The predecessor of the two-liter engine N43B20 was N42B20. Production was carried out from 2007 to 2011. The engine has a direct injection system, and there is no Valvetronic valve lift control system, which increases fuel consumption, but at the same time significantly increases the level of reliability of the car. Changes have been made to the pistons and the compression ratio increased to 12. The engine is controlled by the MSD 81.2 system from Siemens.

Disadvantages

The most common engine malfunctions and faults include vibrations due to the need to replace the injectors. Floating and trolling revolutions become a consequence of the ignition coil. Every 60,000 km the vacuum pump leaks, which should be replaced in time. It is necessary to monitor the cooling system, as the N43B20 engine is prone to overheating. It is important to use quality gasoline and oil. Low-quality oil can curdle, as the N43B20 engine operates at a higher temperature. In this regard, it is necessary to use machine oil recommended for this model of BMW. Timely replacement of necessary elements and appropriate care will help to prolong the life of the engine.

The two-liter version of the N43 engine lineup is poorly tuned, just like the N43B16. To help increase the power at least by 15 horses can only re-flashing and installation of a sports exhaust. Improvement of characteristics is possible only with the purchase of a more powerful model of BMW with engines N54-55.

Modifications

The N43B20 motor had three varieties:

  • N43B20K0 – the unit has power as a 1.6 liter motor (122 hp at 6,000 rpm). The value of power was strangled by the program method. The engine was used in the following BMW models: E81 116i and E87 116i.
  • N43B20U0 is a two-liter engine with an output of 143 horsepower. The powertrain variation is found on the following BMW models: E87 118i, E90 318i.
  • N43B20O0 – the most powerful modification in the presented range, reaching 170 horses at 6700 rpm. It was installed on BMW models E87 120i, E90 320i, E60 520i.

The N43B20 engine became the basis for the creation of the N43B16 version with a smaller volume, but the crankshaft and pistons were changed. Along with this engine, there was an active production of other engines, which became followers of the N42 family: N45B20S, N46B20.

The N43B20 was replaced in 2011 by the 1.6-liter turbocharged unit N13B16.
