Advantages
This engine has been installed for the famous manufacturer’s cars since 2007, replacing its well-known predecessor. Here for the first time a lightweight cylindrical block, cast iron liners, 2 balance shafts and an excellent cylinder diameter were used. The block has a forged crankshaft with normal stroke piston and forged connecting rods. Piston compression height and compression ratio are at the correct level. All of this has helped to achieve the necessary displacement for performance. Two camshafts are on the head with 16 valves. The diameter of the exhaust and intake valves with the thickness of the valve stem form parameters that are pleasing to motorists.
The direct injection system utilizes a turbocharged supercharger and intercooler. The turbine at first stood the old one with editable geometry. The timing drive had chains, which were located behind the engine. The resource of this chain is calculated for the full life of the power unit, but in fact the durability is less than everyone thinks and states. The recirculation valve is used for exhaust gases, the flywheel consists of two masses and a control unit. Versions with other volumes were not as efficient, and their data did not allow the same success that the described motor had. In 2014, the engine began to be smoothly replaced by the following versions.
Disadvantages
Noise often occurs at the rear of the engine. It is usually caused by an overtightened chain on the timing chain, the shelf life will be about 100 thousand kilometers in practical conditions. Often the problem is caused by the fact that the driver does not pay attention to the necessary replacement, because there can be a breakage. The replacement of this chain can be bad for diesels, it requires a complete removal of the engine, and the chain is located on the rear part. In the powertrain before 2009, the replacement of the chain is done with the crankshaft.
Some sounds start due to the crankshaft damper, which lasts about 100,000 kilometers. The damper vortices are still located in the intake manifold as before, but now they don’t hit the engine itself as often. The EGR system can cause the flaps to become covered in fouling. You need to plug the EGR valves, and the flaps with the manifolds are better cleaned or removed to install plugs. For proper operation of the powertrain, the control unit needs to be flashed for precise operation.
Overheating the engine, however, usually results in cracks forming between the cylinders of the block. They can be welded, but it is quite possible that it is necessary to replace the cylinder block without chipping. The resource of such turbines is equal to about 200 thousand kilometers or more.
The engine resource will depend on operation, and in case of careful attitude it reaches the mark of 250 to 300 thousand kilometers. Engine problems can occur so often due to infrequent oil changes, use of non-original oil, use of bad fuel, improper maintenance and fast driving.
Modifications
- K0 was produced from 2007 to 2012, it is the weakest version with the famous turbine. Power here is 116 horsepower at 4000 rpm, maximum torque 260 N*m at 1700-2500 rpm.
- The U0 came out from 2007 to 2013, it had 143 horsepower of power at 4000 rpm. And the torque was 300 N*m at 1700-2500 rpm. There was an ECU, turbocharged compressor, 1.5 bar pressure, solenoid injectors.
- The O0 was produced from 2007 to 2013, it had a power output of 177 horsepower at 4000 rpm. Maximum torque of 340 N*m is achieved at 1700-3000 rpm. The control unit and turbine produce 1.55 bar of pressure. Piezoelectric injectors are also used here.
- The T0 also came out in 2007, and ended production in 2013, this engine is the most powerful in the lineup. It used two turbocharged compressors, the pressure here was 2 bar. Fresh exhaust, piezo injectors, ECU was used for the first time. Power here reaches 204 horsepower at 4400 rpm, maximum torque is 400 N*m at 2000-2250 rpm.
- The K1 was released from 2011 to 2015, it replaced its predecessor and received an updated turbo. Here, consumption was reduced by 3 percent, while power was 116 horsepower at 4,000 rpm. Torque was 260 N*m at 2500 rpm.
- The U1 replaced its predecessor between 2011 and 2015 and received a turbocharged supercharger. Power here was equal to 143 horsepower at 4000 rpm, maximum torque is 320 N*m at 1700-2500 rpm. The engine became more powerful at medium speeds, received Euro 5 and Euro 6.
- The T1 is a good modification that replaced its predecessor and got new turbos. Here, the exhaust and intake were modified, and the control unit was improved. Power was 218 horsepower at 4400 rpm, while maximum torque was 450 N*m at 1700-2500 rpm.
- The U1 was used exclusively for Mini Coopers from 2011 through 2014.
Chip tuning
To improve the powertrain’s output, you can flash it to a 118d or 116d with E90 or E87 bodies, this will help add 35 to 50 horsepower. The 20d, on the other hand, sometimes goes up to 210 or 220 horsepower. The top unit improves and up to 240-250 horsepower. Sometimes it is possible to increase this indicator by 60-70 hp. It is best to use a good firmware or downpipe.
