/Presentation of the sports sedan BMW 5 F10 M5 5th generation took place in early June 2011. It took place at the Frankfurt Motor Show. After 5 months, sales of BMW M5 v F10 began. This car was assembled by Germans on the conveyor belt of the plant located in the city of Dingolfing.

Appearance

The exterior of the 2012 BMW M5 F10 sports car is signature. Its appearance from the standard models is almost no different. The main chip is the M-package. There is no sporty dodger on the regular models. The sedan has original disks R20. The front bumper was deprived of “fog lights”. Additional air ducts took their place. Their function is to direct the air flow to the brake disks. It is necessary for effective cooling.

There are “gills” on the front fenders. Their purpose is to divert hot air from under the hood. The Germans have given the external mirrors an aerodynamic shape. German engineers explained that if you drive intensively for 20 hours, the mirrors simply break out of their mountings. At extreme speeds, the airflow coming towards them exerts a prohibitive pressure on them.

At the stern, you can notice four exhaust pipes arranged in pairs. The bumper has a small diffuser. Everything else is similar to the standard version.

BMW is a medium-sized car in terms of dimensions. In length, the sports sedan stretches 4.91 meters. The width of the car is 1.89 meters, height – 1.47 meters. Wheelbase of the M5 F160 is 2.96 meters. Ground clearance of the car is 117 mm, weight is 1.95 tons.

Interior

Similar words can be said about the interior of the BMW M5 F10. The differences from the standard interior are in frontal sport seats with adjustable rollers on the side, developed headrest and more rigid frame, in “M-rudder” (it is a little larger than standard “baranka”), bars from aluminum on a torpedo, and also in a tiny platform where the left leg of the driver can rest. The upholstery is Merino leather.

The main difference is the small gear selector, decorated with the “M” nameplate (it is tri-color, blue – red – blue). It has good quality and more functions. With its help, the driver can adjust the driving mode, stabilization system, suspension, sharpness of the steering wheel, etc.

Finally, the “M” logo is also painted on the dashboard. The difference can be seen in the photo of the BMW M5 F10.

The trunk volume is 520 liters.

Equipment

In the “base” sports sedan in the stock is equipped with eight airbags, five-spoke disks R20 (later came multi-spoke R19), frontal sport seats, electric adjustments, heating, climate control for 4 zones, dynamic cruise control, bi-xenon adaptive headlights, multimedia iDrive, safety curtains and front knee pads.

Add to this smartphone integration, Twitter/Facebook connectivity, web radio, and the ability to get online traffic and systems data:

  • Night vision;
  • High beam control;
  • Warnings when the lane changes;
  • All-around view;
  • EBD brakes, BAS, etc.

For an additional fee, the car can be equipped with a variety of systems that increase the comfort of the car and its safe operation.

Technical specifications

Now let’s see what are the technical characteristics of the BMW M5 F10. Let’s start the review with the engine.

The car is powered by an atmospheric V-twin, eight-cylinder S63B44 unit with a displacement of 4.4 liters. BMW M5 F10 engine has direct fuel injection and it is equipped with a pair of turbochargers. German specialists used turbocharging on sports cars for the first time. This allowed to increase the power of the engine BMW M5 F10 almost by 40 units. And how many horses on the sports car? Not much, not a few, 560!

Engineers of the concern decided that mechanical transmission is not the best option for such a powerful unit. Therefore, the engine is combined with a 7-speed “robot” Getrag, complete with two clutches. A similar transmission is used on all sports cars. When the “S” mode is switched on, the electronics starts to prepare the next gear automatically. This saves milliseconds when changing gears.

Hence the rapid acceleration of the sports car, confirmed by the reviews of BMW M5 F10 owners. The car can reach the “hundred” in 4.4 sec. The maximum speed reached 250 km/h, and if you install the M’Drivers package – 305! Fuel consumption in the city/on the highway/mixed cycle is 14.0/7.6/9.9 liters. According to the owners’ reviews, a light touch on the gas is enough to make the sports car “shoot” like a fighter jet, squeezing the driver into the seat.

The models, intended for sale on the North American market, were equipped with a 6-speed “mechanics” GS5-53BZ.

The size of the fuel tank is 80 liters.

At such speeds, the handling has to be perfect. Therefore, the standard suspension was modernized. Germans made it more rigid by installing different shock absorbers, springs, silent blocks. In addition, the installation angles of the chassis have been changed. The rigidity of the body has increased due to additional struts. It allowed to reduce rolls of the sedan when it was passing steep turns at speed.

The steering wheel has power steering. Compared to its electric brother, it is better adapted to extreme loads and responds more clearly to the driver’s signals. Add here the stabilization system with xDrive drive, and you will understand why almost two-ton sports car perfectly copes with the steepest turns. The drive test of the BMW M5 F10 proved it.

All chassis were equipped with disc brakes (front – also ventilated) with ABS system.

These are the specs of the BMW M5 F10.

Difference between restyling and prerestyling

In 2013, a restyling of BMW took place. Modernization slightly changed the appearance of the car. Designers decided to emphasize the athleticism of M5 even more strongly. At the radiator grille the rails began to resemble spokes of disks. The volume of the box under the armrest has increased in the cabin. The display that helps to control functions of IDrive OS. Received chrome trim on the sides.

There is a new “CompetitionPackage” package on the BMW M5 F10. How does it differ from the usual one? This option will give M5 F10 owners the opportunity to make their sports car personalized by purchasing special accessories. Additional equipment can also be purchased on board. The BMW M5 F10 2015 package will increase the power of the car by 15 units, and reduce the acceleration time of the sedan by 0.1 sec. The suspension will be lowered by 10 mm, there will be new shock absorbers and much more.

The interior of the BMW M5 F10 2016/2017 will get new decorative accessories, and the body will get an additional color palette.

Additional changes will be given to the car by tuning BMW M5 F10.

It should be noted that in 2013 at the Dubai Auto Show, the German tuning studio Hamann Motorsport showed the public its development, a unique BMW M5 F10. The car was produced in limited numbers. Only 10 copies. The exclusive car had an aggressive styling package. The car had a redesigned front/aft bumper. It received a different radiator grille and ventilated hood. It has widened wheel arches. Additional uniqueness of BMW F10 is given by M5 dodger, tinted optics and multi-spoke chassis wheels.

The body of the car is painted in bright red color, the interior is finished in black, blue and red tones (leather + alcantara).

In 2017. The BMW M5 F10 rolled off the assembly line. In 2018, the M5 F90 model replaced it.
