The B57D30 motor has 3 liters of displacement and is equipped with six cylinders. It was developed to replace the power units of the N57 range. A distinctive feature of this engine is the equipment with BMW TwinPower Turbo system. This system provides the installation of a turbine with variable geometry and the integration of Common-Rail injection system, characterized by the presence of a common fuel ramp. This engine was the most powerful six-cylinder diesel power unit when production started.

Advantages

The motor received a large number of changes, thanks to which it was possible to reduce fuel consumption, which entailed a reduction in harmful emissions into the atmosphere. This was achieved by reducing the weight of the power unit, installing the TwinPower Turbo system and integrating piezo injectors (the maximum pressure they allowed was 2500 bar). All these changes made the motor 10 percent more economical compared to the previous generation.

Fuel consumption per 100 kilometers of travel for the B57D30 motor is:

  • 5 liters in the city driving cycle.
  • 5 liters while driving on the highway.
  • Up to 5.4 liters in a mixed driving cycle.

According to the results of examination in the European Union, the engine complied with the Euro 6 and Euro 5 environmental standards. Therefore, there were no claims regarding environmental aspects to this power unit.

Disadvantages

Maintenance of B57D30 engines has practically no differences from the standards of maintenance of similar motors belonging to this class. According to the technical documentation, manufacturers recommend to check the performance of all engine components every 15 thousand kilometers. But, it is not necessary to apply for service before 10 thousand kilometers of mileage.

Drivers of cars equipped with such a power unit note certain problems that may arise during the operation of the machine. After 100-150 thousand mileage, the upper vortex flap can tear off. It does not get into the inner space of the motor, unlike the M series, but it can affect the normal performance of the car. A sign of the flap tearing off can be interruptions in the powertrain operation and errors.

The problematic part of this engine is the crankshaft. After prolonged use, it begins to work not quite properly, which provokes the occurrence of popping knocks and noises in the engine. In this case, you will have to go to a car service for troubleshooting.

The exhaust manifold is another weak point of the engine. It is often clogged, which leads to loss of power. And power is lost significantly, so it is recommended to periodically clean the manifold from dirt, fuel residue and carbon deposits. This will prevent breakdowns and problems.

Tuning

The power of these engines can be easily increased by installing the classic Stage 1 and Stage 2 firmware. This will not entail significant costs, but in total will significantly improve the performance and technical characteristics of the engine. With all operations it is possible to get about 60 additional horsepower.

In the end, BMW was able to do the impossible – to produce a powerful and economical diesel engine. B57D30 is characterized by reliability and ease of maintenance. This power unit can be serviced independently and at home, but for repair it is possible to contact specialists in service centers. With normal operation and the use of quality liquids for filling, as well as proper maintenance, the engine life can exceed 300 thousand kilometers.

This engine is installed on the following models:
