On June 10, 2015, the sixth generation of the BMW 7 Series G11-G12 sedans was presented to the world at the Munich Auto Show. They turned out to be the BMW G11 and its extended version G12. On July 1 of the same year, the production of two body variants of the car began at the plant located in Dingolfing.

In October 2015, sales of the model for the European market were launched. The sedan was immediately presented as a flagship, as it was positioned as a car belonging to the 2016 model range. This was a subtle hint that the model was ahead of its time.

Exterior

The designers chose a special approach to the appearance of the BMW 7 Series G11, which allowed it to become much more aggressive and stand out from a modern point of view, compared to the previous model. Such a decision immediately found both adherents and those people who did not like the new look of the body at all. But the Bavarians did not retreat, and aggressiveness won in the automobile market.

At the first glance at the BMW 7 series G11, the hood, which has reliefs in the center, immediately catches the eye. The head optics, which trump narrow LED headlights, also has a chic appearance. In the space between the headlights there is a branded radiator grille in chrome finish, thanks to which all cars of the German concern stand out in the general flow. The front bumper of BMW 740d G11 also stands out rather massive sizes. Its relief forms perfectly fit into the overall design of the car. In the lower part there are small fog lights, which are additionally decorated with chrome inserts. There is a place on the front bumper for the standard splitter, which is also additionally decorated with chrome inserts.
The side part of BMW 730i G11 is also not deprived of chrome inserts, and in a large number. But with all this, it also combines the ability to look less aggressive. Wheel arches are not very much widened. In the upper part of the body there is a rather aggressive line, giving the car a certain boldness. The lower part of the body is also characterized by the presence of a large chrome insert. And according to the 7 Series tradition, the window trim is also decorated with chrome. Fans will notice a slight resemblance to the third series when looking at the car from the side.

The designers also put their best efforts to get a beautiful and aggressive rear end of the BMW G11 750d, and they succeeded. The trunk lid is quite massive, but it does not create discomfort, as it is equipped with electric drive. It also features a beautiful chrome insert running through the entire rear optics. The taillights are made in the classic style for the Bavarians, and also have an LED device.

The BMW G11 photo also shows that the rear bumper doesn’t stand out for its small size either – it’s massive and slightly embossed. The exhaust pipes are quite large, but neatly integrated into the lower part of the rear bumper. Collectively, it all looks pretty good and attractive. The chrome inserts come off the reflectors, which also find a place on the rear bumper. The body dimensions of the standard model are as impressive as its appearance. The length of the body of the G11 7 series is 5098 millimeters. The width of the car reaches 1902 millimeters, with a wheelbase of 3070 millimeters. The height of the body is quite large – 1467 millimeters, which allows you to get in and out of the car without any problems. With such parameters, engineers managed to achieve a maximum ground clearance of 135 millimeters.

There is also a place in the model range for the long version Long, which received the index G12. This is a traditional solution for Bavarian manufacturers in the lineup of executive class sedans. Only clearance and width of the car remained unchanged. The length has been increased to 5238 millimeters, while the height has also become 1485 millimeters, respectively, the wheelbase has been lengthened – 3210 millimeters. The difference between the BMW G11 and G12 was only this.

If we talk in general, then the manufacturers managed to make a rather attractive design. If you look from an aesthetic point of view, then the car can be chosen because of it, because it begins to surprise already at first sight. Therefore, external tuning of BMW G11 is not required.

Interior

The BMW G11 Elephant was also not left out of the designers’ attention. They managed to make everything beautiful and on a modern level. According to the tradition of Bavarian manufacturers, only high-quality materials and a high level of assembly of details were used. Everything is made in the corporate style of BMW. Even people who are not particularly knowledgeable about different car makes and models will be able to point out the manufacturer without much difficulty. Whether to consider it a plus or a minus depends only on the owners of the G11 seventh series.

Although the main seating positions of the BMW 7-Series are in the back, the front seats of the BMW G11 are also worth paying attention to. The front seats are of quite good quality and are finished in excellent leather. For front passengers there is a possibility of electric adjustment of seats in a large number of directions. Ventilation and heating of seats have also found a place in the car. It is quite comfortable inside, so discomfort will not be present even when traveling long distances.

The rear row is a bit more interesting. In the regular version G11 there is a sofa equipped with a large armrest, which has the ability to recline. The Long version, labeled G12, has only two seats separated by a large tunnel. The tunnel is not left empty, but accommodates a large number of functional accessories, among which are niches for small things, ports for connecting USB devices, as well as cupholders and much more.

In addition, a multimedia system is also provided for the convenience of the rear passengers. Despite the fact that it is located at the rear, the system is practically the main system. The passenger sitting on the right side is also given the opportunity to fold and push back the front seat. This can be done with the help of a special button, after which a comfortable footrest starts to lower and the seat is adjusted. The Bavarians have not spared the driver either, and this is also their certain tradition. A large steering wheel, with an impressive amount of aluminum, on which there are quite a few buttons, is provided for control. Electric adjustments and heating function are also provided for the steering wheel. The instrument panel has become fully electronic. In it are available functions of imitation of analog gauges, for fans of old car models, but there is also the possibility of displaying a large amount of other information useful in driving. A windshield projection is also available, allowing you to drive the vehicle without taking your eyes off the road.

The center console features a large 10-inch display of the iDrive multimedia system. This is an innovative system that provides for gesture control. Owners of such cars will be able to control playback volume, switch tracks and receive incoming calls, as well as perform a large number of other operations without distracting from the road. Neat air deflectors are located under the monitor. At the bottom of the deflectors there is a CD slot and a small number of buttons. This is also the control unit for the climate control, which is intuitive to use.

The tunnel is almost entirely made of luxurious material – it is wooden. There are cupholders under a special cover. In the middle there is a gearbox selector, which is characterized by relatively small dimensions. The puck for multimedia system control and several buttons are also located there. The tunnel also houses the button for activating or deactivating the parking brake, as well as the air suspension settings. The perfect sound system is provided thanks to the installation of Bang & Olufsen music system. The size of the trunk is quite large for such cars, and its useful space has a volume of 515 liters.

Engines

At the beginning of the serial production of the new BMW 7 Series to the choice of buyers were given options with diesel and gasoline power units for 4, 6 or 8 cylinders. Three variants of these motors was a completely new development from the Germans, and the fourth provided for the modernization of the old model. A model powered by a hybrid powertrain was also available. The 730i version and its extended counterpart 730Li are considered basic. They were powered by the B48B20 engine, providing BMW G11 performance, which provided 2.0 liters of displacement provided by four cylinders. This powertrain provided up to 258 horsepower and was not characterized by high fuel consumption.

The 740i and 740Li versions were powered by B58B30M0 powertrains. These motors had 3 liters of displacement, which was placed in six cylinders. The engines had a peak power output of 326 horsepower and a maximum torque of 500 Nm. The 750i and 750 Li xDrive models, which featured all-wheel drive, were powered by N63B44O2 engines with eight cylinders in a V configuration. Thanks to the installation of two turbos, it was possible to remove about 450 horsepower from the engine.

There were also diesel versions of the BMW 730d G11 and 730Ld in the lineup, which included only the B57D30O0 six-cylinder powertrain, providing 256 horsepower at peak output. The xDrive versions with all-wheel drive were fitted with the same motor, only in an upgraded version, so it was capable of producing around 320 horses. The top diesel version was the most powerful among its counterparts, thanks to the fact that it was equipped with a motor B57, equipped with four turbines. At the time of its release, this power unit was the most powerful six-cylinder motor in the world.

As hybrid versions in the model range there were BMW 740e and its extended analog BMW 740Le. These modifications were equipped with B48B20 engines with four cylinders, which produced about 258 horsepower and worked in tandem with an electric motor. February 2016 brought an addition to the model range in the form of the top modification M760Li, equipped with a motor N74B66U1, capable of producing up to 600 horsepower of maximum power. The technical characteristics of this modification spoke for itself, so chip tuning and increasing the power of the engine BMW G11 12 was not required.

In 2016, the diesel version 725d and its extended wheelbase counterpart 725Ld were also delivered to the Turkish, Korean, Japanese and European markets. These cars were equipped with B47 engines.

Electronics

The Bavarians have always been leaders in the field of trimmings, and with the 7 Series in G11 and G12 bodies everything happened according to the classics. The front part of the car began to be equipped with an adaptive grille. When the car is not moving and its engine is shut off, the shutters close automatically. When the car is moving, the curtains open slightly, and when it is hot outside or the driver starts to press the accelerator pedal aggressively, the degree of their opening increases. This solution was used to improve the aerodynamic drag coefficient. But this issue raises quite a lot of questions, because during the dialing of high speed the curtains open, and the coefficient begins to fall. But the appearance of such a grille simply mesmerizes the eye.

Laser headlights were also available as an option for customers. They are characterized by the Laserlight inscription on the front optics, as well as blue inserts in the headlights. This is a popular technology from the Bavarians that allows the car to illuminate the path in front of it with high beam, but those driving ahead and oncoming drivers will not be blinded. It’s an adaptive optics option that doubles the range of light compared to conventional bulbs. Classic optics illuminates about 300 meters, and laser optics – 600 meters.

The rear of the car is not distinguished by revolutionary equipment. The only thing that can be noticed there is an electrically operated trunk lid, which can be opened with a small movement of the foot next to it. Closing the luggage compartment is done as well – by moving your foot near the lid. This is quite a convenient solution for those who constantly carry bags in their hands.

The machine is equipped with two keys at once: an additional key and a main key. The main key has a large number of different functions. It can be used to check whether the car is locked at a given time, and it also has remote parking. It also has a large number of additional options.
