BMW are one of the leading manufacturers in the field of automobiles. This forces them to constantly look for new solutions and improve old technologies to maximize fuel economy. The constant tightening of environmental frameworks is also an additional push. BMW is also branded as a leader in the production of power units of maximum quality, which have a relatively long service life. This also contributes to the need to constantly search for more modern solutions aimed at improving the performance and quality of motors.

The B57D30C engine is a modification of the standard engine of the B57 range, which operates thanks to six cylinders with a total working volume of three liters. The development of this engine was launched specifically to replace the previous N57 range of power units, which had become obsolete.

The B57D30C diesel engine included a TwinPower Turbo system, which provided additional air injection in the form of a pair of turbines with the ability to change geometry. The engine was also equipped with a Common Rail system, providing direct fuel injection into the engine. A distinctive feature was also the presence of a single common fuel ramp. When the engine first entered serial production, it provided the most power in the line of six-cylinder diesel units.

Description

In the middle of 2008, the race for maximum economy indicators was rapidly gaining momentum, and the Bavarian concern was presented the motor B57D30C, which provided for an in-line device. These engines are still installed on modern modifications of cars from Germans, which can testify to their reliability. This power unit has quite a large number of positive qualities that make it popular.

Low fuel consumption is the main factor that makes the B57D30C popular and in demand to this day. It was in the race to reduce fuel consumption that the Bavarians developed this powertrain and introduced it to the world, before putting it into mass production. The average fuel consumption figures depended on the driving style, and were within these limits:

  • During city driving, the power unit consumes about 6.5 liters of quality diesel fuel for every hundred kilometers.
  • About 5 liters will be consumed per hundred kilometers traveled while driving on the highway.
  • Moving in a mixed cycle of movement fuel consumption per hundred kilometers of travel will not exceed 5.4 liters.

The positive qualities of the engine also include the fact that in the race for economy, environmental standards have not been lost. The B57D30C engine was not subjected to any claims regarding the emission of harmful substances into the atmosphere. The power unit fully complied with all requirements of Euro 5 and Euro 6 standards.

According to manufacturers’ assurances, and in accordance with the engine passport data, oil consumption in the engine is present, but in an insignificant amount – only 700 grams per every thousand kilometers. According to recommendations from experts, it is best to pour lubricant 5W-30 or W-40. But the second option is used much less frequently.

Official representatives recommend to change oil after every 7 thousand kilometers of mileage. But it is necessary to do so only in case of measured operation of the engine, aggressive driving style or traveling on bad roads. It is better to shorten the interval between changes. It is also necessary to constantly check the lubricant level and make sure that it does not fall below the minimum mark.

Manufacturers have stated the wrong resource of the engine, but it is for the best. The motor is able to run longer, here the Bavarians were a little bit wrong. With proper maintenance, measured operation and filling the tank with only high-quality diesel fuel and good oil, the motor runs about 300 thousand kilometers. This adds potential for all fans of tuning of such power units.

The B57D30C diesel engine is characterized by relatively high reliability, which sets it apart from other engines in its class. The high build quality is also a positive indicator affecting the level of confidence in the power unit.

Thanks to the in-line arrangement of cylinders, the entire unit has been designed to be simple, so it can be easily serviced by yourself. In case of breakdowns, it is better to seek help from specialized services to avoid further damage to the engine.

This engine is installed on the following models:

BMW X4 (G02)

BMW X5 (G05)
