The S63B44T0 power unit features direct fuel injection into the combustion chambers for maximum performance and economy. The intake valves are lifted by the third-generation Valvetronic continuously variable valve train.

The Double-VANOS system has been tweaked to achieve an intake adjustment range of 70 and an exhaust adjustment range of 55. The standard cooling system has also been redesigned to reduce the likelihood of the power unit overheating.

As turbochargers used Garrett MGT2260DSL, providing boost pressure of 1.5 bar, which is why the power units are able to develop so much power. Everything is controlled by the Bosch MEVD17.2.8 electronic engine control unit.

Disadvantages

S63B44T0 motors often cause their owners problems with increased consumption of lubricant. The first cause of such a malfunction is clogged piston grooves, as well as the loss of properties of the rings themselves. It is noticed that this can occur even on relatively new motors that have passed about 50 thousand kilometers. The problem is quite expensive and difficult to solve – you will have to overhaul the engine and replace the piston rings.

Hydro-impact is also a not uncommon problem faced by owners of vehicles with such power units under the hood. Most often, the malfunction manifests itself when the motor stands idle for a long time. The reason lies in the injectors, which were selected in an inappropriate way and changed throughout the years while the motors were produced. The only way out of the situation is to replace the piezoelectric nozzles with a model from the latest version of the motor.

Ignition misses are also often observed by owners of such motors. In such situations, the only thing to suspect is the plugs, which are also not selected in the best way. It is recommended to use plugs from the sport series of M motors.

But increased oil consumption can be caused not only by rings. The fact is that alucil is very susceptible to corrosion, so this phenomenon can also negatively affect the consumption of lubricant. In this case, you can not do without replacing the entire cylinder block, which is quite expensive.

The turbochargers are not well positioned as they are mounted between the cylinder rows. This results in increased heat dissipation at the block headland. It is in this place that the main nodes, through which oil flows to the superchargers, pass. Due to the high temperature, the tubes begin to gradually clog, which reduces the flow of oil and the turbines gradually begin to fail. The increased temperature can also wear out the vacuum lines and connections of the standard cooling system.

But despite all these typical faults, the engine is capable of normal operation. You just need to maintain it in a timely manner, use quality fuel and lubricant, and try to replace as many problematic components as possible. The exact displacement of the powertrain is slightly short of 4.4 liters and is 4395. This is done in order to save on the tax levy. The motor has eight cylinders, which are arranged in a V configuration. The diameter of each of the cylinders is 89 millimeters. Thanks to a piston stroke of 88.3 millimeters it was possible to achieve a compression ratio of 10k1.

For normal performance, you can use AI-95 gasoline, but it is better to overpay a little at gas stations and fill 98 gasoline. With measured driving and normal quality of road surface, the average fuel consumption is about 10 liters per hundred kilometers. A direct fuel injection system and a twin turbine are used.

Maximum torque is reached at 5,750 rpm and amounts to 680 Nm. Peak power is developed at 7,000 rpm and reaches 560 horsepower.

Tuning

The S63B44T0 engines have two turbos, so there is more than enough potential to increase output. A simple software change in Stage 1 will remove about 680 horsepower from the motor. You can try to get about 750 horses. For this you will have to make little effort, it will be enough to install downpipes, sports exhaust system and customize the software to work correctly.
