B48A20M1 is a gasoline power unit from the Bavarians, which provides two liters of working volume. The motor is equipped with an additional supercharger in the form of a turbine, which allows it to develop a power of 192 horsepower. The development of this engine was produced specifically for BMW X2 cars, on which they began to be installed in 2017.

The B48 engine lineup from the Bavarians are four-cylinder gasoline power units with additional superchargers in the form of a turbine. The new generation of “B” engines provided for manufacturing entirely from aluminum alloys. The assembly and introduction of motors of this range was planned as a replacement for the obsolete N20 range.

Advantages

A parallel can be drawn between the B48A20M1 powertrain and the three-cylinder B38 engine lineup, as they are also offered to customers with features provided by BMW EfficientDynamics technology:

  • The supercharging of additional air into the powertrain is organized on the turbine on the Twin Scroll principle.
  • The Valvetronic system is used, which makes it possible to change the valve stroke depending on the crankshaft speed.
  • Double VANOS allows you to change the timing of the intake and exhaust valves.
  • Direct fuel injection into the engine is arranged by the High Precision Injection system.

The B48A20M1 powertrain offers greater efficiency compared to PSA’s similar range of motors. In addition it is characterized by a more reliable design, the predecessor H-series does not possess this quality. There are no accurate statistics regarding the specific reliability of this powertrain and its true operating life. It takes time to test it in usual conditions, so the owners of cars with this engine have only one thing to do – wait.

Features

Similar to the three-cylinder power units of the B38 range, the B48A20M1 motors are suitable for transverse and longitudinal mounting. This fact plays a very important role for the development of future vehicles from the Bavarian company.

The cylinders have a diameter of 82 millimeters. There are four valves on each cylinder. The presence of 16 valves indicates that two camshafts are used for operation. The piston strokes 94.6 millimeters, which provides a compression ratio of 11 to 1.

The maximum power of the motor is 192 horsepower, which is achieved at a relatively high speed of 6 thousand rpm. Peak torque stops at 280 Nm, which can be obtained if the engine is revved up to 4.6 thousand rpm.

For normal operation and optimal performance it is necessary to use gasoline with octane number 95. If quality fuel is selected, the average consumption per hundred kilometers is about 6 liters. Naturally, with an aggressive driving style, this figure can increase significantly.

The power unit is equipped with a start-stop system. This allows you to comfortably drive a car with such a motor under the hood, as well as save fuel. In addition, the presence of such a system significantly reduces emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere to 134 grams per kilometer of mileage. The system does not cause any discomfort, and some people do not notice it at all while driving.

In general, such engines do not cause critical problems for owners. You only need to treat them well and service them in a timely manner. For maintenance, it is better to choose only official services. Similar to other power units and from the Bavarians, these motors are very demanding to the quality of fuel and lubricants used, so you need to choose high-quality oil, as well as gasoline.

This engine is installed on the following models:

BMW X2 (F39)
