The N55 engine series is a six-cylinder piston engine with two camshafts. This engine has been in production since 2009 and was equipped with direct injection and a turbine. This engine was launched for the BMW 535i as a modification in the GranTurismo. The N55 replaced the N54, although the latter was produced until 2011. Technical characteristics did not change much, but the German concern reduced the production costs of each individual unit and slightly improved the quality of the entire powertrain lineup. Based on the N55, a high-speed power unit S55 was later created, which was intended for M-series cars.

Advantages
Beginning in 2009, ending in 2010, Bavaria Motors made extensive use of the term Twin PowerTurbo, and trademarked this wording for the turbocharger. The term Twin PowerTurbo also included a high-precision fuel injection system for gasoline powerplants that had direct fuel injection into the combustion chamber. But our protagonist differed significantly from the N54 in the implementation of the twin turbine and high-precision fuel injection system. The main changes touched the position of economy and quality. Technical characteristics remained practically on the same level. As a result, Bavaria Motors on the N55 received lower fuel consumption, with almost the same power and torque.
Disadvantages
Talk about problems. Despite the fact that the N55 engine in 2014 was recognized as one of the best motors in the weight category 2.5 to 3.0 liters, it has certain shortcomings. Most of them are inherited from past generations. But the most important and materially costly problem was the failure of the high-pressure pump. On cars, after 3 years of active use, there were ignition misses on warming up. Oil consumption increased significantly due to the fact that the crankcase gas ventilation valves failed. The increased level of vibration and at the same time reduced power, speaks about the wear of fuel injectors. If you constantly drive the engine into the red zone, be prepared that the electronics may not work correctly. And always keep an eye on the quality of the oil grade and fuel mixture.
Technical specifications
Let’s talk about the technical characteristics. Our power plant received a design with a closed cylinder block, and the engine cooling system is closed in the upper part. As for technical innovations, motorists of Bavaria Motors installed a new forged steel crankshaft, pistons received top rings, which were significantly improved. The crankshaft received new bearings, and the ignition system – new powerful plugs. The intake manifold has optimized geometry, and the exhaust system has reduced exhaust back pressure.
Our powertrain is an inline six-cylinder engine. It has a displacement of 2,979 cubic centimeters. The cylinder diameter is 84 mm, and the piston stroke is 89. 6 mm. In order to get the maximum power of 306 horsepower, 225 kW, the engine must be accelerated to 5800 rpm. Maximum torque of 400 Newtons per meter was achieved at 1200 rpm. The engine had a compression ratio of 10.2 to one. A total of four valves per cylinder were installed. The engine weighed about 131 kg, complied with the Euro-5 environmental standard and received a digital engine management system MEVD17.2
