diesel-powered power unit with a two-liter displacement. Thanks to the installation of an additional supercharger in the form of a turbine, it was possible to achieve a power of 190 horsepower. This motor can be found under the hood of the BMW X2.

The exact volume of the power unit is 1995 cubic centimeters. This was achieved thanks to cylinder diameters of 84 millimeters. The motor is designed to work with two camshafts, as it has 16 valves (4 valves per cylinder).  The piston stroke of 90 millimeters ensures the achievement of a compression ratio of 16.5 to 1.

Maximum power of 190 horsepower is achieved at 4 thousand rpm. When the engine is revved up to 2.5 thousand rpm, peak torque of 400 Nm is achieved.

The use of diesel as a fuel has not had much effect on the environmental performance. Emissions from the engine are about 126 grams of pollutants per kilometer traveled.

Distinctive features

B47C20O1 is a power unit with four cylinders, the operation of which is accompanied by a supercharger. The turbine is arranged according to the usual for Bavarians TwinPower Turbo system. The presentation of this motor took place in 2017 along with the display of the new BMW X2 F39. The main purpose of introducing this motor was to replace the line of N47 engines, characterized by reduced fuel consumption, and to improve the performance of cars on which turbocharged diesel engines were installed.

Compared to the N47 engines, the B47C20O1 has certain advantages, which are the availability of a large number of common spare parts with other engines from BMW. Almost all parts fit from diesel B37s with three cylinders. This significantly reduces repair costs and simplifies and expands the possibilities when repairing and modernizing powertrains.

Like the B37 diesel power unit and the two B38 and B48 gasoline motors with three and four cylinders respectively, the B47C20O1 engine belongs to the family of internal combustion engines that were presented in 2014. These are innovative new-generation motors that incorporate a large number of advanced solutions to improve their performance and fuel economy.

Just like the N47 motor before it, the B47C20O1 engine has two camshafts providing four valves on each cylinder. A pair of intake valves allowed for greater performance, while the exhaust valves do a great job of blowing the twin turbo.

For fuel injection, a Common-Rail system is used, working in tandem with electromagnetic injectors, whose performance is achieved at a pressure of 2,500 bar. This allows more torque to be achieved, which has subsequently resulted in a significant increase in power.

A twin turbine with variable geometry capability also makes an additional contribution to the overall performance of the motor. If the turbos are spun up to their maximum performance, it becomes very difficult to catch up with a car with this powertrain under the hood.

The resource of such motors is quite long with moderate operation and normal maintenance. B47C20O1 power units, as well as other diesel engines, are very capricious to the quality of diesel fuel used, so it is necessary to choose it carefully. It is also worth changing the oil in time to prevent premature wear of the motor. The replacement interval is from 5 to 7 thousand kilometers, depending on driving style.

This engine is installed on the following models:
