BMW 5 Series G30

On 13.10.2016, the Bavarian manufacturer showed the world public BMW G30 5 series. The sedan externally began to resemble the “seven”. The difference in the exterior is minimal. However, the technical part in the G30, slightly increased in dimensions, has revolutionized the automotive world.

Replacing the BMW F10, the G30 has become more dynamic. The three-cylinder has innovative control systems, network integration and more driver assistance systems. The Fifth Series has always been a huge success among car enthusiasts. This can be judged by the number of units sold, almost 8 million. Therefore, no one doubts that the BMW 5 Series VII G30 G31 will enjoy similar success.

It has become a tradition of the last generations, when BMW concern produces cars in these bodies (G31 – station wagon) plus G38. This is also a sedan, but it is designed for the PRC market and has a longer (Long) wheelbase.

Appearance

The exterior of the 2017 BMW 5 G30 is sporty and powerful. The appearance of the sedan resembles an athlete dressed in an expensive civilized suit. The German designer managed to find the optimal combination of aggression with attractiveness. Therefore, the premium sedan BMW 5 G30 on the photo and in real life looks amazing.

The “nostrils” of the radiator grille are perfectly combined with slightly frowned head optics, slanted turn signal blocks with bumper plastics. The result is a dynamic silhouette of a sedan with optimally folded sidewalls. Note that the radiator grille can have four positions. If the car motor needs cooling, the “nostrils” open, otherwise – they are in the closed position. The stern also has an expressive design: low landing, L-shaped optics, different shape (depending on the modification of the car) exhaust pipes on the sides, wide lines. Buyers have an opportunity to make the exterior of their car individual, choosing one of 3 trim packages. These are Sport/Luxury Line plus sporty BMW G30 dodger.

At first, customers were offered a color palette of 13 colors. Almost all of them were metallic effect (including bluestone, mokka, imperial blue), and only two had a glossy hue. The BMW G30 black carbon fiber is a good choice. In 2017, 8 more variants were added, 6 in Individual, 2 in matte Frosted Individual.

The BMW G30 is optionally available with led adaptive headlights, which have a dazzle-free high beam and can illuminate up to 0.5 km. The vehicle can also be equipped with night vision optics.

The rims for the BMW 5 G30 are also available in a variety of options. Consumers can choose from 17 options! The BMW G30 has tire sizes ranging from 17-20 inches. Based on the modification, choices can be made. You can go for 18-inch alloys with the 632 style, but the best option for the BMW G30 is R19 rims.

The Germans also managed to reduce the aerodynamic drag figure from 0.29 (in the F10) to 0.22 Cx.

Dimensions of the 7th generation cars comply with the European norms. Length of the sedan is 4.936, width – 1.868, height – 1.466 meters, wheelbase of the car – 2.975. Compared to the F10, the BMW G30 has a slightly wider and longer body, but the mass has decreased by as much as a hundred kilograms. In its design, the share of aluminum has been increased. The hood with wings and doors are made of it, as well as in the predecessor. However, the designers decided to lighten the top of the 2018 BMW 5 G30. Therefore, light metal was used in the creation of the roof of the car with the trunk lid.

Interior

The interior of the BMW G30 is stunning. Yes, the front panel has a familiar architecture, inherent in all models of the Bavarian manufacturer. However, the design is elegant. The level of finishing is at the highest level, you can’t tamper with it. The interior of the BMW 5 G30 is finished in aluminum, high-quality leather/package alcantara, wood and other materials of appropriate quality.  The 3-spoke multi steering wheel has a developed relief, the instrument panel is informative. The center console on the torpedo is equipped with a 10.25-inch monitor (optional) of the “iDrive” system with touch function. Let’s add here perfectly placed blocks of sound system with diamond high-frequency speakers Bowers & Wilkins (to make you understand what it is, let’s say that its cost is equal to the price of harman kardon with installation) and climate control. There is also a standard aromatizer with air ionization. In other words, the buyer gets an excellent decoration of the G30 BMW panel.

But it’s not the end of the line either. The interior is equipped with Ambient light, so it is comfortable in the evening/night. Gesture control and voice commands are allowed. There is wireless charging for mobile devices. The “Concierge” function allows you to get the information you need. Option – availability of key and installation of NBT system on BMW G30.

The first-row seats with massage function are as comfortable as possible. The profile is good, the sides are developed, the stiffness of padding is at the necessary level, and the range of various electric adjustments is wide (touch sensors are used). The 2nd row sofa can safely accommodate 3 adult passengers, but the floor tunnel is protruding, so the middle one will be a bit uncomfortable.

The noise insulation of the interior is excellent. It is quiet inside the car. The sound of the engine running does not penetrate inside.

The trunk of the BMW G30 is roomy, even in standard form. The volume is 530 liters. But the configuration of the luggage compartment is not ideal. The backrest of the sofa is folded, which increases the space for luggage, but a completely flat floor is not obtained. Necessary tools and repair kit are placed under the floor.

Electronics and security

According to owner reviews, the BMW G30 has a strong safety system. The large list of basic/optional equipment includes systems:

Technical specifications

First, about the powertrains.

The basic configuration is 520i. The engine has 4 cylinders, two-liter displacement, 184 hp. More powerful gasoline engines in the BMW G30 are installed in the 530i/530i xDrive models. Volume 2.0, 2nd supercharging, direct injection, Valvetronic system, power – 252 “horses”. Therefore, the spurt to “hundred” lasts 6.2 sec., the maximum speed is 250 km/h, and fuel consumption in the combined cycle reaches 6.4 liters /100 km.

The 540i/540i xDrive models are equipped with three-liter six-cylinder units with turbocharger, direct gasoline injection and Valvetronic system. Thanks to the power of 340 “horses” engine accelerates the sedan to “hundredth” in 5.1 sec. The speed limit is 250 km/h. Fuel “appetite” varies in the range of 6.5-7.4 liters.

The most powerful motor, V8, will be equipped with all-wheel drive modification M550i. Volume 4.4 liters, power 462 hp. This is a BMW G30 with the m sport package.

Now let’s break down the technical specifications of BMW G30 diesel engines. The 520d/520d xDrive modifications are equipped with two-liter four-cylinder B47 four-cylinder units with Common Rail. There is turbocharging, there is a 16-valve timing gearbox plus direct injection and. Power output is 190 horsepower. Therefore, the starting acceleration with the top speed is worse than gasoline motors: 7.7 seconds, 238 km/h. However, fuel consumption is lower, 4.1 liters on the highway and 4.9 – in the city.

Stronger motors on the 530d /530d xDrive models. There are already 3 liters, 6 cylinders, 2-flow turbocharger, 24 valves and the same Common Rail with direct injection. As a result, the BMW 5 G30 has 265 “horses” and more weighty characteristics of acceleration (5.7 sec.) and top speed (250 km/h). Fuel consumption per 100 km is slightly more, 4.5-5.4 liters.

Except for the 520d model, equipped with a 6-speed manual, all other cars are equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission ZF. Drive can be rear or all-wheel drive.

Other characteristics

Let’s take a look at other features of the BMW 5 G30 as well.

All of the sedan’s chassis is equipped with ventilated disc units and a variety of useful electronics are involved. On BMW G30 suspension in front is double wishbone and independent. At the back is the original five-lever with two separate links. If desired, the buyer can carry out retrofitting of the BMW G30.  Dynamic Drive stabilizers and shock absorbers (they are adaptive and controlled electronically) are purchased separately. It is possible to install the Integral Active Steering system on the sedan, which will help the driver by steering the rear chassis of the car.

Equipment

Even in the basic configuration BMW G30 has a lot of frontal / side airbags, “climate” on 2 zones, multimedia with 8.8-inch monitor, good standard navigation, beautiful interior trim, heated seats of the 1st row / steering wheel, LED optics, parking sensors in front / rear, ABS and ESP systems, as well as a bunch of other “tricks”.

“The “trick” is an application for mobile devices. With its help, the car owner can monitor the BMW online. The basic equipment includes:

• 8-speed automatic;
• Airbag;
• LED lights;
• Heated/electrically adjustable mirrors;
• R17 light alloy wheels;
• Climate control for 2 zones;
• BMW Teleservices;
• Dynamic cruise control;
• Multimedia complex with 6 speakers;
• Heated steering wheel/front seats, keyless engine start and Stop-Start.

On expensive modifications climate control becomes 4-zone, electric seat adjustments are expanded and there is a memory function, multimedia from Bowers Wilkins with 16 speakers and a screen of 10.25 inches is installed. Tablets are integrated into the headrests of the front seats, the sport suspension/braking system becomes adaptive. Finally, if a frontal collision is threatened, Intelligent Deceleration is activated. The options are numerous.

You can get the M Performance package for the BMW 5 G30 to improve the dynamic performance of the sedan and emphasize the sporty character of the car. For example, if you prefer shadow line to chrome, you can install black grilles.

Which model should I choose? It all depends on the needs of the buyer.

If you want to have a good motor, buy the 530i modification. The sedan is equipped with a B-series engine, which is more reliable than the N20. Prefer a dynamic ride? Then take 540i. Moderate fuel consumption and the possibility of improving the performance of the car after tuning BMW 5 G30.

However, in terms of driving dynamics, the M550i is the best, but the quality and reliability of its motor is inferior to the engine installed in the 540 version.

A good unit is also on the diesel version of the 520d. You can take a sedan with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, xDrive. Dynamics are not bad and fuel consumption is quite economical. Even better indicators 530d. It is equipped with a B57 engine, which is 12% more fuel-efficient than the N57 and weighs much less.

At the end a couple of words about the restyling of the BMW G30. It is expected in early/mid 2020. The car turned out to be extremely successful, so the manufacturer does not see the need to update it before that date.
