Let’s consider the technical characteristics of this model. This engine began to be produced in Munich in 2009 and is still in production. The cylinder block here is created from aluminum, and an injector is used as a power system. The inline engine has 6 cylinders and 4 valves on each of them. The piston stroke here is equal to 89.6 millimeters, and the cylinder diameter is at the level of 84 millimeters. The compression ratio in this version was in the region of 10.2. The volume of this power unit is equal to 3 liters. And here the power ranges from 306 to 370 horsepower at 5800-6500 rpm. Maximum torque is available from 400 to 465 N*m at 1200-5550 rpm.
The best and most suitable fuel for this machine is 95 grade gasoline. It supports Euro 5 environmental standards, and the weight of the engine is equal to 135 kilograms. Gasoline consumption in this case in urban conditions is 11.6 liters per 100 kilometers. On the mixed territory the indicator is reduced to 8.2 liters, but on the highway it will be at the level of 6.3 liters per 100 kilometers of distance. Oil is consumed in the amount of almost 700 grams per 1000 kilometers. The engine can be filled with oil 5W-40 or 5W-30, at the same time it contains 6.5 liters of such oil. Also its replacement is carried out somewhere once every 10 thousand kilometers, and the operating temperature of the device is within 110 degrees. The practical resource of this power unit is not yet established. But tuning in the potential can give more than 400 horsepower.

Advantages
The aforementioned series of inline engines with 6 cylinders began production in 2009 and was a replacement for its predecessors. The cylinder block there remained old and powerful. It was made of aluminum and cast iron liners. In addition, oil injectors were used here, a light crankshaft, connecting rods and pistons were changed. The length of the connecting rods became slightly longer. The head on the cylinder block was refined, as was the phase change system for distributing gas to the 2 shafts.
More motorists saw a new valve lift height editing system. The diameter of the exhaust and intake valves changed slightly too. For the camshafts, the phase and lift parameters remained largely unchanged. The exhaust and intake system has been further refined. Now the model with two turbocharged compressors changed to one with twinscroll, which provides a stable torque at 1200 rpm. The pressure is at 0.65 bar.
A control system from a well-known developer was also used. The engine is used on indices of cars 40i or 35i. And also the power unit became the base for future sports variants.
Disadvantages
High oil consumption. These problems are due to the fact that the vented crankcase gas valve may fail. It should be checked and replaced if necessary.
The ignition sometimes works with slight hiccups. This problem is most often caused by dirty coked hydraulic compensators. It is necessary to check in time and pour only oil of the above-mentioned brands.
The power unit vibrates. The malfunction usually lies in the injectors, the resource of which is within 80 to 100 thousand kilometers. It is necessary to monitor their condition and buy fresh versions of injectors. This will help the motor to work properly.
In addition, the old problems with the fuel injector was never fixed, it can sometimes fail. Again, in order for everything to work, you need to fill oil and gasoline of exceptionally high quality.
If you do not take into account or in time to monitor all these failures, then the main advantages of the apparatus are reliability, power and good tuning reserve. Buying this model will be a very right choice.
Modifications
- M0 was produced from 2009 to the present time. This is the basic modification with 306 horsepower of power at 5800 rpm. Here the maximum torque is 400 N*m between 1200 and 5000 rpm. It is available only for cars with the 35i index.
- The N55 was released between 2010 and the present day. Its power was equal to 320 horsepower at 5800-6000 rpm. The maximum torque here is 450 N*m between 1300 and 4500 rpm. In this variant cooling has been improved and the firmware for ECU has been edited. The variant is produced for cars with the index 40i or 35i.
- The HP began production in 2011 and is being developed until today. It has a power output of 340 horsepower at 5800-6000 rpm. The maximum torque here varies from 450 to 500 N*m between 1300 and 4500 rpm. It is also used on cars with the index 35i.
- The T0 was produced from 2015 to the current time. It has 360 horsepower of power at 5800-6000 rpm. The maximum torque here was 465 N*m between 1350 and 5250 rpm. It is used on cars with 40i index.
- The O0 was also produced from 2015 to present day. Its power reached 370 horsepower at 6500 rpm. But the maximum torque varied from 465 to 500 N*m between 1400 and 5550 rpm. It is used exclusively for M2 cars.
Chip tuning
Here, as in its predecessor, chipping was used very easily. In general, these actions help to achieve 380 horsepower and higher. You just need to buy downpipes and with the native firmware, you can raise the power to 360 horsepower or more.
If you buy a BMS cold intake or a full exhaust from a sport model, you can get 380 horsepower and up. These improvements will help you run 402 meters in 12 seconds. The native model with an index in 135i will pass such distance in 13.5 seconds. Therefore, the difference is tangible for those who like fast or sporty driving.
