Two-liter gasoline engine from BMW. Produced from 2004 to 2012. It has an in-line structure, 4 aluminum cylinders with 4 valves on each. It is characterized by an injector feeding system. Piston stroke is 90 millimeters. The diameter of each cylinder is 84 millimeters. The exact volume of the motor is 1995 cubic centimeters. Power ranges from 136 horsepower to 170 with a torque of 180 – 210 Nm. It is recommended to refuel with 95 fuel. It meets Euro 4 – 5 standards. Average fuel consumption in the city per 100 kilometers is 10.7 liters, on the highway about 5.6 liters, in mixed mode the motor consumes 7.4 liters. It is recommended to use oil 5W-30 or 5W-40. It is required to change every 100 thousand kilometers of mileage. The volume of oil in the engine is 4.25 liters. Each change requires 4 liters. In practical conditions, the engine life is more than 250 thousand kilometers.

Advantages

The motor was based on the N42B20. The new version used different balancer shafts, changes were made to the intake manifold system, and the N46B20 uses a different timing tensioner. Other plugs and alternator were used. Valvetronic system is installed. A different camshaft is used. In 2007 the exhaust camshaft was modernized. The engine was used in 18i and 20i cars.

Disadvantages

All owners report high oil consumption. This is explained by the use of low-quality oil sealing caps. Over time it is necessary to replace the oil rings, approximately after 50 thousand kilometers. Low-quality oil causes problems with Valvtronic, Vanos, oil pump. It is required to use oil recommended by the manufacturer. Then it will be possible to avoid serious breakdowns and large financial expenses.

There is vibration at idle speed. The problem is solved by cleaning the gas distribution system. Noise is possible after 100 thousand kilometers of mileage. It is explained by a stretched timing chain. After 50 thousand kilometers, the valve cover gasket starts to leak, the vacuum pump fails. To avoid problems, the vehicle must be serviced in a timely manner. In this case, the engine will not cause great difficulties.

Modifications

N46B20O0 was produced until 2007. Characterized by a power of 143 horsepower, torque is 200 Nm.

There was also a variation of the N46B20OU2. A simplified intake manifold was used. Power is 136 horsepower. The simplified version of the motor has a torque of 180 Nm.

Another variation until 2007 is N46B20U1. Torque is also 180 Nm, power – 129 horsepower.

N46b20O1, is characterized by a system of added air supply. Hence the high power – 150 horsepower, torque remains the same – 200 Nm.

The analog of the previous one is N45NB20, it differs in the cylinder head cover. It has a modernized exhaust system, and the engine management system has also been changed. It has a power figure of 170 horsepower with a torque of 210 Nm.

Chip tuning

You can increase the power with a wicked firmware with a low drag filter. The motor gives out 10 horsepower more, which is strongly felt during driving. It is also possible to purchase ready-made compressor kits, with them the power of the car will be more than 220 horsepower. However, this will require a large financial investment.

This engine is installed on the following models:

BMW 1-Series (E81)

BMW 1-Series (E87)

BMW 3-Series (E90)

BMW 3-Series (E46)

BMW X1 (E84)

BMW X3 (E83)
