Gasoline engine with a displacement of 2996 cubic centimeters. Produced from 2004 to the middle of 2011. It has an in-line structure, injector feeding system. It is characterized by 6 cylinders made of a mixture of magnesium and aluminum. The diameter of each is 85 millimeters. The motor has 24 valves, 4 for each cylinder. The stroke of the piston is 88 millimeters. The compression ratio is 10.7 to 1.

Engine power ranges from 218 to 272 horsepower. Torque is from 300 to 315, depending on the modification of the motor. It is recommended to fill up with 95 gasoline. It meets Euro 5 environmental standards. The weight of the motor is about 160 kilograms. Average consumption in the city per 100 kilometers – 13.6 liters, on the highway – 6.6 liters, in mixed mode consumes 9.2 liters. Oil consumption up to a liter per 1000 kilometers. It is recommended to use either 5W-30 or 5W-40. The motor holds 6.5 liters of oil. It should be changed every 10,000 kilometers. The engine operates at an average temperature of 95 degrees Celsius. The motor resource is more than 300 thousand kilometers of mileage.

Advantages

This engine is characterized by lightweight cylinders, modernized crankshaft. The piston-rod group also has less weight compared to the predecessors of the engine. Modernization touched the gas distribution system, Double Vanos is used. In order to increase efficiency, a second version of Valvtronic is used. The height of the exhaust valves depends on the engine upgrade, from 0.18 millimeters to 9.9. The cylinder head uses a different cap and injector. The timing chain is used in the timing chain.

Disadvantages

The problems are typical for all predecessors of this motor. The only exceptions are the oil rings, the so-called “oil burn” has disappeared. For this reason, the life of the motor has increased in comparison with its predecessors. Not a bad engine for its money.

Modifications

N52B30U1 has been available since 2004 and has 218 horsepower. It was produced for BMW 25i or 28i. It differs by ECU firmware. The torque of the motor is 270 Nm.

The second modification of the motor is N52B30. Produced for cars on the territory of America. It has a power of 231 horsepower. It was mounted on the 28i version.

N52B30O0, characterized by a three-stage intake manifold. It has a higher output of 258 horsepower. Produced for 30i models. Torque is 300 Nm.

N52B30O1 is a modernized version of the previous engine. The power of the motor is 265 horsepower. It was installed on the 30i version, has a torque of 315 Nm. There is also a version for crossovers with the index X, characterized by a power of 272 horsepower. Torque is 315 Nm.

Chip tuning

We recommend tuning the intentionally weakened 218 and 231 horsepower versions. A DISA three-stage intake manifold is required to restore factory power. It will also require ECU firmware. Combined, this will increase power to 272 horsepower. To achieve even more power you can install a sport exhaust system, so the power will be about 290 horsepower. Another option is to install a 6 throttle intake, but will require tuning on “custom brains”.

There is a possibility of installing a compressor, which will allow you to achieve a power of 350 horsepower, but it is easier to buy a variety of N54 with subsequent tuning chip to 400 horses.
