There were 3 important events in BMW in 2007. The concern restyled the E81 and 87 hatchbacks and presented to the general public the BMW E82 coupe model. It is a two-door compact four-seater car, also belonging to the cars of the 1st series. The realization of the BMW E82 began in the spring of 2008. The manufacturer decided that such a “wheelbarrow” is unlikely to carry seedlings to the dacha. Therefore, the weakest gasoline/diesel engine has a volume of 2 liters.

Consumers could buy the coupe only in 135i (more powerful version) and 128i versions. The concern sold almost 150 thousand cars. The production was completed in late fall 2013. The coupes were replaced by cars with the F22 index, which belong to the next generation.

Appearance

The two-door coupe is characterized by a long front, a rearward-sloping interior, and a short stern. The BMW 135i E82 was equipped with the M aerodynamic kit. Therefore, the powerful body of the two-door coupe was combined with unique design elements. In the front part of the car, the radiator cladding catches the eye. It is designed in the form of “nostrils” of BMW. Headlights with a chrome frame are characteristic features of all models of the concern. The dark rack is glazed. Therefore, it creates an impression that the surface is made of glass. The element called “Hofmeister bend” gives additional dynamism to the body. Bending at an angle, the roof line ends in the aggressive stern of the car.

The luggage compartment of the BMW 1 Series Coupe was fitted with a spoiler. The “L” shaped headlights gave the E82 a sporty low look. In their block, BMW designers decided to insert light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to distinguish the car at night. To the advantages of the car can be attributed the presence of adaptive stop-signals, working in two stages, so the car is provided with a high degree of safety.

Adaptive xenon headlights are an option for the 128i. These come with fog lights to make driving at night/cornering safer. There are two lights on each daytime running light to improve driver visibility in different lighting conditions.

The color scheme consists of 9 (3 are standard) colors, but one, Sedona Red Metallic belongs only to the coupe body.

Interior

The BMW 1 Series E82 has an interior design with smooth curves. The interior of the coupe is solid and made of high-quality materials. The design of the front panel features energetic surfaces. The top is dominated by black, the bottom can be designed in three (beige, gray, black) colors.

The panel integrates a control console for the climate, information and entertainment systems. The iDrive is integrated into it. This is the controller for the optional steering system. Pearl-gloss galvanic coating has been applied by BMW specialists to finish the glove box/door handles, decorative inserts of the leather multitool and other interior elements.

In the “base” coupe is equipped with 2 comfortable seats. There are buttons for seat heating. The design of door upholstery repeats armrests with inserts, embedded in the side upholstery and created either from artificial leather or fabric. The color balance between exterior and interior is maintained through 4 upholstery methods: one in fabric, one in leather, and the last two in a combination of the two. By combining these upholstery with the 3 standard interior colors and 9 trim options, a harmonious solution is achieved.

The finish of the decorative slats assumes 6 versions:

  • Aluminum;
  • Walnut Tree;
  • Patterned Poplar;
  • Cashmere Silver;
  • Titanium;
  • “Black Diamond.”

Engine

Let’s move on to the technical characteristics of BMW 1 Series installations. Different modifications of motors were installed on the BMW E82. Which ones are better, you can judge by their indicators.

There was a choice among gasoline engines. There were 4 of them: N43/46/52/54, but the diesel unit was one, N47. All E82 engines were equipped with a coolant pump. This increased the performance of the unit, improved fuel economy and reduced its loss.

An exceptionally powerful engine, N54 with a 2nd turbocharger, was installed on the 135i. Its volume was 3.0 liters, power – 306 “horses”. Therefore, the coupe could accelerate to a “hundred” in 5.3 sec. and develop a top speed of 250 km / h. Fuel consumption in the range of 6.4-12.1 liters / 100 km. Therefore, this motor was considered the optimal option for cars of this class. In addition, according to the owners’ feedback, tuning fans, on the JB4 chip and with modifications on the intake/mechanics, brought its power to 480 hp. These power units are combined with six-speed gearboxes. There is only one automatic transmission, the GA6HP19Z Steptronic, and five manual transmissions: GS6-45BZ/17DG/17BG/37DZ/53DZ.

The gasoline motors feature Double Vanos valve technology. The diesel units have a Brake Energy Regeneration system with a Start Stop button. It utilizes braking energy by regenerating it.

All motors of the concern are produced according to the principle of less fuel, more dynamics. We should add that since 2014, sales of the BMW I8 model, complete with a gasoline motor and an electric motor, began. However, even in 2017/2018, not everyone can buy this auto. Availability is limited.

The suspension has a complex system. At the front it consists of double joints made of aluminum, at the rear – of light steel (it is independent).

Electronics

In order to get perfect control over the car, all cars except the top model are equipped with the EPS system. This electric power steering system has a Servotronic function that generates steering force based on the speed of travel. The system improves at low and high speeds – comfort and steering precision. Optional active steering, which adapts the gear ratio of the multifunction steering wheel with NPB leather to the speed of the car.

The “base” also has systems in place:

  • ABS – anti-lock brakes;
  • ASC – traction control. The drive wheel will not spin when starting off;
  • CBC – controlling the braking of the car on corners. The car stabilizes;
  • DTC – control of driving dynamics. Increased slippage of the drive chassis is permitted.

They are all part of DSC, the Dynamic Stability Control system. How it all works is shown in the video. We also note the Adaptive Lighting system, which is part of the Lighting Package, and AUX for BMW’s OEM stereo.

OEM navigation system E82 assumes a monitor of 8.8 inches, Hard-disk for 8 GB, built-in 3D navigation, the ability to connect a TV tuner. There is support for cell phones with Bluetooth interface. In E82 you can lock/unlock the car without actively using the identification transmitter. Because the system of comfortable access is installed.

Additionally, a conversion kit can be purchased to integrate an additional illumination function into the fog lights. The turn signal lamps will automatically activate when the turn signal is activated, illuminating the side area around the car. It is also possible to retrofit the steering wheel with gearshift paddles.

Small features

The load capacity of the vehicle is about 600 kg. Different tools can be used to repair the machine. Among them is the BMW Valvetronic spring fixture. It can be used to remove/install the compression springs of the coupe’s spring mechanism.

Options

All Coupé cars are fitted with 6 airbags: side airbags are located in the backs of the front seats and frontal airbags are activated by gravity. This allows for optimal protection of everyone in the passenger compartment and reduces the risk of injury in a side impact. The head is protected by side airbags located in the roof panel. Crash-optimized seats with padded backrests/headrests reduce the possibility of injury if the Coupe is struck from behind.

Add to this the inertia seat belts and pedals that automatically deform in a frontal collision and reduce the risk of leg injuries.

Restyling or BMW 1M E82.

In 2011, the E82 model was restyled. However, it was actually a new model, 1M E82. It was presented at the end of 2012 at the Detroit Motor Show in the USA.

Wide wheel arches, R19 disks, front/rear aggressive/diffuser bumper, bi-xenon headlights and 4 round-shaped exhaust pipes immediately catch the eye. In order to improve the aerodynamics of the car, the Germans used curtains. The air flow, coming out through the hole and blowing the wheel, acts as a curtain, reducing unfavorable turbulence near the wheel arches. Charged “one” offers in white, black and orange colors. If we compare its dimensions with 135i, it has lengthened by 5, widened by 53 and grown by 13 mm. And due to the new roof its weight has been reduced by 35 kg. The lightweight construction weighs almost 1.5 tons.

The interior of the 1M features a sport steering wheel and similar seats included in the M Sport Package. The dashboard has changed, and the leather upholstery has received orange stitching. Options are climate control for two zones, Internet access (ConnectedDrive system) Harman Kardon audio system with USB audio interface, GPS, equipped with an 8.8-inch monitor. Under the hood of the 1M is a 340-horsepower unit with a three-liter displacement. It combines with a six-speed manual and accelerates the car to 100/200 km/h. in 4.9/17.3 sec. The speed limit is limited to 250 km / h., fuel consumption per 100 km in the combined cycle – 9.6 liters. The option is a 7-speed sporty automatic transmission. To it you can add AFS, an active steering system that helps with parking.

The BMW EfficientDynamics intelligent approach is used to increase power and engine output and reduce CO2 emissions. The 1M’s suspension has been reconfigured. The vehicle’s high-friction differential is controlled electronically. This allows for a quick 50:50 load and torque distribution between the chassis at the rear. The German manufacturer positions the car as a sports car, but it has a lot of electronic aids.

A state-of-the-art brake energy recovery (BER) system with Auto Start Stop function is used. It allows you to save fuel. The 1M E82 can be fitted with safe Run Flat tires. These tires allow the vehicle to continue driving even if the tires are not pressurized!
