Presentation of compact crossover BMW X1 in E84 body was held in mid-October 2008. It took place at the motor show in Paris. A year later, its serial production began. This car was assembled by Germans on the conveyor belt of the plant located in Leipzig. Cars intended for the North American market were produced in Mexico, and for the Asian market – in India and China. Since 2012, the crossover began to be produced in Russia, at the plant of the concern, built in Kaliningrad.
Appearance
According to experts who made a review of the BMW X1 E84, the exterior of the auto of the first series X1 turned out to be ambiguous. The crossover is created on the platform used for cars 3-Series of the concern. Probably, German specialists decided not to create competition to the older X3. They managed to unify various components and units of the car, which reduced its cost in the market.
Studying photos of the BMW X1 E84 one can note that the body turned out to be universal-shaped. In front there is an expressive bumper and elegant optics xenon. Between headlights of BMWX1 E84 there are large “nostrils”, under them – “fog lights”. On the side – large wheel arches and an elongated hood line. At the stern there is an original bumper with a twin exhaust pipe. Stylish LED lights, “fog lights”, and on the roof – a fin.
According to experts, the X1 E84 is a crossover in theory. In practice, it is a four-wheel drive passenger car. This is confirmed by the reviews of the owners of the BMW X1 E84. In classic Bavarian cars you have to sit low, and here everything is quite high. This improves the view, and the compact dimensions made the car quite maneuverable. And a little about dimensions of BMW. In length, the parketnik stretched to 4.45 meters. The width of the car is 1.8, height – 1.55 meters. Wheelbase of X1 E84 is 2.76 meters. The ground clearance of the car is 195 mm, weight depends on the equipment and varies in the range of 1.51-1.66 tons.
Interior
The interior of the BMW X1 E84 crossover is classic and resembles the interior of the three cars. The only difference is in the location of the monitor, recessed in the torpedo (in the three it is remote) and in the width between the seats. Finishing is perfect, with elements of glossy wood. The plastic from the bottom/top is hard/soft, the BMW X1 E84’s three-spoke multifunction steering wheel is quick to warm up and easy to grip. The seats warm up quickly, even in diesel models (it usually takes a long time to warm up)
The only disadvantage of the manufacturer is that there is no way to control the suspension. In Germany and Europe, the roads are ideal, but in Russia they are far from it. The suspension is a bit stiff and it is felt on domestic roads. The seats are comfortable already in the “base”. They become more comfortable in Sport configuration. There is a retractable roller under knees, and seats receive strengthened support from the side. The driver’s seat can be adjusted in 8 directions. However, the drives are mechanical.
There is enough space in the rear for two passengers. But if the front seats are moved back a little, the knees of the rear passengers will rest on their backrests. The backrests of the seats can be adjusted to 11 positions.
The BMW X1 E84 has a trunk volume of 420 liters. This figure can be increased by 60 units if the second row seats are moved forward. The maximum indicator of the luggage compartment is 1350 liters. It can be obtained by folding down the rear sofa.
Equipment
The BMW X1 E84 has the basic equipment:
- R17 light alloy wheels;
- Electric exterior mirrors. They have integrated turn indicators (after restyling) and are body-colored;
- Aft LED optics;
- “Fog lights.”
- Heated seats;
- Leather steering wheel;
- Onboard computer;
- USB communication devices;
- Air conditioning;
- Professional radio with CD and MP3 player with six speakers and two-line screen;
- Illuminated glove compartment;
- Cupholders on the console;
- Door “pockets.”
For an additional fee, the crossover can be equipped with leather interior, rearview camera, rain/light sensor, electric front seats and their position memory, electric sunroof, heated steering wheel, Harmon Kardon audio system, parking autobrake, Bluetooth system and others.
If individuality is required, the xLine/Sport Line configurations can be selected.
Electronics and security
The BMW X1 E84 18is has an excellent safety record.
In the “base” the car has 6 airbags. Two of them are frontal: one each for the passenger and driver. Side airbags are embedded in the backs of front seats. There are curtains for head protection on all seats, for child seats – Isofix fastening. There are several important systems in the standard equipment. The first two are DSC/DTC, which provide dynamic stability/drag control. The third is the ABS anti-lock braking system. It is complemented by CBC, which monitors braking in corners. It starts to work if the driver applies the brake sharply when cornering.
There’s one more thing that comes standard. This is a system that assists the driver when descending a mountain.
Therefore, in 2011 Euro NCAP crash tests, the crossover received the maximum five stars.
Technical specifications
Now let’s break down what the BMW X1 E84’s technical specifications are.
The BMW Group installs various power units on all production cars. The X1 E84 is no exception. At the beginning, let’s see what kind of gasoline engines the BMW X1 E84 has. The base engine is a four-cylinder 150-horsepower motor with a volume of 2 liters. It allows the crossover BMW X1 E84 18i to accelerate to a “hundred” in 9.7 sec. and move at a top speed of 202 km/h. Average fuel consumption per 100 km is 8.2 liters. CO2 emissions are 191 g/km. This engine on the crossover 18i 2.0 at 150 hp is combined with a 6-speed “manual”. But for an additional fee the gearbox can be replaced by a 6-speed “automatic” Steptronic.
The second unit is a two-liter 184-horsepower turbocharged motor. With it, the car accelerates in 7.4/7.8 sec. and moves at a maximum speed of 220/215 km/h. Fuel consumption is 7.1/7.7 liters. CO2 emissions – 165/179 g/km. These are the figures for rear-wheel drive/full-wheel drive cars. This engine is combined in the base with a 6-speed manual. Option – 8-speed “automatic” Steptronic. The flagship is a two-liter 245-horsepower unit with turbocharging and Valvetronic system. Acceleration of the car takes 6.1 seconds, “maximum speed” – 240 km/h. Fuel consumption is 7.9 liters. CO2 emissions – 183 g/km. Transmission – in base with 6-speed manual gearbox, option – 8-speed automatic transmission Steptronic.
Now for the diesel units.
The BMW X1 E84 2.0 d is equipped with two engines that have a third-generation Common Rail fuel system and intelligent turbocharging. The first motor has a power of 184 “horses”, the second one has 218. Engines work in pair with 6-speed “manual” or 8-speed “automatic” Steptronic. The crossover, equipped with the first / second unit, accelerates in 8.1/6.8 sec., its top speed – 215/230 km / h., fuel consumption – 5.5/5.9 liters. CO2 emissions – 145/154 g/km.
Three-liter power units were not supplied to Russia.
The size of the fuel tank is 61 liters.
A little about what oil to use in the BMW X1 E84. It is the oil that protects the powertrain from premature wear. During use in the BMW X1 E84, the engine oil loses its properties and needs to be changed. It all depends on the type of engine. We advise you to use products of world manufacturers: Mobil, Shell, Castrol, etc. The recommended oil fill volume for BMW X1 2.0 E84 is 5.2 liters. What oil to pour in the transfer case and in the automatic transmission? The optimal option for the transfer case is BMW 83 22 9 407 858 “ATF D-III” gear oil. If it is not available, any Dexron III can be a substitute.
If the “automatic” is from GM/ZF company, Dexron VI/SHELL ATF M 1375.4 or ZF Lifeguard 6 is suitable.
The 2011 car was equipped with two suspensions: front independent (MacPherson) on double wishbones and aft multi-lever suspension. The steering wheel had Sevrotronic adaptive steering. All chassis were equipped with ventilated disc brakes with ABS system.
Difference between restyling and prerestyling
In the summer of 2012. The BMW X1 E84 underwent a restyling.
The cars coming off the assembly line since July have the following changes in the exterior. The front optics became xenon, aft optics – LED. The “fog lights” have a new bezel. Germans have changed the shape of the radiator grille and slightly enlarged it. Rough plastic, “decorating” the front bumper from below, disappeared.
The turn indicators were moved from the fenders to the mirrors. Spectacular wheel rims have been introduced. In the lower part of the car at the stern, the overlays with glossy sills were added. The ground clearance of X1 E84 has been seriously reduced and amounted to 179 mm.
Two-liter diesel engines appeared.
However, various changes can be made by tuning BMW X1 E84. It will reduce fuel consumption, increase engine power and other characteristics of the crossover. You can use kess equipment to improve the car’s performance.
Problems
At the beginning, let’s note some weaknesses of the crossover:
- Poor noise isolation in models with a diesel unit;
- Tight interior;
- Weak door seals;
- Stiff suspension (felt on bumps);
- Open to the mud is the rearview camera with sills.
The BMW X1 E84 has some problems and common sore spots. It is noted that there is no jack with spare, oil noise and engine temperature sensor, expensive tires and maintenance, small glove compartment, uncomfortable seats, poor behavior in snow, lack of cruise control. No option to disable the start/stop button.
Car owner reviews also say that pressure sensors may not indicate a puncture, and coolant may leak somewhere.
Competitors
The main competitors of X1 E84 are German cars Tiguan (Volkswagen), Q3 (Audi) and Japanese CX-5 (Mazda), Outback (Subaru).
Let’s see which car is better, the Tiguan or the X1 E84. The comparison will involve all-wheel drive models with an automatic transmission and a two-liter gasoline-powered engine.
BMW is more powerful (184 vs. 180 hp), and 46 kg lighter (1590 and 1636). The Bavarian also wins in fuel consumption, 7.1 liters vs. 8 liters. Transmission type in X1 is 8-speed “automatic”, in Tiguan – 7-speed “robot”. Volkswagen accelerates a little faster (7.7 and 7.9 sec.), it has a higher torque (320 vs. 270 Nm), a larger volume of “hold (515 and 420 liters) and clearance (200 and 179 mm).
However, Tiguan is inferior to X1 E84 in price. It is more expensive by 200 thousand with a tail.
In 2015. The X1 E84 replaced the second-generation car, the F48, on the assembly line.
