In recent years, car manufacturers have often experimented with body types. BMW are skillful masters in this business. The service list of the named brand is full of glorified models. BMW F36 Gran Coupe is a vivid example of this. Auto was presented in the first half of 2014. The Geneva Motor Show was chosen as the place of presentation. The car was produced for three years until March 2017. Then a restyling of the BMW F36 was developed, but it will be highlighted closer to the end of the review.

Engines

Each power unit is combined with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The existing motors will be listed below:

  • Inside the car 420i, as well as the variation BMW F36 420i xDrive is a gasoline engine with 184 “horses” and four cylinders. The working volume is 2.0 liters. Acceleration to 100 km / h with such a power unit is achieved in 7-8 seconds. Fuel consumption on average is in the range of 6-6.5 liters per 100 kilometers.
  • BMW F36 420d (xDrive) will please you with a diesel engine with a volume of 2.0 liters, which has a power of 190 hp. You will be able to accelerate to “hundred” in 7.5 seconds. In mixed cycle fuel consumption will be approximately 4-5 liters.
  • The 430i (xDrive) version offers owners an inline four-cylinder engine (2.0 liters) with 249 hp. Acceleration to 100 km/h is possible in just 5.9 seconds. A distinctive feature of the motor is considered an indicator of economy. For 100 kilometers traveled, an average of 5-6 liters of gasoline “goes away”.
  • The top modification 440i (xDrive) is equipped with a 6-cylinder turbo engine with a working volume of 3.0 liters. The power indicator is equal to 326 hp. With such an engine you can “shoot” to the mark of 100 km / h in 5 seconds. With such impressive characteristics, the motor has a very economical appetite. At an average cycle for 100 km it takes about 7 liters.

Interior

When examining the interior of the described car, it can be immediately noted that it is executed in the brand’s corporate style. The dashboard has a modern look and high functionality. It is easy to master, and all functions are clear at an intuitive level without the need for a long study – only useful information is in front of you. An important internal detail of every car is the steering wheel. In this case, it is three-spoke and multifunctional. There are paddles for shifting gears. The steering wheel comfortably “lies” in the hands.

The front panel is the same as in the 4 Series Coupe or 3 Series Sedan. With the center console turned toward the driver, you feel as if you are behind the “captain’s bridge”.

No problems with ergonomics. The high quality of applied materials is pleasing. If to briefly characterize the design of the internal component of the car, the word “austere” would fit perfectly.

The front seats guarantee a good level of comfort for driver and passenger. There is a developed lateral support, wide adjustment ranges and a volume of free space for the location of legs. However, numerous reviews say that the situation with the second row of seats is quite different. The passengers in the back will be comfortable only if their height is not higher than 175 cm.

It is worth noting a spacious trunk with a volume of 480 liters in the basic configuration. If you fold down the rear seats, then the figure rises to as much as 1,300 liters.

Electronics and security

Of the main “contrivances” of the BMW F36 can be highlighted:

  • Parking Assistant;
  • Driving Assistant, DCC;
  • BMW projection display with integrated video systems;
  • iDrive Touch controller;
  • Traffic information received online;
  • Remote control of the vehicle;
  • Active cruise control with available “Stop&Go” function;
  • A system for automatic high beam control;

Due to driver inattention or poorly lit terrain, it can sometimes be difficult to see the signs that set the applicable speed limits. The Driver Information System is designed for just this purpose. The Brake Energy Recovery System is responsible for returning part of the “force” expended back to the vehicle.

The technical characteristics of the BMW 4-series F36 can be called impressive. From the additional features not mentioned earlier, the adaptive suspension deserves attention. Scientifically, it is called a set of mechanisms, as well as a node that provides maximum comfort and safety not only for the driver, but also for passengers. This aspect is important, because it determines the stability of the car as a whole….

Options

The BMW 4 Grand Coupe model is offered to buyers in five different packages that share basic features but differ from each other:

  • 420i rear-wheel drive. 2.0 engine, 184 horsepower. 8-speed automatic transmission.
  • 420i xDrive – all-wheel drive. Powertrain 2.0 with 184 hp Identical automatic transmission.
  • 420d xDrive – all-wheel drive car with a 2.0 liter engine, 184 hp. Similar automatic transmission.
  • 430i xDrive – all-wheel drive with 8-speed automatic transmission. AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. Gasoline engine – 2.0 liter. Power 249 hp.
  • 440i xDrive – a car with all-wheel drive and a power unit, the working volume of which is 3.0 liters. Power – 326 hp. The same 8-speed automatic transmission.

The presented configurations have different body weights. For example, 2-4 variations show a mark of 1690 kg. Auto 420i weighs 1615 kg, and the top version weighs 1760 kg.

Appearance

The BMW 4 Grand Coupe is a five-door liftback with frameless side windows. The front features the signature “nostrils” of the false radiator grille, adaptive LED headlights (LED), bumper with integrated fog lights. The profile part demonstrates a long hood shape, M Performance sills, descending roof line, as well as quite smooth lines that pass into a “powerful” stern. All this combined with large wheel arches and 17-inch rims creates a sense of dynamism.

At the back, the car will please its owners with a massive bumper, L-shaped lights and a miniature trunk lid. Contactless opening and closing of the latter is also provided.

The ground clearance of the BMW 4 Series Grand Coupe is 130 mm.

Restyling

In 2017, the world was presented to the restyling of the BMW 4 Series ( F32, F33, F36 ), the release of which is actively supported in 2018. Some changes affecting the exterior of the auto are present. However, due to the fact that they are very minor, it is very difficult to notice them. You need to make a close inspection to find the differences. For example, it is a beautiful border at the front, which extends across the entire width of the car and unites the sections of air intakes. The same design boasts an insert on the rear bumper. Now the owners of the 4 Series Grand Coupe have a lot of opportunities for personalization. To a greater extent, this applies to decorative elements on the front and rear fairings. There are packages with black and chrome trim. The color palette has been supplemented with two new shades – blue and orange.

As for the interior, the main focus of the restyling was on the variety of materials used and giving the whole interior a truly exclusive look. There are now more upholstery variations due to three new types of leather. The colors of the so-called contrast stitching have been successfully selected. On the front panel there are more details with glossy black as well as chrome trim. The “rim” of the steering wheel is now more comfortable due to the improved shape and upholstery.

The electronics of the BMW 4 Grand Coupé are still of the highest quality. The dashboard with its useful and versatile functions is in front of the owner’s eyes. All data can be displayed in four modes: Comfort, Eco Pro, Sport and Sport+. The much-loved “Professional” navigation system, which displays all information on a large display, now has an updated user interface with icons in the form of “tiles”. You’ll enjoy voice control, state-of-the-art charging for your smartphone, and a WiFi hotspot that can connect up to ten devices at once. ConnectedDrive services are included as standard, giving you remote access to a variety of services.

The collection of powertrains with the arrival of restyling remained the same without any changes. The model is equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission called “Steptronic”. You can find only two variations of drives: full and rear. The creators have carried out serious work on the settings of the chassis of the car. The suspension has become much more rigid, which can be attributed to the pluses, because the overall stability of the car has increased, and during the passage of turns the probability of “rolls” of the body has decreased. As for the general level of comfort, the developers themselves stated that no special changes were made. And this is logical, given the outstanding performance in this regard in the “old” version of the model. To consider all the existing updates in more detail, it is worth watching a test drive video, on which everything will be clearly shown.
