This engine was released in 2011 and is still one of the most popular from this manufacturer. The conventional cylinder block was made of modern aluminum. The feed system used is the familiar in-line system of the engine. There are 4 cylinders, in addition there are 4 valves per cylinder. The stroke of the standard piston in it is 90.1 millimeters, and the cylinder diameter is 84 millimeters. The external compression ratio in this case can be 10 or 11, this parameter depends on several factors.

The volume of the engine reaches 1997 cubic centimeters. The power of the engine at 5000 rpm is from 156 to 245 horsepower. And here at 5500 rpm it is equal to 218 horsepower. Maximum torque here at 1250-4500 rpm is from 240 to 270 N*m. At 1350-4800 rpm, the torque will be 310 N*m. But at 1250-4800 rpm it will be 350 N*m. Many drivers use 95 or 98 grade gasoline, which do not affect the work of this engine and help to allocate all its power. Euro 5-6 environmental standards are even present here. When using the engine in 320i F30 consumes 8.8 liters per 100 kilometers in the city, 5.6 liters per 100 kilometers on the highway and 6.8 liters per 100 kilometers for mixed territory. Oil is consumed somewhere in the region of 700 grams per 1000 kilometers. For the engine is perfectly suitable oil 5W-30 or 5W-40. A maximum of 5 liters of oil can be present in the engine at the same time. It is recommended to change it every 10 thousand kilometers. The resource of the engine in practical conditions is 250 thousand kilometers and more. After tuning, the car can have 300 or more horsepower in potential.

Advantages

This turbocharged inline engine was put on the assembly line in 2011 and at first it was used only to replace the big inline engines with 6 cylinders N53B25 or N53B30. The block here is used from an alloy where there is aluminum, there are also two balancer shafts here. There is a steel plated, forged crankshaft has four counterweights and offset. All the connecting rods are 144 millimeters long and are similar to the N55. The FM pistons have negative piston pin displacement. The head on the cylinder block is also similar to the one on the N55. Only here they use a valve overvalve height editing system. Gas distribution phases are changed on all shafts (both exhaust and intake). The camshafts here are composite, and gasoline injection has a direct structure.

The turbocharged compressor has a twinscroll structure with Mitsubishi, it gives 1.2 bar. The manifold is also similar in structure to the issue that the N55 had. It also uses a modern external engine management system from Bosch. All cars with model indices 28i, 25i or 20i can get this engine if the developers and the owner wish.

Disadvantages

On this engine, as well as on the engine of the last generation, there are small vibrations, at revs you can feel buoyancy. Also, some drivers complain about high fuel consumption, which diverges from the catalog data.

Modifications

  • The N20B20O0, which is made in 2011, is the basic one and has a standard compression ratio of 10. Here the pressure will be equal to 1.15 bar and the power reaches 245 hp at 5000 rpm. The maximum torque is equal to 350 N*m if there is from 1250 to 4800 rpm. This model is used for indexing 28i.
  • N20B20U0, which is also made in 2011, has an increased compression of 11. Here the pressure is only 0.55 bar, the exhaust pipe diameter is smaller, power is 184 horsepower at 5000 rpm. The maximum torque is 270 N*m if there is from 1200 to 4500 rpm. The model stands on the BMW with the indexation 20i.
  • N20B20M0, which was made in 2012, has the old compression of 10, but the power reaches 218 horsepower at 5000 rpm. Maximum torque here is equal to 310 N*m if there is from 1350 to 4800 rpm. The modification often stands in models with the indexation 25i.
  • N20B20O0 which is made in 2013 has an output of 238 horsepower at 5000 rpm. Here the maximum torque will be 350 N*m if there is from 1250 to 4800 rpm. The model is also installed when indexed 25i.
  • The N20B20U0 is also made in 2013 and is a pretty weak mod with an external compression of 10. But the output of 156 horsepower at 5000 rpm and torque of 240 N*m if there is from 1250 to 4400 rpm gives a rather mediocre result. The modification is used on models of index 18i.

Chip tuning

The power of this engine can be increased with a simple tuning chip. Stage one can increase power up to 280 horsepower. Chipping in the second stage with a cold intake, using an intercooler, exhaust and downpipe can help achieve 300 horsepower. And the dynamics in this case can be similar to those achieved in the N55 on the 335i. Each of these types of tuning will cause the engine to wear out very quickly and each change will bring the car closer to service.
On the 320i or 328i indexes, the tuning is slightly different. In the case of using a simple 328i firmware, you can increase the power to 240-245 horsepower, which is achieved in the 320i. In addition, you should know that here you have pistons that are adjusted to compression 10 and an exhaust pipe with a larger diameter. Therefore, in the future, the pistons should be changed to those in the 328i, modify the exhaust pipe, install the application of cold air, intercooler. Only after these modifications it will be possible to flash the engine to the second stage.
The rating of this engine is estimated by experts as very good. On a 5-point scale, the evaluation of this product will be 4+.
