In 2013, the BMW 3 F34 was presented at the Geneva Motor Show, it was the third body variant in the 3 Series lineup, which was made in the Gran Turismo hatchback variant. The intention of the manufacturers was that the main target audience would be those who preferred the more practical versions of the 3 Series. As a platform for the basis was chosen the same model in the station wagon body, which received certain changes.
Appearance
The side line of the BMW F34 has an elegantly elongated shape along its entire length, resulting in the so-called fastback. The appearance of the car indicates its impetuous dynamism, and the overall concept is not only maintained, but continues to increase along the entire length of the body, directly to the rear of the car. The roof lines are executed in the classic design for the familiar coupe, which gives the opportunity to expand the space in the interior of the body.
The rear of the BMW F34 GT exemplifies the high functionality of the entire vehicle, especially in combination with the extended rear optics that immediately catch the eye. Complementing this is the rather wide bodywork, which allows for a combination of stylish elegance at the same time as a quiet sportiness, and also makes it possible to achieve greater stability while driving the car in difficult corners and at high speeds.
The BMW 3 GT F34 adheres to the Bavarians’ EfficientDynamics philosophy, which is seen in the innovative design of the vehicle. The first distinguishing feature is the underbody of the car and the front bumper, which the engineers have worked hard on. These parts of the car are designed to provide optimal aerodynamics, which helps to reduce drag coefficient and positively affect fuel consumption. In addition, the aerodynamic shapes not only reduce fuel consumption and wind flow resistance, but also allow for optimal noise protection and increased protection against corrosion.
The BMW 3GT F34 features an active rear spoiler that optimizes the airflow at the rear of the car as it picks up speed. This unit works in automatic mode, and independently extends when the car gains speed more than 110 kilometers per hour, when the figure drops below 70 kilometers per hour, the spoiler independently retracts. There is also a self-steering function, for which the button on the driver’s door, located under the electric window actuator, is used.
The R17 BMW F34 wheels are made of lightweight alloy as standard, and are 17 inches in diameter. But depending on the level of equipment, the car can also be equipped with R18 rims.
The dimensions and dimensions of the car allow it to be classified as D-class according to European standards. The vehicle with five doors has the following figures: 4824 millimeters of length, of which 2920 is allocated to the wheelbase. The height is 1508 millimeters, with a width of 1828 millimeters. Such indicators are combined with ground clearance of 165 millimeters. Depending on the equipment, the car can weigh from 1675 to 1800 kilograms in a curb weight.
Interior
In the photo of the BMW F34, it is immediately noticeable that the interior features only high-quality materials that appeal with their functionality and aesthetics. The high seating position and elaborate interior space provides ample head and legroom for front and rear passengers.
The review should start with the fact that the dashboard has a light and elegant design, which perfectly combines with the horizontal lines that are familiar to the Bavarian style. Round dials are placed in such a way that they are in the driver’s constant field of vision. The layout of the center console is also oriented to maximize comfort for the person driving the vehicle. This is an established BMW tradition.
The BMW F34 climate control unit is located in front of the gear selector, and there is room for two cup holders. In the pockets located on the driver’s and front passenger’s doors there is a small niche where you can place a bottle of water or other small items.
Reviews claim that there is more than enough free space in the rear of the car. This was achieved thanks to a fairly large wheelbase. Thanks to this solution, the rear seat accommodates three adults without any problems. Do not forget about the panoramic roof, which gives even more free space, and also transfers the level of comfort to a higher level.
The luggage compartment of the car is characterized not only by the high quality of materials used for finishing, but also by a rather large useful space. In the usual configuration, its volume is 520 liters. The backrests of the rear seat are made in a clever configuration, which allows you to fold them in the proportion of 40:20:40. Such action gives 1600 liters of free space, which is more than enough to accommodate large cargo. The function of folding the seats can be accessed with a lever, manually. In the options, depending on the selected package, it can be done with a button on the remote control key.
There are two shelves in the trunk, which remain in a stationary position even when the tailgate is opened. This makes it possible to use them as separate storage compartments. If the need arises, the shelves can be removed and easily stowed in the luggage compartment, allowing the full height of the compartment to be used effortlessly to accommodate larger items.
Many owners of such cars wonder where the battery is? The location can be read in the service book. After studying the information located there, it is easy to understand that the BMW F34 battery is located inside the rear right fender, which can be accessed from the luggage compartment.
Engines
The specifications of the BMW F34 are provided by four powertrain options that are offered to buyers to choose from. All powertrains can work with an 8-speed ZF automatic gearbox and xDrive transmission that provides all-wheel drive. It is noteworthy that rear-wheel drive was installed only on the most underpowered version of the car.
On the 320i and 320i xDrive modifications, the underhood space was allocated to accommodate a gasoline four-cylinder engine of the B48 range. This is a two-liter power unit, equipped with two superchargers in the form of a turbine. The timing mechanism provides for the installation of 16 valves, and there is also a function of adjusting the timing, which is complemented by direct fuel injection. The maximum power of the motor is reached at 5 thousand rpm, and is 184 horsepower. Peak torque is 270 Nm. Such indicators allow the car to accelerate to the first hundred in just 8.1 seconds, and reach a maximum speed of 229 kilometers per hour. Fuel consumption in quiet mode is about 6.5 liters. Problems BMW F34 with such a motor, as a rule, does not cause.
The 330i xDrive version has the same powertrain, but its maximum power in this case reaches 252 horsepower, which the motor develops at 5200 rpm. Tuning BMW F34 with such a motor is made most often. To accelerate the car to the first hundred will have to spend only 6.2 seconds, and the maximum speed exceeds 250 km / h. Average fuel consumption in the mixed cycle reaches about 6.7 liters for each hundredth.
Modification 340i xDrive is considered top, because under its hood there is a power unit B58 for six cylinders with an in-line layout, which provides 3 liters of working volume. The engine features direct injection, stepless variable valve timing, and a TwinScroll turbo. Maximum output is 326 horsepower at 5.5 thousand rpm. Peak thrust is 450 Nm. Maximum speed reaches 250 kilometers per hour, to the first hundred liftback accelerates in 5 seconds. Fuel consumption in mixed mode does not exceed 7.7 liters per 100 kilometers. Very often owners notice that the BMW F34 does not warm up. In this case, it is necessary to pay attention to the thermostat performance.
320d xDrive is a diesel modification, under the hood of which there is a power unit with four cylinders and a working volume of 2 liters. As a supercharger on the car is installed a turbine with variable geometry. The timing mechanism works with 16 valves. Common Rail fuel supply technology is installed. At 4 thousand revolutions, such a power plant develops about 190 horsepower. The maximum thrust is 400 Nm. The car accelerates to the first hundred in 7.7 seconds. The maximum speed is 225 kilometers per hour. Average fuel consumption reaches about 4.8 liters in mixed mode conditions. Problems with the BMW 320D F34 can only be due to the use of low-quality fuel.
The vehicle features the xDrive all-wheel drive system, which is based on a rear-wheel drive transmission scheme. In normal driving conditions, almost all torque is transferred to the rear axle. The front wheels are engaged thanks to a stepless multi-plate clutch that locks when the car is started from a standing start. This ensures the best possible vehicle dynamics.
Options
The BMW F34 can be retrofitted on a very large scale. The basic equipment of the vehicle includes Park Distance Control, Surround View and Rear View Camera. This allows you to guarantee maximum information during road trips or park maneuvering. The PDC system provides for the installation of acoustic and optical sensors on the bumpers of the car, which makes it possible to park with complete comfort and safety. The car also features the RTTI system, which is part of the innovative ConnectedDrive equipment. This solution provides information about the situation on the road, so you can easily create alternative routes and always be aware of the traffic situation.
Park Assistant helps you maneuver in parallel parking lots. The system automatically takes over control of the vehicle when a suitable parking space is detected, and the driver only has to apply the brakes or accelerate. Instructions appear on the control display.
The car also features active cruise control, a stop-and-go function, and integrated collision warning radar, which has a built-in braking function. This makes it possible to ensure maximum safety while driving.
The battery is recharged thanks to a system that regenerates the energy released during braking. This is an intelligent energy management system that helps to improve performance and reduce fuel consumption. The same functions are performed by the Start-Stop system, which shuts down the engine when necessary.
The car is equipped with a Harmann Kardon audio system, which provides for the integration of 16 speakers and a digital amplifier that produces 600 watts of output power.
There are several packages available for the car – Luxury Line, Modern Line, Sport Line and M Sport Package, which provide for original dodging and are able to reveal hidden functions that are embedded in the car by the Bavarians, but hidden for base kits.
Differences between restyling and prerestyling
BMW F34 restyling saw the light of day in 2016, when the Bavarians decided to update the design of the hatchback. This happened in the summer, and the world premiere was made at the 2016 Paris Motor Show.
Also, like the classic car of the third series, the F34 received minimal changes in appearance. The car began to install diode head optics. The bumpers have slightly changed their outlines. Two additional shades were added to the range of body colors. Three new variants were added to the list of disks available to choose from. The interior began to be covered with additional materials.
