On 25.10.2013, the concern showed a limited number of people its new car, BMW F22. At the beginning of the next year, it was seen by the general public. It took place in the USA, at the motor show in Detroit. Then the car was shown in Beijing, where the 13th Motor Show took place. In the spring of 2014, sales began and the BMW 2 Series Coupe appeared on the automobile market. The cars with the F22 body replaced the E82 models of the 1-series, which were produced from 2008-2009 to 2013.

Appearance

In the streamlined body design, you can clearly see the features characteristic of all BMW cars, and in particular, the coupe. Because the concern uses a unique concept in its creation. It consists in a long hood, low silhouette, doors with frameless glazing, brightly expressed trunk, stretching roof line, which smoothly flows into the stern of the car.

However, the BMW 2 series Coupe has a changed radiator grille, modified taillights and different headlights (Adaptive LED headlights). The exterior of the car is made attractive by the original aerodynamic dodger. Compared to the E82 model, the F22 body has changed dimensions. Length/width has increased by 108/26 mm, but the height has remained the same. According to the owners’ comments, the interior has become a little more spacious.

Buyers are offered bodies in three body styles.

If you order the Modern line variant, the consumer will get alloy wheels R17 (optional V-spoke R18 light alloy wheels), radiator grille with 11 slats, bumpers with decorative inserts of brushed aluminum. The interior will successfully combine light design with aluminum elements.

For fans of sporty style, the manufacturer from Bavaria offers Sport Line design. The dynamism of the car is expressed in shiny black design elements. The owner of this package gets exterior mirrors, bumpers and radiator grille with 8 bars of special development. Plus exhaust pipes covered with black chorus, and R17 light alloy disks (optionally R18 with double spokes).

In the interior of the coupe one can immediately notice the inscription “BMW Sport”. The sporty direction of the car is emphasized by the glossy black trim with red illumination. There are sports seats and a similar leather multi steering wheel. The interior elements are in red-black contrast.

A more serious sporty atmosphere is demonstrated by the M Sport Package. The sport suspension is complemented by the main body element, the aerodynamic dodger, which includes:

  • Bumpers;
  • Side skirts;
  • Alloy wheels R17 Double-spoke 460M (optional – similar R18 461M)

The sporty styling of the coupe is also emphasized by the individual gloss black lines around the mirrors/windows. Complementing the look are the exhaust pipes and radiator grille, which has chrome trim and 8 baffles. Colors are white/red painted, sapphire black, blue/grey/white/silver metallic. The interior of F22 with this package differs from the base configuration by front sport seats, original sills, footrests, leather multitool, gearshift paddles on it, as well as different types of interior trim.

Interior

We have already done an overview of the interior with packages. Here let’s look at the basic equipment. Abandoning all the above-mentioned packages, you will get a leather steering wheel, front armrest and cloth upholstery. To this you can add standard multimedia, consisting of CD-player MP3, six speakers and on-board computer. Comfort in the cabin is provided by air conditioning, heated/electrically driven front seats/windows, power steering and the ability to adjust its reach/angle, electrically driven side mirrors, start/stop button of the power unit and air conditioning, the difference of which is that it uses refrigerant R134A.

Electronics

We have talked a lot about electronics in articles about other BMW models. Here we will touch upon the main systems responsible for safety.

Everyone probably knows about BMW ABS sensors. It is an anti-lock braking system that prevents the wheels from locking when braking. Thanks to this system, the stability and controllability of the coupe is preserved even during emergency braking. But rapid progress in the automobile industry has led to the growth of speeds. New models can reach speeds of up to 300 km/h. Therefore, other systems have come to the aid of ABS.

The electronic DSC system provides stability control by constantly monitoring the vehicle’s behavior. Its purpose is to prevent the car from tipping over (chassis traction changes) or skidding (braking is used). Information comes from different sensors, but the main data comes from 4 wheel angular velocity instruments. According to experts, after seat belts, this is the second important invention in the field of car safety.

The DBC system is connected to them. It accelerates the pressure build-up in the brake actuator during emergency braking. This ensures the shortest possible braking distance. On the basis of the data collected, the computer, having identified the degree of danger of the situation, sets the necessary pressure in the brake system to shorten the braking distance of the coupe.

The SHS controls the braking and cornering processes of the car, stabilizing the car. It is considered to be the optimal braking system. Interaction takes place between the brakes and the accelerator pedal. When the driver presses the brake pedal, the microcomputer instantly evaluates the necessary parameters and gives the required braking force on a particular wheel. As soon as the driving parameters change, the forces will be electronically redistributed immediately.

The BMW DTC also prevents the vehicle from skidding and slipping. This traction control system gives the coupe confidence when starting, climbing/descending, especially on slippery surfaces. If it is absent or turned off, the driver will have to turn the steering wheel to compensate for the coupe’s impulses to skid. With the system on, the car has no such problems.

The conclusion is that cars equipped with these systems are safer to drive than cars without them.

Engine

The technical characteristics of BMW 2 Series cars depend on the specific modification. Their driving qualities depend on the settings and special engine management programs. But the principle of operation of all engines is common: less fuel, more dynamics.

The first cars of the F22 series were equipped with motors with VANOS/VALVETRONIC systems. The gasoline version of the 220i coupe was equipped with a 4-cylinder engine N20B20U0, but in the summer of 2016 it was replaced by a two-liter unit B48 with an output of 184 “horses”. It accelerated the car to the “hundredth” in 7.1 seconds and developed a top speed of 235 km / h. Fuel consumption per 100 km 4.7-7 liters.

Among the 5 gasoline versions, the most powerful models are considered to be M235i/240i. They are equipped with three-liter motors N55 and B58, developing power of 326/340 “horses”. The engines accelerate the coupe to “hundredth” in 4.8 sec. and develop a top speed of 250 km/h. But the fuel consumption per 100 km in the first modification is slightly better, 5.9-10.3 vs. 6.2-10.6 liters.

The most economical option is the 218d version (there is no gasoline counterpart, the 218i) with a two-liter N47 or B47 unit. The 220d model, produced until 2017, has a similar motor, but stronger, 190 hp vs. 143. Fuel consumption per 100 km is almost the same. 3.6-4.8 liters in the 218 vs. 3.8-4.9 in the 220. But the more powerful engine has a solid advantage in acceleration of the car (7.1 sec. vs. 8.4) to “hundredth” and development of maximum (230 vs. 213) speed. And the strongest diesel version is the 225d coupe.

In the “base” all power units are combined with a 6-speed manual with Comfort, Sport, Eco Pro modes. An 8-range Steptronic automatic is an option.

Equipment

To make the car’s handling comfortable, the concern’s engineers equip their products with BMW EfficientDynamics, Many car enthusiasts do not know what this technology is. Let’s say that it allows you to stop the engine and start it in automatic mode, and it works in tandem with the transmission (it can be manual or automatic).

Add to this the presence of rear-wheel drive, sophisticated coupe wheel technology, balanced weight distribution, powerful brakes, axles and electric power steering.

Driving amenities are created as well:

  • Navigation system;
  • Drive Assistant function;
  • Climate control;
  • IDrive System;
  • Touch screen control controller controls;
  • BMW Professional audio system;
  • ECO PRO mode;
  • BMW ConnectedDrive system functions.

I would like to dwell a little more on the latest configurations.

ECO PRO allows you to reduce fuel consumption. With this mode, you can disable the heating of the exterior mirrors, limit the heating of the seats to 37.5 degrees, reduce the intensity of cooling/heating (the minimum power is left), change the characteristics of gear shifting t electronic gas pedal. This is the principle of its operation on the BMW.

ConnectedDrive comes standard with integrated SIM cards to enable Teleservices emergency/automatic calling, access to Intelligent Emergency Calling and battery monitoring. Other services are available as options, in packages or individually.

Difference between restyling and prerestyling

Official restyling of F22 has not been carried out by the concern, but motorists have all possibilities to change characteristics, appearance or interior of the coupe. That is, it is possible to carry out a variety of tuning of the car. Favor on the car market there is a wide range of products that allow you to improve the quality of the coupe. What is not there. You can buy interior/mirror covers, muffler nozzles, accent stripes, handlebars, decorative films, spoilers, steering wheels, diffusers and other elements for BMW F22, photos of which you see below.

The exhaust/brake system is an important part of the vehicle. For tuning the first unit, you can buy mufflers and carbon fiber nozzles for them. The second system can be modified with 3 types of kits, which contain sets of necessary parts for coupe axles.

If you don’t like the standard rims, please choose products with a distinctive design. Do you want to change the interior of the cabin? No problem here either. In this category you can buy steering wheels, with or without display, steering wheel knobs, carbon fiber covers for the selector lever handle, interior/trunk mats. All these accessories will make the driver feel comfortable when driving the F22 and the passengers feel comfortable when traveling.
