The motor became a worthy replacement for the previous version M47 and was released in 2007. It was used for versions of BMW E87, 81. The engine N47 is a turbocharged four-cylinder diesel unit with 16 valves. The principal difference with the previous variation was the presence of an improved, lightweight cylinder block made of aluminum with attached liners made of cast iron, two upper camshafts. The diameter of each cylinder is 84 mm. There are four valves per cylinder. In the block are located connecting rods and crankshaft, the piston stroke of which is 90 mm. The piston height is 47 mm with a compression ratio of 16.5. The diameter of the intake valve is 27.2 mm, the exhaust valve – 24.6 with a foot thickness of 5 mm. The engine is equipped with Common rail injection system with pressure up to 2200 bar, electromagnetic injectors, turbocharger. The total working volume of the N47 engine is 2.0 liters. Initial varieties of the engine with power characteristics of 116 and 143 horses were equipped with a turbine Garrett GTB 1749VK.
The timing chain is located behind the engine. Theoretically, its resource is designed for the whole time of engine operation, but in practice, there are often some problems with durability. Also a feature of the diesel power plant N47 is the use of recirculation valve, dual-mass flywheel, control unit Bosch DDE 7,0- DDE 7,1.
The N47 engine is simultaneously produced with a 1.6-liter displacement.
In 2014, the N47 power unit was discontinued. The most modern diesel B47 became available.

Disadvantages
The new N47 series engine has copied the faults of the previous variation, the M47. Among the most common problems of the N47 diesel powertrain are extraneous noises in the rear of the engine. The cause can be the stretching of the timing chain. When replacing this part, the driver will have to face some problems associated with the need to remove the engine itself. Noises can be caused by the crankshaft damper, the resource of which is usually about 100,000 km. Due to the appearance of soot on the swirl flaps, characteristic sounds appear. In this case, it is recommended to either flush the flaps or install plugs. The second option must be accompanied by re-flashing of the engine control unit for its adequate operation. It is also important not to allow the engine to overheat, which can cause cracks in the block between the cylinders. It is necessary to monitor the quality of the poured diesel and machine oil, it is better to use the product recommended by the manufacturer. It is recommended to carry out a scheduled inspection every 15 000 km. The resource of the N47 power unit directly depends on the level of maintenance, timely change of its elements and can reach 300,000 km.
Modifications
The N47 engine is represented by the following varieties:
- N47D20K0 is the weakest version, first introduced in 2007, with a power output of only 116 horses at 4,000 rpm. The motor is equipped with a fuel injection system using an electromagnetic nozzle up to 1600 bar. The compression level is 16.0. It is found on the BMW E81 116d, E90 316d models.
- N47D20U0 – the motor can accelerate up to 143 horsepower, capable of developing torque up to 300Nm. The unit is characterized by the presence of solenoid injectors, inherent in a weak motor, supercharging pressure of 1.5 bar. The engine has a turbocharger Garret GTB1749VK. N47D20U0 was installed in BMW E87 118d, E90 318d, E84 X1, E83 X3.
- N47D20O0 – version gains up to 177 horses at 4000 rpm. The value of torque is 340 Nm. The engine has piezoteric injectors, turbine MHI TF035HL c pressure of 1.55 bar, as well as control unit DDE 7,1. The engine is found in BMW E87 120d, E90 320d, E60 520d, X1 E84, X3 E83.
- N47TOP – the power of this beast reaches 204 horsepower at 4400 rpm. The engine is characterized by the presence of two Borg Warner KP35 and K16 turbochargers with a pressure of 2 bar, updated exhaust, pierzo injectors with a pressure value higher than in previous versions. The motor is found on BMW 123d E87, X1 E84.
- N47D20K1 or N47TU – the power unit was produced to replace the N47D20K0 engine. Unlike its predecessor, the unit is characterized by economy, fuel consumption has decreased by 3%. The power of the engine is 116 horses at 4000 rpm. The N47D20K1/ N47TU is equipped with an IHI RHVI-T39 turbine and DDE 7.1 control unit. The following BMW versions can be found with this motor: 116d F20, X1 E84.
- N47D20U1 or N47TU is a worthy replacement for its “brother” N47D20U0. The unit has an IHI RHVI-T39 turbine, as well as a control unit DDE 7.1. The engine can gain up to 143 horsepower from 4000 rpm. The torque value is 320 Nm at 1700-2500 rpm. The power plant is characterized by maximum environmental friendliness, as it meets the environmental characteristics of Euro 5. Such engines, for example, can boast the following versions of BMW: 118d F20, 318d F30, X3 F25.
- N47D20O1 replaced N47D20O0. The power unit is equipped with a turbine MHI TF035HL with control unit DDE 7,1. Its power can reach 184 horses at 4000 rpm. The torque is 380 Nm from 2,750 rpm. N47D20O1 is installed on the 328d F30, 520d F10, X3 F25 versions. On cars BMW 320d Efficient Dynamics, X1 Efficient Dynamics were installed similar engines, but the program method reduced the power to 163 horses at 4000 rpm. At the same time, the value of torque reached 380 Nm at 2750 rpm.
- N47S1 / N47D20T1 is a top of the range variation of the power unit with updated intake and exhaust systems. The engine replaced its predecessor N47D20T0. Engine power reaches 218 horses at 4400 rpm, 450Nm of torque at 2500 rpm.
- N47C20U1 – designed specifically for the Mini Cooper SD model.
Chip tuning
As for N47 tuning, it is recommended to re-flash the engine, this will add up to 50 horses. The 20d index models can be brought up to 220 horsepower. Chip tuning allows the N47TOP motor to increase power to 250 horses. Equipping the N47TU power unit with 116 and 143 horses with a standard turbine will give an increase of up to 200 horsepower. Retrofitting the top engine N47S1 allows to achieve more than 240 horses.
